Thanks for the lead. Should I look for these models in lowyat or thru online?
*
i would recommend you to touch and molest the laptops 1st, then if you got better price on the spot, you can purchase it. experiencing an item is always the right and best way buying something that is costy.

for the dell, i would recommend hands on the laptop at lowyat 1st, then buy online. try negotiate for more online with their sales representative/agent. icon_rolleyes.gif

1. None, but prefer with International warranty
2. <RM4k
3. Mainly for setting up test environments with VMs, so prefer with at least 16GB RAM, and plenty of harddisk to store the VMs.
4. 15.6" or smaller, but prefer anti-glare (matte) and weight < 2.8kg, as will travel with it. No touch screen pls.

Thank you.

Thanks.  How about Y410P and GP60?  Any good?
*
Y410P = Y510P, only difference is the screen resolution size (HD for Y410P, Full HD for Y510P).

for the GP60, if you are not gaming, then it is enough. you can use the extra budget to upgrade to SSD also. smile.gif
EDIT : or save up in your piggy bank for you future.

Thank you. Not really a hardcore gamer. Maybe just some small game over weekend like counter strike or Starcraft wink.gif is it major different between that GT750 vs GT740?

Y410 lighter correct?
*
it is a major difference but really depend on the game titles you are going to play. if you are playing games like Crysis 3, Battlefield 3/4, Metro and heavy games etc, you might better off with GT750M.

not really recommended to go with GT750M if you are playing CS:GO, WoW, Starcraft 2 and MMORPGs.

EDIT : yes, the Y410P is lighter but you lack of a full HD 15.6 screen and integrated numpad.

QUOTE(Fantasia @ Oct 26 2013, 08:50 AM)
guys, I need some recommendations from u all as i am quite behind as i didnt follow notebook news for few years. my sister need to get a notebook because her current 1 just kaput. since she is in australia, she doesnt know much about computer and i dont know what is the notebook industry there,i will get the advice from u here and tell her the model so that she can get it in australia.

1. Preferred Brand : anything that is reliable with good support (both hardware and software)
2. Budget : around RM 3000
3. Usage : normal web browsing, assignment, watch movie
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : 13" - 14" (dont want too small coz i dont want her to stress her eyes too much and dont want too big coz i scare it will be too heavy for her so i believe 13" to 14" is fine)
5. Battery life : reasonable (at least 2-3 hours)

thank you so much =)
*
go for these :

Dell
Inspiron 14 7000, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400 + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2699[2.02kg], 6GB(soldered) , W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr, No ODD
Vostro 5470, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2249, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell

Lenovo
S410p, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT720M@RM2099[1.8kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, 2 yrs

Acer
V5-473PG-54204G50, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M +(1366x768;touch)@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB,W8 *no OD

for the best choice, i would recommend the Inspiron 14 7000, one of Dell's new premium laptop compared to the old inspiron.
with the remaining budget, extend the warranty to 3 years for peace of sake. icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(Fantasia @ Oct 26 2013, 10:17 AM)
thanks for ur recommendations =) regarding inspiron 14 (the 1 kaput 1 is 14r XD)... it is good because it fits quite well to her requirements until i see "No ODD"... how about those with ODD, not within my budget? i dont mind to increase my budget to another 200-300 if there are... btw, since my sister still have another year in Oz, and she will be coming back next january, should i get the computer now in Oz, malaysia or buy it only when she is back in january? actually i am concern about the warranty support, like i mentioned earlier, she doesnt know much about computer.
*
the model i recommended is 14 7000, a newer model of the Inspiron family. comes with whole aluminium body and feel is very premium.

those with ODD, are within your budget and will be cheaper but the build quality feel may not as good as the 14 7000. if she uses the ODD a lot, i would recommend you to take back the 14R or 14 :

Dell
Inspiron 14-3437, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400@RM1399[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; W8SL@RM1549
Inspiron 14R, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM1849 [2.32kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Linux, 6 cell; W8@RM2049

ASUS does have some models that fit your sister's usage but the main problem here is the awful warranty support. i will still suggest at here but, its up to you whether you willing to take risk or not.

ASUS
A450CC, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT720M@RM2099[2kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8; 4-cell; colors: black/red/white
K46CB-WX060H, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 750GB, W8, 4-cell, OD

btw, i wont recommend you to buy now, 2 weeks later and so on cuz the main concern here is warranty period. also, at the moment your sister came back from Australia, there will be newer models released in the market.

thank you for your prompt response. I think i better ask her again see whether or not she need it urgently and the ODD problem. nowadays external dvd rom is much cheaper right? last time it used to cost at least RM 300 if i am not mistaken.

again, thank you so much  notworthy.gif
*
one USB 2.0 external DVD-RW costs RM89-RM109, while USB 3.0 costs RM119-RM139.
IINM, in the past, the external DVD-RW are still in this price range.

How is the warranty for Msi? which brand have better quality and support?
saw Lenovo Y510P yesterday and the edge if the casing is very rough (near the left hand where you will rest the hand while typing).
*
not sure about MSI's warranty service but so far, majority of the users are satisfied with the build quality.

Lenovo on the same hand, also do pretty good. so it is pretty a tough competition. sweat.gif

Yes, tough choice ... but most of the place I asked either no stock (online) or selling RRP for Y410P/Y510P.

I was thinking to get Y410P as I don't really need to have the big and high res screen, but then I come across MSI GP60 which is lighter and have matte screen. I love the matte screen viewing which no glare from the lights - especially for us who sit in front of the screen > 8 hours a day. But I haven't see a real GP60 yet, and worry about the build quality and support for it sad.gif
*
matte screen protectors can be DIYed. i had seen my brother added a matte film on his glossy Inspiron screen. this way is faster rather than wait for aftermarkets/pre-cut ones.

i would suggest you to pay extra RM200 for the RS-15, and you can get a powerful GPU. the backlit keyboard is customizable too.

2. Budget: +/- RM1,000

3. Usage: Light and Portable. Need Microsoft Office Excel (Don't want 3rd party)

4. Preferred laptop/screen size:
- I'm looking into Windows RT tablet with detachable keyboards.
- Saw Asus FT600 at Lowyat last night. Selling for Rm1,299. Looks quite okay.
- Any other models to recommend?
- Btw, Windows RT got any disadvantage? Need to know these before buying.

Surface RT, Nvidia Tegra 3 + 64GB SSD + (1366x768; touch)@RM1399[680g]; WRT, 2GB

the main disadvantage of Windows RT is they cant run x86 applications, which means any desktop apps (other than those apps available in store) that you wanted to install in this tablet is impossible.

1. Preferred Brand: none
2. Budget: under rm4000
3. Usage: high graphic rendering and autocad
4. Preference: Basically a desktop is more suitable for graphic rendering, but im scared my desktop could be stolen if i leave at the place, so can recommend me a laptop that can suffice a desktop? lifespan long, can change spec something like that? :] Alienware?

Would like to have a tablet/hybrid for carrying anywhere?

4. Preference: light, Full HD (if can), windows 8

extending the Dell XPS lineups warranty can be very expensive, almost the same as Alienware. so it is not reasonable to keep one's peace of mind with that 'beautiful price'.
