Decide not to mix/run with ironwolf.

Cause after buy, if have problem, I can't do anything with the HDD. Risky. sweat.gif

How long you use your WD Red already ?

I run array of 8 set for 6 years 24/7, solid performance no issue. Satisfied. Attached with another backup system so I'll keep this running and still using for other use.
*
Pass 5yrs.

2pcs already down. And replace with Ironwolf.

Nice, very good NAS box and very stable low maintenance unit.

For custom and higher performance / bigger scale, there are other unix based setup can be made. Petabytes of storage are no issue.
*
House use only la.

Petabytes ? Not the NAS kill me. The HDD cost will kill me. sweat.gif

Cost maintain of HDD is more expensive than the NAS.

Unless there is some income coming from the NAS. biggrin.gif

Isn't' Exos a SMR drive? That's why I ended up buying the Ironwolf pro 16TB
*
I don't no.

Didn't read the spec. Look at the price attractive.

At the end, didn't buy it. Worry can't mix and match with the existing ironwolf.

Hi all sifus,
Wanna ask, if going to setup a NAS system mainly for movies storing and streaming movie with 1080p up to 4k, what type of NAS storage is recommended?

Currently owned 8 nos of external hdd with total of 15TB (almost runs out of space).

I am looking at synology DS220+(2bay) and/or DS420+(4bay) with at least starting with x1 8TB ironwolf hdd, do you guys recommend this hardware? should i go raid this with x2 8TB? budget quite concerning here... haha

thanks
*
I believe you collect movie base on your 15tb not enough space?

Advise better save up to get 8bay.

2bay is meaningless. Even 4bay. Very fast you run out of space.

If not, then just get 2bay is enough.

Look for read/write fast and able to aggregate link.

Yes. 15TB is insufficient, but it takes roughly 5 years time to reach this stage.. but since 4k movie is the trend now, I believe it will required shorter time to reach the next 15tb in no time.

8bay is too much for now?
I saw some review said that you can link a few 4bay together or even 8bay in the future if really needed.
*
2bay max capacity is 16tb. with 1 backup. No point to take 2bay.

4bay max is 48tb with raid. 3yrs might full.

Cause you will keep more on 4k size material.

Yes, you can get a hdd encloser to link up the NAS.

I m movie collector.

it is such a pain that I need pay so much for startup... its like going to have at least rm5k for just starting, 920+ RM2200+/- and 2 units of 12TB ironwolf NAS HDD RM3400+/-
*
It all in this threat. Read back.

The world now have Netflix and hulu. Why you need a NAS ?

NAS is an expensive gadget. It cost alot to maintain for this hobby.

Which NAS setup is the easiest to setup for replacing MS Onedrive and Google photos?

I need to deploy the solution to non-techies on their android phone for auto photo/video backup and replace their onedrive/google drive for pc file backup.

I have never setup a NAS before.

Things I currently have:

I have unlimited upload/download fiber optic internet in my house. 100mbps download/50 mpbs upload.

A Netgear R7000 router connected to a TP-Link Deco E4 mesh wifi. The wifi on the netgear has been disabled. Wired connection is still used. 2 free ethernet ports. The mesh wifi has 2 ethernet ports as well.

A unused intel NUC PC with 4th gen CPU.

Thanks

My experience on Synology for Photo/Video is good. Frequent using it.

You can either set up for common use or individual photo/video. Backup and view.

Download the synology apps for ios/android.

Get a switch data control and connect the NAS Synology with aggregate.

At the moment, 3 individuals wil require access to their HD space on the NAS. Each without intruding/seeing other people's HD. Work independent of each other. Can it setup that too?

Does this Synology come with HD or need to purchase separately? I see two different prices in Lazada and Shoppee.
*
It can setup for each individual use. Backup, photo/video, music, file etc. Can setup for over 100 user. (Forget the actual)

You're the admin to control the NAS.

It come without the hdd. HDD size depend your usage every yrs and forecast how long it last before full.

Setup the NAS in Raid. At least buy the 4hdd bay.

but can use 2 HD right? One to mirror the other one? How long do the drives last?
My experience from 2 bay to 4 bay and last, 8 bay.

If for personnel use less traffic, 2bay is ok.

The cons about 2bay is,

1) The only way to expand if run out of space is by HDD. No extra bay to expand. Both HDD have to change together.
2) The chance of both hdd spoil is high. Cause you normally buy the hdd together. Backup is like no backup. Unless you can buy hdd separate time and place.
3) it only provided 1 LAN to communicate. If the LAN port spoil, you can't access your data anymore. No spare LAN.

My 2bay last about 5yrs, 4bay last about 6-7yrs. Now using 8bay.

HDD lifespan very much depend on brand I guess.

I have WD red last 5yrs and some still running. Have Samsung last 8yrs and some still running. Have new seagate stil running fine.l

Hi, the 50 TB data is important and cannot be replaced.

So I still need minimum capacity of 100 TB.

Thanks for your great input.

I am kind of lazy, haha! So may I know which prebuild NAS can fit in 100 TB (based on current available HDD capacity) and if can still expandable in future. smile.gif

From your 8 TB, already required more than 10 bays. Wonder how much if they is any NAS had at least 10 bays so I can get at least 80 TB.
*
How long to take for you to expand the size from 0 to 100tb?

And are you willing to spend on the initial cost?

That determines the type of NAS to get.

I use around 3 years fill up 50 TB. So I think another 50 TB is another 3 years.
*
That is fast phase.

So you have to start with 50tb initial.

The best way I think is 12bay for the start.

7 x 16tb hdd with SHR Raid 5 to begin.

That would give you 6 x 16tb = 96tb and 1 redundacy. 96tb - 50tb =46tb free. This should last you for 2yrs+.

And each yrs, you can add 1pcs hdd or 2 to increase the size. Till max 176tb.

176tb max on 12bay can last you for 8yrs+ and more.

The 12bay is not limit yet. If use Synology.

12bay NAS can expand the storage to another 24bay. (12 bay expansion x 2 only storage without CPU)

That is the cheapest cost for easy setup and maintain I guess.
