can we bring food like meggi, serunding bla2 to UK?how much maximum luggage can we bring?30kg and if it exceed how much they'll charged u?
*
as long as its "dry" food you should be alright, but i would advice you not to bring too much.

i dont know what your baggage allowance is, the normal busines class allowance is 30kg and economy class 20kg.

if you do not exceed 5 kg more than your allowance, you should be ok.

good luck.

ok i have a bit of english money on me and i have a UK bank account. im currently in malaysia but returning to england soon.

does that mean i cannot go to an hsbc branch here in KL and deposit my money to go into my UK hsbc account (without any charge hopefully)?
*
i dont know. the only way for u to deposit money into ur UK account from msia is via telegraphic transfer (TT). chances are HSBC bank in msia wont even have a record of ur UK HSBC account. but u better check this to be sure. and do post here what u find.

basically u cant bring raw food of any kind except stuff that u bought at the airport into the UK. especially not serunding, coz it's got beef in it. strictly no meat or fish of any kind, not even dried ones. that's what the immigration says. if u're moving to the UK to study for the 1st time, u could always send a box of stuff to urself. last time i sent a box with 20kg of food stuff, inks, extra clothes and stuff via fedex. the customs called me to confirm the status of the parcel and was about to charge import tax on the stuff. but then i told them i'm a student and those are my personal stuff. then i faxed them a letter that proves that i'm a student, and they released the parcel after that.

Added on September 17, 2007, 1:36 ambaggage allowance varies according to flight service. look on ur ticket. mas usually set the limit at 20kg for economy. the 5-7kg extra is up to the officer's discretion. to make sure u could secure the extra 5kg, u can do two things:

i. book weekday flight during the day. these flights are less preferred by students bcoz their parents/family couldnt take the day off to send them off. the favourite is weekend nights. the more people taking the flight, the less chances of them giving u the extra baggage weight.

ii. check-in early. each flight has a specific allocation and leeway. if u check in early, u can take the allocation for urself. and chances are the officers incharge are more likely to entertain ur needs.

Nah, going to UWE, Bristol.

I managed to smuggle in 5 packets of maggi (5*5) and 4 cartons of ciggarettes. No problems there, was travelling with my dad. We got this cool fastrack thing, but the immigration lady asked me to bring my xray to the medical side, and then i had to queue for the immigration officer again! so my advice is, if you have an xray, go straight to the small, ugly medical room, get them to stamp it, and then only queue at counter 6. (i think)

oh and i like starbucks here, it only costs like 1.5 pounds.

i just arrived newcastle in UK. In my case, we whole group ( 4 ppl) which consist 3 students and 1 traveller, they allow us to bring 120kg, mean 30kg each, but we have to give kopi-o for the custom ppl about rm100. So i think is reasonable if you lucky enough.

When i arrive Newcastle, i plan to declared my food and some stationary cause inside got many can food la, chinese herb and so on. But the officer in Newcastle just ask us to go straight to the entrance without checking. So i think if you arrive in small airport, it is more easy for you to enter the Great UK.!! drool.gif

Now the problem i get is the private accommodation is so far from Newcastle University. I don understand how those student from Malaysia ( my senior ) called it is near. 40 minutes walk to school. sweat.gif i guess i have to get used to it d..

ps: Anyway, travel with Emirates is good la, if you need wait more than 4 hours in Dubai, you can ask for free meal in a shop called don know what name in the airport.

like what i say, it really depend your luck. For my experience travel with Emirates, they allow me to bring 1 hang luggage(7kg), 1 handbeg and 1 laptop beg. I know the rule stated is 1 hand luggage per person but in my group, all ppl carried 3 hand luggage. Not only us, i see plenty of students also carried quite a no of beg with them. drool.gif

despite having HSBC both in malaysia and UK, they're separate entities. meaning, it's just two totally separate banks, only they just so happened to share the same name. so money transfer facility u can use is normal TT, which takes about 3 days.

but the fastest way for money transfers from malaysia is via maybank. my wife uses her maybank card to withdraw money from ATMs in the UK, directly from her account in malaysia. they charge RM12 per transfer, regardless of the amount.

it's pretty much instantaneous, so ur parents or whomever could just bank in the money into ur maybank account, and u can take the money out in the UK almost immediately.

u gotta enable ur bankcard for use overseas before hand. so u got 3 days...
*
Ok then, but all Maybank cards do hv the bankcard logo now rite..

QUOTE(youngkies @ Sep 17 2007, 01:06 AM)

ya you will need a bank account to get a contract phone. where you'll need a bank letter from the university before you can opened a bank account.

be patient, do it step by step. in meantime when you are free, go do those easy stuff first, register gp etc.
oo alright, uni of glamorgan is in cardiff. enjoy cardiff, it is a good nice lively friendly yet affordable city to live in.

you will need a bank letter from the uni to open a bank current account.

as for sim card, you do not need a bank account for prepaid (so called pay as you go / talk in UK) sim card. but you will need at least a debit card to get a phone with subscription / contract.

as for money transfer, let say Telegraphic transfer, it would usually took about 3 days esp. on weekend. but sometime you might get it as soon after a day, due to time difference between malaysia and UK, it is difficult to get it immediately paying-in in malaysia.

3 days.. hmm.gif thanks 4the info

i noe that there's 30kg limit for the check-in baggage(for MAS),i'll transit at Amsterdam..but then i'll transfer to a local connecting flight (KLM)..international=30kg, local flight=usually 20kg rite? wink.gif do they charge for the extra weight?becoz i comply to the previous 30kg"max" MAS flight,hv anyone ever encounter this b4?

well, u still have to enable the card for use overseas. if not, the bank will flag any overseas use as illegal access and will block ur card. to unblock, u'd probably have to come back to msia and provide security clearance to prove it is actually YOU who used the card overseas wink.gif. i'm using CIMB, and although it has a bankcard logo as well, CIMB does not provide international ATM facilities at the moment. so maybank bankcard is the only way to go... for now. wink.gif

they will only check the weight the 1st time u come in. after that, u dont have to do anything, they'll take care of EVERYTHING. just make sure ur important items that u need to use immediately (immigration stuff, registration etc) are in ur handluggage, not in the checked in baggage. just in case it gets delayed or something.

and how is amsterdam-UK local flight? tongue.gif it's international laa friend.

the 1-hand-luggage rule only applies if you're flying out of heathrow. no other airport inthis world has this rubbish rule except them. its apparently a security measure since the london bombing.

even BA protested the ruling because there's it only adds to the amount of luggage being processed by the checked-in baggage machine which slows down baggage processing.

yes, possible.. But if you didn't exceed your quota.

For those who going fly from KLIA to UK, please make sure you don't bring any water or liquid.. Although you bring a bottle of water before you boarding, they will ask you to finish it before boarding..This is what happen to me when i flied last month by MAS.
For check-in luggage, normally is 20kg (for MAS) but if you taking student ticket, should be more. But for those normal ticket, 20kg, you will have extra quota which is 5kg. They will give you check in the maximum 25kg when you exceed. But you have like 30kg+-, you can try check-in as earlier as possible like 3/4 hours earlier before boarding. Another important thing is, find those friendly officer. Try to smile at them, talk friendly and make some nice joke with them. then if they are happy, probably they will you go through. haha.. this is what we usually do... tongue.gif

For hand-carry luggage, they seldom will weight it. But try to use smaller bag, they'll think it doesn't more than 10kg. And remember don't put any smelly stuff or food. otherwise you will quite susah with it.

Another thing, if you are bringing any smelly or 'illegal' food into your check-in luggage, remember you used some thing like clothes cover on top and put in plastic bag as many as possible, so that no any smell... coz when the big black dog (at the heathrow custom) smell something from outside your luggage, you will in deep trouble... Last time, my friend's food was rampas by the custom...

Good luck on those who going to fly to UK.... smile.gif
