sifu, please advice me, currently i'm choosing between this two laptop.

1. Brand = Asus S551 i7 haswell, Lenovo Y410p i7 haswell
2. Budget = both is within my range budget
3. Usage = heavy multitasking. not really heavy gaming

hopefully you can advice me which one is the better choice.

sorry for late reply. I do open lots of tab and watching movie, video editing and some file downloads.  smile.gif

Open lots of tab (and I mean lots and lots of tabs), you may need more RAM.
Watching movie, any Intel IGPU can handle this.
Video editing - CPU processing power.
File download - any laptop can handle this.

S551LB-CJ075H, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT740M + 24GB mSATA + 1TB + (1366x768;touch)@RM3399[2.4kg], 8GB, W8, 3-cell
Y410p, i7-4700MQ + GT750M(GDDR5)@RM3199, 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty

The Y410P has more powerful CPU (quad vs duo) and GPU (750M vs 740M) vs the S551LB.
But either one should handle your usage requirement fine.

Preferred Brand
Any, but prefer reputable brands.

Budget
RM1000-rm1300

Usage
Mostly office work (microsoft) n watching movies

Preferred laptop/screen size
14" n slim design
*
Forget about the "slim design" for your budget smile.gif

You don't need discrete GPU for your usage, Intel HD will do fine. As for MS Office, as long as it does not involve heavy Excel (lots and lots of formula / VBA) or Access database, Intel Celeron will do.

Acer
E1-432-29552G50k, Intel 2955U + Intel HD@RM1099, 2GB, 500GB, FreeDOS
E1-470-33214G50s, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1399, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

Asus
X45A-VX078, Celeron 1000M + Intel HD@RM1199, 2GB, 500GB, FreeDOS, 1 year warranty

Dell
Inspiron 14-3437, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400@RM1399[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; W8SL@RM1549
Inspiron 14-3421, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1399[1.99kg], Win8SL, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell
Inspiron 14-3421, 1007U + Intel HD@RM999[1.99kg], Linux, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; W8SL@RM1099

Lenovo
G400s, Pentium 2020 + Intel HD@RM1349, 4GB, 500GB, W8

Toshiba
Satellite C800-1022, Pentium 2020M + Intel HD4000@Rm1369, 2GB, 500GB, W8SL, 2 years local warranty

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
FreeDOS mean you need to get and install OS yourself.

Inspiron 14 3421 has lots of different spec at slightly different price range.
Look for re-sellers at LYN garage sales, should be within your budget.

1. Any brand
2. Less than 1.5k
3. Academic usage, main word processing, surfing
4. Looking for a windows 8/8.1 hybrid

Hi guys, looking for a hybrid for mostly academic usage in university. The newly announced Asus T100 is something that I am looking for and can I know are there any similar alternatives in the market now? Thanks
*
QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Oct 18 2013, 11:49 AM)
Most of the hybrids are either more expensive OR doesn't come with W8
Closest would be this one:
11.6"
Acer
P3-131-21292G06, Pentium 2129Y + Intel HD + 60GB SSD + (1366x768 IPS;touch)@RM1799, 2GB, W8
P3-171-3322Y2G06, i3-3322y + Intel HD + 60GB SSD + (1366x768 IPS ; touch)@RM1999, 2GB, W8
P3-171-5333Y2G06, i5-3339Y + Intel HD + 60GB SSD + (1366x768 IPS; touch)@RM2299, 2GB, W8

*Prices in RRP
*
The Asus T100 is based on Bay Trail. Should be good enough for your usage.

Bay Trail is very new, iinm, no other model in Malaysia spec with this CPU hmm.gif

These are more to ultraportables right? As in you can't detach the screen to use as a tablet. How does the Pentium fares with the Atom (BayTrail or previous gen)? But I guess rm200 more and can get a better i3 definitely is a wiser choice tongue.gif
Yeah, not to mention the pricing is very attractive too. smile.gif hopefully more models with this CPU will come to Malaysia soon.
*
The P3 is a hybrid, i.e. work as a tablet, then dock with keyboard.
Pentium 2129Y is still more powerful than Bay Trail smile.gif But the Bay Trail will give longer battery runtime (assume similar battery capacity).

i see, but i notice that there is no microSD slot for these models, will that be a big problem? compare the T100 and P3, which one is more worth buying? and i saw on the acer website that there's a W700 which is quite similar to P3, what are their main differences?
*
W700? EOL already hmm.gif P3 actually was the cheapo replacement for W700 (which has nicer screen and better build ... cry.gif ).

Yup, P3 don't have microSD slot. So you need to connect to external storage via USB 3 port.

Depends on your usage. If you open 1 application at a time, don't do anything too heavy (just MS Word, browse internet, ... ), then Bay Trail is sufficient.
You said only word processing for academic usage, I take it your academic pursuit does not involve any software that need to manipulate large pool of data, or mulit-media, ...?
T100 also come with MS Office, iinm. So you may save some money there as well.

If you prefer more traditional form factor, then can consider:

Acer
V5-131-10074G50, 1007U + Intel HD@RM1149, 4GB, 500GB, W8SL
Asus
X201E-KX178D/9D , Intel 1007U + Intel HD@RM999, 2GB, 500GB, FreeDOS, 1 year
Dell
Inspiron 11, Celeron 2955U + Intel HD + (1366x768;touch)@RM1299, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

lol.. didnt know that W700 EOL already cause i still saw it on acer website. well, i plan to use it mainly for portability cause i got another laptop, Asus N55SF which is too heavy and bulky to bring to uni so most of the time i leave it at home for gaming and multimedia purposes. In terms of academic usage, i am looking at word/excel/ppt plus browser with many tabs for information finding. maybe some minimal movie watching and game during free time  biggrin.gif so i guess Bay Trail or Celeron or i3 are all sufficient for my usage
*
If you are not in a hurry to buy, wait a bit.
Other brands is bound to release Bay Trail spec machine as well soon (e.g. Dell Venue ... )

You may also want to think if you need stylus or not hmm.gif
For example: (don't buy this now)
ATIV Smart, Z2760 + Intel GMA + (1366x768; touch) + 64GB SSD@RM2499[774g w/o keyboard], 2GB, stylus, W8
This was released 6 months ( hmm.gif ) ago, look at that price laugh.gif
T100 has better CPU and IGPU than this, just smaller SSD.
What I want to point out is the nice stylus it come with, which enhance its usability quite a bit. No harm going out there and play with the demo.

QUOTE(Thibs @ Oct 19 2013, 01:11 AM)
Hi.

I'm thinking of getting a laptop. Asking around, I found that most of my mates recommended ASUS.

So, I read up some ASUS guidebooks and found that X45U - VX024 fits the my budget (RM1000 - RM1300).

X45U - VX024 Specs:
2nd Generation AMD® Brazos E2-1800 Processor (Dual-Core, 1.7GHz, 1M cache)
No Operating System (Will this be a problem?)
14” HD (1366 x 768) LED backlit
Radeon™ HD 6320 graphics with HDMI output
2GB DDR3 RAM
500GB SATA HDD
6 Cell Battery 4400 mAh

I would use the laptop for:
- Document editing (Microsoft Office)
- Watching Movies
- Store lots of pictures (Amateur DSLR Photographer)
- Use it for presentations (sometimes 4 hours long)

I would like to hear you guys' options on this laptop.
If there are any better options please do tell. I'm not limiting my options to ASUS only. (Prefer 14" though)

Thank you.
*
The E2 is a relatively weak CPU, comparable to the lowest end of current gen Celeron.
The CPU is good enough for your MS Words, movie watching, PowerPoint.
You store pictures only? If you don't edit picture with this laptop, it should be fine as well.
No OS mean you have to get OS and install yourself. If you are a student, you should be able to get cheap legal OS from school.
2GB RAM is kind of low, try to get more RAM (4G stick is ~ RM100, 8G ~ RM200).

Alternative:
Acer
E1-432G-29552G50k, Intel 2955U + Nvidia GT720M@RM1399, 2GB, 500GB, W8
E1-470-33214G50s, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1399, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

Dell
Inspiron 14-3421, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1399[1.99kg], Win8SL, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell

Lenovo
G400s, Pentium 2020 + Intel HD@RM1349, 4GB, 500GB, W8
G400s, i3-3110M + Intel HD4000@RM1299, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS; W8@RM1499

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Looking for business laptop/notebook.

1. Prefered brand: Any brand really, but I heard good things about IBM/Lenovo
2. Budget: RM3000
3. Usage: Mainly for working - MUST HAVE WINDOWS PRO. MS Office, web browsing, Skype and the likes
4. Preferred screen size: Above 14"

Thanks.

No more IBM smile.gif Thinkpad brand sold to Lenovo a long time ago. But IBM Malaysia still provide warranty support service for laptops sold by Lenovo Malaysia.
Don't see why you need 15" hmm.gif

Lenovo
ThinkPad Edge E431, i5-3230M + Intel HD4000@RM2589[2.15kg], 4GB, 1TB, W7P/W8P, anti-glare

If you find re-sellers selling E430 (previous model) with similar spec (same gen CPU), it is good as well (actually I'll say the touch pad in E430 is better (I'm just old-school who could not get used to touchpad without dedicated button tongue.gif ))

Price is RSP, negotiable.
Use the remaining of your budget to extend warranty to 3 years on site.

Yup, including. cant wait for reply so straightly go buy RM1249 Lenovo G400 ( forget) Spec 4G ram, Processor Intel Dc G2020
*
For your usage, even Intel Celeron is sufficient smile.gif Don't waste money on an i5 CPU.
To ensure "smoothness", you should spend money on getting more RAM if you multi-task a lot (4G stick ~ RM100, 8G stick ~ RM200), and put in a SSD (128G ~ RM300, 256G ~ RM600) to replace the HDD (keep as external storage).

G400s, Pentium 2020 + Intel HD@RM1349, 4GB, 500GB, W8

So you get about RM100 discount from RSP already. Just get the SSD and you are good to go thumbup.gif

Excuse me can you give opinion which one is better either asus vivobook s551lb or dell vostro 5470 tq
*
S551LB-CJ120H, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2699[2.4kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8, 3-cell

Vostro 5470, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2249, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell

I supposed you are comparing these two?

Similar CPU & GPU.
15" vs 14" - S551LB has bigger screen, showing the same image (same resolution).
Battery run time - 5470 is better.
5470 is lighter (1.6kg).
5470 has AC wireless, more future proof.
S551LB has touch screen, but touch screen in 15" standard form factor is not ideal (poke across keyboard is not ergonomic, and will strain the hinge).

Go with 5470, extend warranty to 3 years on site (~ RM300), which is still slightly cheaper. Better warranty support.

Hi sifus, looking for 2 laptops.

1. Preferred Brand : Any, MSI is good from what I read.
2. Budget : 4k
3. Usage :
- Gaming
- Coding ( Android, eclipse )
- Illustration, with drawing tablet ( Illustrator,photoshop,inkscape,manga studio )
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : 14" for portability
1. Preferred Brand : for mom, so thinking will need good service, Dell ?
2. Budget : 2k
3. Usage :
- Email
- Skype
- Microsoft office
- Watch videos
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : Must be slim and lightweight, so 14"
Thanks in advance!

A.
MSI don't have much choice in 14" form factor.
GE40-2OC, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GTX760M + (1600x900; anti-glare)@RM3499[1.8kg], 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8

B.
Vostro 5470, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400@RM1899, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell
Inspiron 14-3437, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400@RM1399[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; W8SL@RM1549
Extend warranty to 3 years on site ~ RM300. If you go with the Inspiron, you still have remaining budget to put in a SSD (128G ~ RM300) to replace the HDD (keep as external storage). (Btw, the 3 cell battery (48Whr) in 5470 actually has larger capacity than the 4 cell battery (40 Whr) of Inspiron (but less than the 6 cell battery (60 Whr) of Inspiron).

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Thanks for you opinion though now i''ll.be likely to buy the 5470 but there one more thing for extra an extra rm100 the s551lb comes with 24gb ssd, is it worth it?  as i'll be using this laptop for college work, streaming movie, multi tab web surfing, playing games such as dota 2, hon, lol and might use it to edit music...
*
For ~ RM300, you could get a 128GB (SATA or mSATA) SSD, and you want to pay RM100 extra to get 24GB mSATA SSD? rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif (Calculate the price / capacity)

The CPU & GPU for either models is sufficient for your usage. For college student, Dell Malaysia warranty support is a better bet.

SSD is good, it will make the laptop become very responsive. So if budget allow, grab a SSD and install OS and application in it (replace the HDD altogether).

Hi all.

Need your opinion on the 2 shortlisted laptops I plan to buy.

1. Dell Vostro 5470
2. Lennovo E431

Basically I need something that runs windows 7. Mostly for work and movies.

Or is there anything else that I should consider?

Appreciate the advice.
Thanks.
*
Dell Vostro 5470 don't have spec that come with W7.
That left you only with:
ThinkPad Edge E431, i5-3230M + Intel HD4000@RM2589[2.15kg], 4GB, 1TB, W7P/W8P, anti-glare
Make sure you upgrade to 3 years on site warranty.

May also consider:

Asus (according to sifus, apparently Asus Malaysia is setting up on site support team for its PRO series. Please check with re-sellers. Without on site support, not suitable for "work" purpose)
PRO45VJ-V0047X, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM2399[2.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W7P
PRO45VJ-V0056X, i3-3120M +Intel HD4000@RM1999[2.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W7P

HP
ProBook 4440s, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM2549, 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7P, anti-glare

Dell (we don't have the price list, but I know it is priced competitively vs Thinkpad Edge)
Latitude 14 3000

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

hi guys, can i know for Acer P3 and the new Asus T100, can they run most of the windows software like vlc player, itunes, etc.? And is it possible to install those software to the microSD or external HDD? And can i install a printer drive on them and use the USB port to connect to a printer and print my stuff? Thanks!
*
As long as tablet is running W8 or W8.1 (not W8RT or W8.1RT), then it can run normal legacy window desktop applications.

Install software onto microSD or external HDD can be done (under W8 or W8.1), but you sacrifice in term of access speed and convenience.

Printer driver can be installed on device that run W8 or W8.1.
Through USB port - need to make sure the tablet has USB port or microUSB (you need the appropriate cable).
Network printer (either the printer has LAN or wireless LAN, or connect through USB or other port to a cheap print server (you do know that some wireless router can also serve as wireless print server? tongue.gif )) - personally I think this is easiest. As long as the tablet is connected to network (wireless LAN), install the driver and do the configuration, and you can print from anywhere (my setup at home).

These are 15" MSI within your budget.
The most interesting is the GX60 with HD8970M smile.gif but that is bottle-neck by the A10 (but if you know how to handle it ... )
The GE60 with GT750M actually has weaker GPU compare to the GE40 (GT760M), but higher screen resolution (which also mean games will run slower in GE60 FHD screen native resolution)

I checked with Dell in low yat plaza last week. Apparently they can sell me a DOS version of the 5470 and install a Windows 7 OS which I purchase from them.
Warrenty wise is still the same.
Is the 4th gen Intel processor in the Dell much better than the 3rd gen processor on the Lenovo? Where can I get the E431 in low yat plaza?

That's good to know smile.gif
If you are ok with the glossy screen in 5470 (normally biz prefer matte), then it is a pretty good choice.

CPU, the 4th gen Haswell give much better battery runtime compare to 3rd gen Ivy Bridge.
Also note that the Haswell in 5470 is ULT, which run at much lower TDP compare to the M CPU in the E431.
So overall, 5470 will have better battery runtime vs the E431.
