I'm thinking of setting up NAS for my parents house, what are the equipment recommended currently
I will be controlling it remotely if possible, would want to access to the NAS from a different location as well
is it possible to stream movies from the NAS from a diff location? provided the upload speed is good enough?

QUOTE(ozak @ Jul 19 2018, 11:41 AM) Depend your budget. More expensive, more speed. What you see normally is download speed. Not the upload speed. Upload speed are lower usually for home. So check the upload speed when get a package. More than 10mbps should be ok. If you stream HD, higher is better. Don't forget, beside streaming, other people also use for phone and pc. You will assign a DDNS on the NAS. Synology have the server to track your IP for free. It is just like any website you type on the browser or apps to access your NAS. To watch on TV, either get a android tv box or built in TV player. Download the apps or using the TV box apps. For phone, download the DS apps. For pc, use the chrome or IE browser to access your NAS. It have the media player. thanks ya, im stating 50mbps upload because my current package is 100 down 50 up thats the max we could get here in JB just curious, whats the app needed in the tv player assuming preferably the tv has android built in to download this certain app I guess

QUOTE(ozak @ Jul 19 2018, 12:06 PM) Try test the actual upload speed. You can use the built in player and setup the player link to the NAS. Or download the Apps (DS synology) from apps store. Synology have apps for android and ios. Pretty easy to use and good UI video apps. example of my DS video apps in iphone. nice..... let me get the NAS 1st then only bombard this thread with stupid questions

QUOTE(ozak @ Jul 19 2018, 02:02 PM) 1) Depend how exhaustive you are. Movie collector or just watch and delete. The file is big for 1080p. Don't forget 4K. Your NAS full in no time. 2) It is 2 LAN cable connect out to switch. High speed download/upload. Also good if 1 LAN spoil. 3) It is a router switch. 4) Incase power trip. You don't want to corrupt the data. thanks again shifu just curious, what could I achieve with a. 6k budget and b. 10k budget the house I notice it has the lan cable port assigned to each hall area, would the normal unified router work? or I need to connect it to another gigabit router

QUOTE(ozak @ Jul 20 2018, 10:13 AM) The budget very much depend are you an exhaustive or simply just store some TVB drama. Either you get a 4bay with large size HDD or 8bay with smallet size HDD. Which 8bay have future expansion if full. Model like DS418 or DS1817/1817+ is good enough for home. If the usage LAN network activity is busy or many user, it is best to have switch and use the unified router as internet gateway. The unified router might not have enough port for your house. Do the math. But most of the time will be in WIFI more. It is gigabit world now. Anything you buy must be gigabit speed. ok, so now I need to get the UPS, then a gigabit switch router the maxis modem just plug into the switch and the NAS into the switch as well IP recorder also into the switch too?
