can you please suggest another laptop please, as per my description below, tq:

1. Preferred Brand: Any brand with good warranty service (want to extend to 3 years)

2. Budget: RM 3,500 - RM 4000

3. Usage: Portable, durable, High Resolution, have SSD.

4. Preferred laptop/screen size: any size as long as portable

5. Usage: University assignment works, watching movies, and browsing web.
*
Samsung
Series 7 Ultra, i5-3337U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM2999[JBL][1.46kg], 4GB, W8

ASUS
UX31A-R4005H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM3599[1.3kg], 4GB, W8

Lenovo
IdeaPad Yoga 13, i5-3337U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3399, 4GB, 2 years; colors: grey/orange

if you are living at johor, then i would suggest you to take the ASUS. comes standard with 2 years warranty, extend it to 3 years will cost around RM400.

the Yoga 13 screen reso is 1600x900, hope you dont mind about it. sweat.gif

Thanks for the advice @nexus2238!

If that's the case, please disregard the weight and durability as a priority. With the same preference & budget:

1. Brand : No preference on brands but would like one that has good after sales/ warranty services
2. Price: RM 2000-3000 (Willing to stretch the budget if the specs is worth it)
3. Size: 14'-16', HD screen resolutions would be a plus
4. Usage according to priority: Microsoft office programs & occasionally AutoCad, Gaming [ Dota2, Starcraft 2 ], Watching videos

What would the recommendations be? Thank you
*
Dell
Inspiron 14R, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) @RM2499[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), Ubuntu 12.04 , 6 cell; W8SL@RM2699
Inspiron 15R, i7-4500U + AMD HD8850M (GDDR5) @RM2499[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), Linux, 65WHr; W8SL@RM2699
Inspiron 15 7000, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) + (1920x1080; Touch)@RM3599[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr

MSI
GE60-2OC, i5-4200M + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM3099,8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8, steel series KB
GE60-2OC, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM3599,8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8, steel series KB

ASUS
S551LB-CJ075H, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT740M + 24GB mSATA + 1TB + (1366x768;touch)@RM3399[2.4kg], 8GB, W8, 3-cell

if you stay at Johor, you can get the ASUS as ASUS warranty support is better at Johor.
if you want premium feel, you can get the Dell Inspiron 15 7000. might need to stretch our your budget but the price is worth it.
for the MSI, if you want more work powerhouse, extend your budget a little and get the i7 version of GE60.
if you overall, go for the Inspiron 14R/15R by all means and extend the warranty with remaining budget. icon_rolleyes.gif

Sifu's ...
i'm going to buy a new laptop .. mainly for gaming, need to be able to handle long hours of gaming ie. 6hours n above.
budget rm4k-5k. ( might stretch above 5k if i feel worth it)

current models i'm looking at ie highlighted to me:-

1. Lenovo Y510p dual GPU RM4299
2. Illigear RS-15 lite RM4999 n above due to customization.

seems to me .. y510p wins out on dual gpu performance?
illigear as all round hdd, sdd performance?
correct me if i am wrong sifu's ? ... which one will u choose? ... or any suggestions for a 3rd or 4th option?

thanks in advance everyone. biggrin.gif
*
i will pick the RS-15 (non Lite). you get i7 and HD8970M as standard. just a bad side that you may use up to RM6000. sweat.gif

but assuming when you said can extend budget more than 5k because felt its worth it, it may not be a problem. if it is, you can stick back to the Lite version, then upgrade the graphics card in the future when you want to crave for more performance. however, i cant guarantee the GC is upgradeable if there is a change in the MXM module. sweat.gif

any other opinions? ...

what about RE-15? its within your budget and it offers good specs, i7 and GTX765M.

Thanks for that recommendation, I haven't looked closely at the Vostro line.

How easy is it to change the HDD to SDD, and does that void the warranty?
*
very easy. just remove the back cover, located HDD, unmount the HDD from the SATA port and install your SSD. then, you are good to go. smile.gif

whenever people said that dismantling the laptop can void warranty, just ignore them. as long the warranty sticker didnt get in your way, you are good to go.

for reinstalling, use cloning method. in malaysia, Dell is kinda cheapskate for not providing the installation disc. shakehead.gif

Ok, thanks for the info.  I'm still having mixed feelings about Dell, but the price is right. I'll have to give it some more thought.  Prioritizing pre-installed SSD, I'm seeing:

HP ENVY TouchSmart 14-k029TX Sleekbook:  RM3199.
Intel® Core™ i7-4500U-1.8GHz, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 128GB SSD, NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 740M, 14.0-inch 1366 x 768 Touchscreen, 2.0kg

Any feedback on that model, especially regarding build quality?
*
this laptop's build quality is above average. aluminium palm rest is nice and with SSD, dont have to worry that the palm rest area will turn warm after long usage.

but may i know where did you found this spec? because the pricing seems like too good to be true. hmm.gif

Not every manufacture allow you do so , if its MSI 's laptop , you have to beware warranty void if u intend to change hdd to ssd  laugh.gif

thats why i said as long as the warranty sticker didnt get in your way.

for MSI's case, you just need a sharp knife and you are good to go. not very hard but extra caution need to be given.

Thanks sifu, then if forget about weight, which 1 among these is better?

Macbook if have graphic card most likely to be very expensive right?

I'm not really heavy gamer, but play games like ragnarok, dota2, guildwars 2, tera online and some random online game during free time
*
for Macbook, if you dont play very heavy games, you can take this :

Apple MacBookPro 15" (Retina Display), i7-4750HQ + Intel Iris Pro 5200 + 256GB SSD + (2880x1800)@RM6499[2.02kg], 8GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX

performance is the same as a GT650M but the pricing is sweat.gif if you forget about the weight, then Lenovo Y510P or ASUS S551 is your choice.

Hello Sifus,

I would like to hear your advice on what kind of laptop i can get for the preference below.

1. Preferred Brand - Any
2. Budget - RM1.5K - 2.5K
3. Usage - Word Editing, Watching Movies and Listening to Songs.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - No preference

I would like to put weight into consideration as it would be better if it were light and I am not sure if i can get any Full HD laptop with this price range.

Thanks!
*
with your budget, getting a Full HD screen is impossible. if weight is your consideration, you can look at these :

Acer V5-473PG-54204G50, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M +(1366x768;touch)@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB,W8 *no OD

Dell Vostro 5470, i3-4010U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell

Lenovo
Ideapad Flex 14, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT720M +(1366x768; touch) + 8GB SSHD + 500GB HDD@RM2299, 4GB, W8, 2 yrs
S410p, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT720M@RM2099[1.8kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, 2 yrs

the laptop that is nearest and fulfill your needs :

Samsung Series 7 Ultra, i5-3337U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM2999[JBL][1.46kg], 4GB, W8

Yeah, the price is really a BOOM to me ..
Maybe I will just get a price range like 2.5k-3k++ to use 1st as I just graduate..
upgrade when I got stable income..

Do you know ASUS S551 pricing? is it cheaper with no touchscreen?

any other model you recommend? for my range and option  hmm.gif

THANKS ALOT!
*
yes it is cheaper.

ASUS S551LB-CJ120H, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2699[2.4kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8, 3-cell

or this

Dell Inspiron 15R, i7-4500U + AMD HD8850M (GDDR5) @RM2499[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), Linux, 65WHr; W8SL@RM2699

and yes, the S551 comes with built-in battery. normally Li-Ion batteries wont die so easily, however if they are exposed to heat, they will die easier (main enemy : heat). when replacing the battery, the back cover will be removed, unscrew the mountings and then disconnect the power cable. difficulty level is medium but important, must maximize safety precautions.

that is optional. with SLI model, it priced at RM3999.
for graphics rendering, it depends on the program you used. it is safe if you take quad core i7 and a decent graphics card (GT740M at least).

believe me or not, SLI really dont help much. if your rendering software doesnt support SLI, then you are doomed.
