the house I notice it has the lan cable port assigned to each hall area, would the normal unified router work? or I need to connect it to another gigabit router

If my NAS faulty can I take the HDD to another brand NAS and access the file back? Currently using Smartstor and in the market nobody selling this brand anymore, can't get replacement anymore sweat.gif

Qnap and Asustor which one is more reliable? I'm considering this 2 brands since they can support jdownloader brows.gif

You can't take HDD from one NAS brand to another.

I have not use Asustor before hence I can't comment. Between QNAP & Synology, I prefer Synology for their UI.

That would be a big problem. sweat.gif
I need to find replacement, not that my current NAS got problem but already using for few years, who know if suddenly it died.

I see Qnap ui look more like iPad ui while Synology ui more like Windows. Asustor also like iPad/Android ui but also have side widget like Synology.

For same price range Synology seem have lower spec compared Qnap and Asustor. Like DS418 only Realtek CPU while others using Intel CPU. But I think Synology have the best in system reliability?

Synology is not a reliable too. I already experience 2 unit spoiled.

But because of easy to use and get use to it the UI, I choose back Synology. Beside that, it easy for me to transfer the HDD from the dead unit.

You already have experience. Look for specialist brand that already stay long in NAS industry.

Just realised that all top 3 NAS brands and even Promise are Taiwan company. Taiwan really monopolise this business.

Asus seem to be the biggest company among them, so they got the money to keep improving their products. But on the other hand they are the youngest in NAS, and not as popular as Syn and Qnap so there's possibility of the subsidiary being closed down if not making money.

Synology seems like the best choice in term of company experience and user choice. But like you said already 2 spoiled, and the spec is lower than other brands. Headache..

For centralize file storage. Sometimes transfer few GB's of files so having better spec can help to make it faster.

I think Synology have no problem transferring large file in high speed.

You can check the write/read speed they state in the website.

I m using DS1815+ and run on aggregate Lan with switch. The speed is damn fast.

I do post way back the setup and speed test in this topic.

Guys, need some advice here. I'm currently running a Synology DS 215J with two 3TB WD Reds on SHR.

I am thinking of upgrading to a DS418 Play but not sure of the best path for this.

Would it be a good idea to take the two 3TB drives, slot them in the DS418 Play along with another two 4TB drives and run SHR on them?

Can I keep the data? Is it practical? What are the implications? I heard that I will end up with only another 3TB only instead of 4TB. Is that true?

Worried the drives might breakdown soon as it is already 4 years old now and I'm starting to run out of space.

It will separated into 2 volume if different size. As what I experience now.

Are you still intend to keep the 3tb ?

Better migrate the data to 4tb, takeout the 3tb. Replace with 4tb.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.

I did think about that, but was wondering if it was more cost effective to reuse the old 3TB disks and sell the DS215J second hand.

Money no enough ... sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

The budget very much depend are you an exhaustive or simply just store some TVB drama.

Either you get a 4bay with large size HDD or 8bay with smallet size HDD. Which 8bay have future expansion if full.

Model like DS418 or DS1817/1817+ is good enough for home.

If the usage LAN network activity is busy or many user, it is best to have switch and use the unified router as internet gateway. The unified router might not have enough port for your house. Do the math. But most of the time will be in WIFI more.

It is gigabit world now. Anything you buy must be gigabit speed.
*
ok, so now I need to get the UPS, then a gigabit switch router
the maxis modem just plug into the switch and the NAS into the switch as well

IP recorder also into the switch too?
