U Mobile, Maxis share networkKUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile users will now enjoy the same surfing privileges as those of Maxis subscribers, following a collaboration between the two telco providers.
This is the result of the activation of their 3G RADIO Access Networks (RAN) sharing, so that the former can expand its 3G services to every state in the peninsular.
In the past only densely populated areas such as the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak and Johor had access to the high-speed Internet service.
"This arrangement allows us to make RM2bil in savings over the next 10 years, and it's good to keep the money within our country," U Mobile Sdn Bhd's major shareholder Tan Sri Vincent Tan said on Thursday.
U Mobile savings in operating and capital expenditures will be directly beneficial to customers, who will enjoy a variety of flexible plans such as RM18 per month for 250MB of data, 25 minutes of free calls to all networks, 25 free SMS to all networks.
In the outskirts where 3G services are not available, customers maintain use of the 2G domestic roaming partnership with Maxis.
The RAN sharing partnership was a response to the government's call for telcos to reduce duplication of network assets so that providers compete at the service level rather than infrastructure.
