QUOTE(iZuDeeN @ Apr 2 2024, 02:29 PM) Guys I tried to use Xpenology on my old HP PC core i3 (2017) and 4gb ram.. someone get stuck and can't seem to load the DSM ; likely the USB stick is not compatible Anyway I need a Synology NAS ; mainly or only using to backup Google photos. I need the AI recognition and metadata manager Which model should I consider .. is 2x4tb sufficient? It's not just about sufficient but how reliable and secure your important data in the NAS. The possibility both HDD failure is high in 2 bays. Cause you buy the hdd at the same time and same batch. If the data is important, get the 4bays. Photo doesn't take up much space. But video and movie collection will fill up in no time. Check back your history how fast you expand your pic and collection per yrs. And estimate the hdd size.

QUOTE(fishermanG @ May 14 2024, 08:55 PM) Hey guys. Where do you get your NAS drives from? The ones from Shopee are tempting especially those from China. They offer 3 years warranty though but i'm sure returns for claim will be challenging. Anyone tried serverpartdeals before? Crazy. You believe this warranty from China? My NAS spoiled before due to Intel chips problem. Lucky brought from local. 1 to 1 exchange even expired warranty. (It is known to manufacture problem)

QUOTE(acbc @ May 16 2024, 11:01 AM) Had a shocker last week on the DS-2411+. Out of a total of 12 drives, 1 drive went missing. As a result, the unit had to do a parity check which took 2 days with 10 drives. The missing drive got replaced by a hot spare automatically. Once done, fucking TNB decided to cut the power and once back after 3 hours, the missing drive came back. I replaced the drive immediately and now seems ok. It will remain as a hot spare. The fan mod on the DS-1010+ failed. The CPU fan cannot be modded. The 2 case fans no problem. Haih. Gonna retire this unit once I find another 5 or 8 or 12 bay. Fed up with the email warnings and constant beeping. That sound pretty dangerous to the HDD and the unit. No UPS to safe shutdown?

QUOTE(xxboxx @ Feb 11 2025, 09:10 AM) Past few months or a year or so, there's a sudden surge of Seagate HDD being sold at considerably low prices that what it usually is. Recently it was exposed those are used HDD with its S.M.A.R.T info wiped out. Now new info have come out, those HDD were from Chia crypto mining farms. Even the seller doesn't know it is used HDD Used Seagate drives sold as new traced back to crypto mining farmsPlenty in Shopee. I m skeptical and ask the seller got warranty or not. But no answer.

Finally my Synology DS1815+ RIP. This is my second NAS after the DS409. Last weekend morning wakeup, whole store room smelling something burn. It happened before when the NAS power supply spoiled. This time thought is the same, replace the powersupply. But cannot ON back. Press the button, nothing happens. Time to look for a new set. Probably buying back the 8bay DS1825+.

QUOTE(ntw @ Oct 1 2025, 08:30 PM) I want 1) hassle-free to run 2) Don't need crack my head to solve problem. I m not IT guy. 3) lower cost to run in terms of power usage. The NAS is run on 7/11 and no income is generated from it. 4) Synology have pic/video apps that I can share with family and relative around the world. 5) My work place is also using synology. I can sync backup with it.
