Hello people. I need recommendations for HDD, SSD and a PSU. Doing a major overhaul and pretty Much thrown out my crappy old components. I already have the following specs

Intel Core i7-4770K
Asrock Z87 Fatal1ty Professional
Corsair Vengeance 1866MHz CL9 16GB
Powercolor R9 290X OC Edition
NZXT Switch 810 Ultra Tower
Lite On Blu Ray Burner.
Creative X-Fi Titanium Professional

So what brands or models would you recommend for a fast yet decent in value SSD, a long lasting HDD, and a PSU that can handle 290X crossfire in the future? Budget is around RM1.8K or lesser if possible.

And any liquid cooling enthusiasts here? The liquid cooling club thread seems to be non responsive, so just wanna ask, is it better to spend a bit more for full WC like a XSPC D5 Photon AX360mm kit, or should I just get a NZXT Kraken X60 for CPU and Kraken X40/G10 for GPU, or is there anyone here who can recommend a list of components for a single loop GPU/CPU wc setup.

Thanks. =)
*
Again, mind clarify on what you want to overhaul?

HDD, SSD and PSU?

SSD - Samsung, Plextor or Intel should be fine

HDD - normal WD blue not long lasting enough for you?

PSU - Proper 750W 80+ gold should be ok, but to be safe, try get minimumly 850W 80+ gold. CM V series got it, but i think local distributor didn't bring the 850W model. Then get the 1000W model should also be fine, not too much pricier also (Viewnet selling it at RM650, and you can probably ask for some more discount if paying by cash).

For liquid cooler, I no idea bout it. But recently, I saw some article comment bout the inadequate design of Kraken G10, cause the VRM is not cooled, hence resulting exceptionally high temperature on VRM...

Sorry my bad. I'm overhauling my entire system, and I'm pretty much 80% done except for the SSD, HDD and PSU. So yeah, just the three components.

As for SSD, I guess the Samsung 840 Evo 250GB should be fine then, since it's also cheaper than equivalent plextors or intel ones.

For HDD, I'm not sure as seagate has some pretty food stuff as well. I'm just looking at something that can run a long time unlike my older WDs which decided to die off after 3 years.

For PSU, hmmm, I've read that CM V models are basically rebadged of Seasonics. Will take a look at the V1000 model.

The G10 does have issue with VRM cooling, but some sticky thermal tape and chipset heatsinks is all that is needed to bring down VRM temps to around 50°+

No worries. No rush anyways. Wanna carefully look around at components before I commit, especially WCing. And seriously, thanks for the feedback. =)
*
HDD is all about luck, if you lucky, you get one that virtually can last forever, if you bad luck, RMA is like your daily routine... Even you turn seagate, it also won't guarantee that it won't fail in 3 years time.

Yeah, the V1000 is pretty cheap at Viewnet, RM649. Probably can ask for more discount if pay by cash.

But seriously, if it don't include bf4. Might as well stick with GTX650TI Boost, or bump up another bit and get a reference GTX760.

Ok, let me ask him back. Btw what's the diff between TI Boost and TI?

I'm thinking of getting this spec as suggest by sifus here

CPU: Intel Core I5 4440
MOBO: Asrock B85M Pro4
RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz
HDD: WD 1TB Caviar Blue HDD
Chasis: CM K350
PSU: FSP HEXA 500W PSU
GPU: Sapphire R9 270 2GB DDR5

Don't want to top up more as already over my initial budget RM2k  tongue.gif
A bit2 is OK  nod.gif
*
Basically it is the 128bits vs 192bits, which translate into quite a lot of different in terms of the performance. Also, the card is marginally newer and support SLI (may not be useful for most ppl).
user posted image

The built is ok, just that may be next time when ram price dropped, you can top up and get another 4gb ram. 8GB is like the average standard of RAM nowadays...

how about the price diff? slightly diff or need to top up more?
*
Price varies between the TI, TI Boost, non TI, 1gb and 2gb.

As suggested before, the best is the 650Ti boost 2GB. Cheapest one is by leadtek at RM540.

The 1GB version is priced at RM500 IINM.

Thanks for infor on RAM! previous quote was cheaper for same item... but now also change a bit..

if say i buy GPU and CPU outside (e.g. second hand) and have a particular shop to set up everything else, would that be acceptable?
yeah thanks! I am planning on getting the GTX650Ti 2gb ddr5. I'm only opting for aerocool because its the cheapest i could find (or are there cheaper options?) any other high quality stuff i cant afford already. better spend more on parts that matter right?
Thanks for info. A Xeon processor? forgive my noob-ness, but i guess a xeon cpu is better than i5 4670 isit? dunno la about the price, i ask kedai, kedai give me that.. if not, then how much should it actually cost?

i saw a gtx650ti boost 2gb ddr5 from Winfast. Reliable? relatively cheap too if compare with asus. i rlly dunno which gtx650ti should i get.

thanks a lot for the link! definitely will utilize that discount coupon! but when u say entitled, does it mean i have to be a member or sth then only i can get the discount?
*
Xeon > i5 4670, and is on par with i7.

I checked the price for 4670 (non k), only RM670+ at viewnet.

Regarding GTX650 TI Boost, I believe Leadtek should be among the cheapest one already.

Because the coupon is from EPP, so I not too sure if non-EPP can utilise it. But again, I don't see any harm in trying it.

when talk about 'value' RAM, what does it actually mean ya?

*
Value RAM are those typical green color ram you saw out there. They are not designed to be overclocked.

Gaming wise, they can do just as good as those fancy performance RAM does.

I think I can save up to rm100 if I assemble the rig myself, but I scare something go wrong.
Do we need like special tool to build rig? I, myself come from IT background (CS Student) and build my own rig.
More satisfied  rclxms.gif

Any sifus here can help me in building one?  icon_question.gif
*
Apart from electrostatic need extra care, I don't see much chances to spoil something in the assembling process.
1. Rdy all the parts and tools (screw drivers and so on)
2. Install the CPU (heatsink) and RAM onto mobo
3. Screw the mobo
4. Screw the PSU
5. Screw (some case no need) the HDD
6. Install the GPU
7. Connect the connectors from PSU to respective parts (note that some connector may be too hard to push in, be extra care on those)
8. Connect SATA from HDD to MOBO
9. Connect those connectors from your chassis onto the mobo

Start booting up the PC and see if everything is working. nod.gif

I don't think there are that huge single unit PSU out there... blink.gif

The power source from our wall socket are designed for under 1.5kW only IINM.

Yup, and I do it exactly like I stated.

Except for the electrostatic charge and heatsink/thermal compund applying, no parts require particularly skills.

both apu and intel i3/i5/i7's HD integrated gpu uses ram as its vram, so, the same concept applies? exclude the Iris Pro Graphics 5200 series though.

UPDATE: http://www.madshrimps.be/articles/article/...8#axzz2pWk5vvZ5

??

That article explain about the memory speed support of Haswell over Ivy-bridge, didn't mention bout use of RAM as VRAM?

EDITED: I saw it here. But again the different is minimal. But it isn't really relevant, since 99.99% of those that can afford pricier RAM can afford a dedicated video card... sweat.gif

sorry, pasted the wrong link  sweat.gif

I didn't said that the difference will be very big though.  Getting a dedicated gpu would indeed be the better choice for the price point but I'm just explaining some of the use cases of the usage of ram per se.

DDR4 and the newer Haswell-E are gonna cost a bomb, especially here. And likewise, buy now, and save up for a new system in 2-3 years time.  thumbup.gif
*
Since DDR3 isn't exactly cheap to begin with now, I don't see DDR4 will be much harder to swallow at.

Last time, when DDR3 is just coming out, DDR2 is already dirt cheap.

Its all because of my new hobby: virtualization. virtualization needs compatible proc + compatible mobo + lots of ram + fast and large storage(but no budget for ssd coz too costly  sweat.gif )
but anyway, gonna to get myself the rig within this year because waiting for ddr4's price to drop would take too much of a time
*
Even waiting DDR3 price to drop will take a long time... sweat.gif

So why don't we wait and see how much can DDR4 offer.

Go taobao search for front USB3.0 panel to be inserts on either 5.25" CD ROM drive or 3.5" diskette drive.

i seeee, never knew can do like that. thanks for suggestion!

Guys, let say for now, i just go with the 1TB WD caviar and install my OS inside it first.

later if i decide to change to SSD, can I move the OS into the SSD for faster boot up?

I'm so pressured by OS price lar.. RM300++  shocking.gif if i 'umm ummm' later only settle for 'okay' one can ah?

anyway, after much help from all the sifus here, just want to share my final rig:

CPU: Intel Core I5 4670                                  RM715
MOBO: ASrock B85M-HDS                                RM245
RAM: GSKill AEGIS 1x8GB DDR3 1600mhz      RM 265
HDD: WD 1TB Caviar Blue HDD                       RM195
Chasis: Coolermaster N300 KWN2                  RM149
PSU: FSP HEXA 500W PSU                                RM149
GPU: Winfast LT-GTX650Ti Boost 2GB DDR5   RM539
Wifi:Tplink TL-WN881ND                                 RM60
ODD: Liteon 24x Sata DVDRW                          RM60
LED: Dell S2340L                                              RM530
TOTAL:                                                              RM2892

*i know price all got somewhere cheaper for some above, but i think they minimal so doesnt affect my budget much. Plus, this one all quote from idealtech. so id prefer just go with their pricing.

and there u have it. below RM3k already, which is my budget. OS dunno lah how.. sigh
*
Do you really think you gonna need a i5 4670 at RM715? shocking.gif

Seriously, just top up another RM60+ and you can get a Xeon already... rolleyes.gif

Also as for mobo, A85M Pro4 is having a lead over B85M-HDS in many ways (not vital but also not bad if have it). For RM40 more, I will just top up to it.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/B85M%20Pro4/
http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/B85M-HDS/

Again, mind tell us why you still stick with the pricy RAM?

Also, I forget what are your main purpose for the rig already. Purely gaming or some computing also?

If purely gaming, cut down the budget for CPU and opt for a R9 270 may be a wiser choice.

Sounds ok, but if you not limited to the green camp, there are R9 290x and 290 reference in your price range too.
