Hi guys,

May i know which place would be the best to look for Synology NAS?

I am looking for a home NAS, mainly for file backup purposes with the ability to store and stream media (photos, videos). Something with 2 drive bay that doesnt break the bank would be a good start.

And will it be able to say, stream 720p videos via wifi without lag? I mean connect the NAS to my router via LAN, but other PCs stream video files via wifi.

Thanks

- No issues on WIFI for streaming 720p

DNS-320L is a good choice to buy? i hope to go for basic NAS first before i try out much more expensive nas...

Usage:
-personal cloud (can access from external net, all nas should be able to be access from external net right?)
-photo and video streaming through ipad, hp etc

Any recommended except DNS-320L?

It is better just get the synology. It meet your exactly requirement. They have the photo and video program and apps for smart phone. Easy to use.

There is newer version of Seagate NAS drive (very much similar to WD Red). My preference would go to WD Red.

Anyone using WD Red for surveillance station?

Wonder how long it last as CCTV is quite HDD intensive.

The promoters told me get Enterprise grade drive instead sweat.gif
Because their WD red/purple drive that use on CCTV keep dying or bad sector iirc, even after replaced new drive.

Had one WD RED/AV-GP 3TB, bad sector appeared within a year even it's just light usage(same as they said), i rma-ed it and eventually sold it off, and bought Toshiba 3TB instead.
So fat both of the Toshiba drives does not have sign of hiccup yet.

I am using WD Red for storage currently but I plan to use it for surveillance in the future.

Maybe I will upgrade to WD Purple if problem did arise.

Those Seagate drives are fast 7200rpm spinners and would probably give problems due to heat.

Can you post the temps of the Seagate drives you're running?

Still very happy with my WD Reds. smile.gif

Very quite here. hmm.gif

Brought this NAS Synology DS1815+ 3mth ago.

user posted image

It is an upgrade from my old DS409+ which have been using since 2009. It still running find now. Accept the capacity already overflow (6TB max), and probably slow streaming for the HD movie (some).
user posted image

The package include the NAS and 4pcs of HDD red WD 6tb. Give me a capacity of total 18tb for the SHR raid.
user posted image

Setting up and running find now so far.

It already 29% used. And still transferring my old file to this new NAS. Not sure the capacity is enough for this moment.

Guys need some help, I am new to this NAS stuff.

My external USB HDD casing just died, HDD and data inside still ok.

I now like to find a new replacement HDD casing with below criteria:
1. Can be connect by wifi, which mean I can setup anywhere in my house as long as access to AC power socket and same wireless router; no need close to PC (by USB cable) or router (by LAN cable).
2. Usage: personal use storage, torrent, streaming 1080p video file thru wireless (local only, not internet)
3. Access from other places thru internet is a plus not a must, my screamyx upload is like shyte anyway.

Please recommend me a HDD housing that can fulfill the above criteria, thanks.

Nice. I like the specs of the 1815+ especially the quad core processor and the 4x LAN with Link Agregration.

May I ask how much did you get the unit for?

I've been trying for the longest time to purchase the HGST. It seems locally, only Seagate and WD are available unless you're willing to take chances and ride the high exchange rate wave by ordering overseas...

So between Seagate NAS and WD Red, I picked WD Red because of the good experience with warranty exchange.

The last I'm aware WD and Seagate has their own portable wireless hardisk. I have the Seagate 500GB Wireless Plus that I only use them when travelling and when my kids want to watch their cartoons. Has built-in WiFi and built-in battery. You can also use it as a normal USB external hardisk and connect it directly to your PC / notebook via USB if you're not using the WiFI. No experience with WD's Passport Wireless but I assume they are similar. I don't think their built-in softwares gives the ability to torrent.

In terms of performance, not too sure. I did try 1080p mkv files and it's a hit or miss. I played the files wirelessly with the native player on my phone. I did not expect too much from the Seagate's WiFi and it's transcoding ability is almost zero. My kids cartoon series are less demanding and there is no problems with playback.

However at home, I have a Synology DS2413+ that is connected to my home network and also to a wireless router. I have successfully played movies natively on my phone or have Synology transcode the files. I experience smooth playback when I play movies natively on my phone probably due to good WiFi connection. On the other hand, the experience with the Synology transcoding files is also good because of the powerful CPU in the Synology. You can do a lot of other things on the Synology on top of torrenting. Anyway, I don't torrent and that feature is one I don't use. For media playback, I only stream HD audio (lossless) via WiFi and for Bluray playback, I prefer wired LAN connection.

The Seagate and WD wireless are more expensive but they provide an all in one solution but going the cheaper route, you can connect any portable hardisk to a decent wireless router thaty is able to support external USB drive and play your files directly with proper media player softwares on your wireless devices. A caveat is that the suggested cheaper solution is not so portable.

I've been eyeing this model since 1813+.

It cost me RM3450.
