hv you consulted with synology support?
*
I post it at Synology forum. So far no reply.

And I asking local support. When they heard this model, don't keen on repair. Costly.

So I try to migrate the HDD to the new NAS. Put all 4 HDD according to the old NAS position.

Fired up and the status led blinking orange. From the PC, I use synology assistance to dictate the NAS.

Able to dictate the NAS and click connect it. Web load up and ditacted that the HDD is migrated from old NAS.

Than just follow the instruction and the NAS install a new DSM on the HDD without disturb the file.

Once everything done, you can log in as usual.

Pretty easy and fast for the HDD migration. So now have to copy those file didn't backup before to the new HDD.

Nice, another reason for using synology NAS. thumbsup.gif
How long does the migration took?
*
Around 10 min. and it reboot again after that.

Than log in again from the web. Everything normal with the new DSM.

Now still copying out some file to a new HDD. Decide to upgrade the HDD to bigger size too.

At least now you can use DSM 6. So many new cool features. Virtual DSM, file request <- this is long overdue. smile.gif
*
I no expert. I also don't no what those new future use for.

But the speed did improve a lot. With the link aggregation.

virtual dsm can create another DSM with another network port good if say you want to run a dedicated VPN client for streaming rather than using your existing connection.

you can only see speed improvement on link aggregation if you have many users connected to it. i tried bonding 2 nics and pulling files from it don't see much improvement for 1 connection. make sure you have a managed switch else it is just redundancy.
*
Compare the old NAS, it is huge different.

yes 2009 tech vs 2015 tech big diff wat... smile.gif

you should surpass the 100MB/sec mark per file copy easily. if everything is on gigabit (to be honest i personally think cat5e and cat 6 not much diff if short cables.
*
Not sure the cable. I just pull whatever I have now to try it out the speed. Will check again when configure it to cat6 cable.

I still don't no how to optimise the switch. At the moment just plug and play.

I might just setup it to 1 link aggregation. With the previous bad experience with the LAN port spoil, save the another 2 LAN port for safety.

Hope 1 link aggregation speed is enough for the PC, 3D media stream and torrent. smile.gif

I also noob in link aggregation
If for 1-2 users at same time accessing the NAS it will give better bandwidth if I got 2 LAN cables attached from the NAS to gigabit switch?
*
Yes. it give better bandwidth.

It just like 1+1=2. As simple as that.

I have Samsung HU7000 series ,no ethernet connection but planning to upgrade to KS series once it launch here.
Tried playing around with plex from laptop ( wired to router , wireless to tv ) and it's almost unplayable even 1080P movies, much less 4K.  Not sure if it's due to transcoding or wifi connection (using VIP10) ( not exactly technically proficient here  sad.gif  )

That's why wanna confirm NAS route is capable otherwise I'll stick to 2.5"hdd connected to usb port .
*
I m in the mid of setting up the nas and the network to AV. Should be finish by this weekend.

Have many big file and 3D in the nas which previous setup have difficult to play. Believe to be speed streaming problem.

I m using media player to play. NAS --> media player-->receivers-->tv

Forget the router and wifi. Use switch to connect.

Media player like HI-Media you mean ?  I have it next to tv but actually planning to get rid of it once I got NAS.
Switch will just add more box for me, anyway don't know what advantage it will have over direct router conn to tv.
*
Yes, but better than hi-media. My tv cannot play all the format. I need the media player to play all the format, organize the media, photo, music etc.

Unless you have the gigabit router, you need the switch for speed and streaming. Forget the wifi to play 1080p. It is unstable. My tv currently is wifi connected to router. Will change it to lan cable and switch the wifi doggle to bluray player.

I hv tried playing via WiFi before I got a gigabit switch, works fine for me 1080 res and 3d files
From few gb up to 20gb++
*
It is maxis Fiber original router. Don't think it is gigabit. The wifi signal so unstable in some time. Even just few meter away with a wall between.

Just watching YouTube is pain in the ass.

That's why don't have faith on this router. Get a switch better.

The setup is almost done. Left the wire arrangement and the power surge protection.

And strongly consider the LAN line protection too. After discuss and some advise from the cal-lab tech in their office.

Test the speed. Pretty fast.

1) PC write/copy to NAS -132Mb/s
2) Media payer streaming no lag even with PC activity write/copy and ipad streaming video.
3) 3D content streaming no problem and lag. Video run without any jerk.
4) Youtube play on TV seems faster respond. No lag or buffer.

Guys I got questions: if you all already have a NAS or server to store your data, do you all still maintain another backup somewhere? I.e. a offsite backup of your NAS or external drive?
*
Depend your budget.

The best is another location another NAS.

Low budget, just an external drive. But just backup important file only.

My company is plan to buy a NAS for office use.

Main purpose:
1- shared folders (currently those share folders are in my server and my server need some space for new coming b2b system so plan move shared folders to NAS).
- Volume1/Data/HR              (For HR user only)
  - Volume1/Data/Account        (For Account user only)
  - Volume1/Data/Sales          (For Sales only)

Can set every user's right? like above?

2- backup accounting data.

3- centralized the sources for latest update (now we're email to head of department especially sales if any info  update such as product picture, price list, documents etc. then the head will pass to their teams.

Yesterday went to AllIT hypermarket and they suggest WD my cloud mirror, any comment on this?

Get the 2bay between your Budget. Must at least 2bay for backup.

The apps inside is more than what you need.

what about QNAP ?

i saw this 2 4bay NAS storage
QNAP NAS GIGABIT 4-BAY (TS-431P)      RM1580
Synology NAS GIGABIT 4-BAY (DS-416J) RM1799

in term of spec and price, which 1 is more worth to invest?
*
I never experience Qnap. So can't tell.

Beside the NAS, you need to look at the apps that come together. This is important for how usefull to keep your pic and media file. What extra function that the apps can offer to you.

Without the apps bundle, it is almost no use with the empty NAS.

You need to know which brand have more community here. Incase you need to get help if trouble. Service available.

The price is not important with that small different.

thanks for the comment. ya sometimes community is more important.

i've a technical question need to ask. can i share partition/space with my family with security features, like they have to login with username and password ? lets say i wanna share 500gb of partition/space each for 3 person with security features.

can i do that with NAS ?
*
Yes. You can share as many as possible.

It even can do more than that. Assign to share media and picture too.

my synology nas show disk 1 degraded and beeping. i need to replace the hdd in order for it to stop beeping?

what does degraded means? hdd damage already? such a short life span?
*
Try use inside the built in tools to diagnose the problem.

If the problem still there, than change the hdd.

I have the same problem where the hdd install not Long and it fail. Replace it and it fine. Not the unit problem but the hdd. But it is strange that, the fail hdd put to others thing and it work fine.
