For centralize file storage. Sometimes transfer few GB's of files so having better spec can help to make it faster.
*
I think Synology have no problem transferring large file in high speed.

You can check the write/read speed they state in the website.

I m using DS1815+ and run on aggregate Lan with switch. The speed is damn fast.

I do post way back the setup and speed test in this topic.

Guys, need some advice here. I'm currently running a Synology DS 215J with two 3TB WD Reds on SHR.

I am thinking of upgrading to a DS418 Play but not sure of the best path for this.

Would it be a good idea to take the two 3TB drives, slot them in the DS418 Play along with another two 4TB drives and run SHR on them?

Can I keep the data? Is it practical? What are the implications? I heard that I will end up with only another 3TB only instead of 4TB. Is that true?

Worried the drives might breakdown soon as it is already 4 years old now and I'm starting to run out of space.
*
It will separated into 2 volume if different size. As what I experience now.

Are you still intend to keep the 3tb ?

Better migrate the data to 4tb, takeout the 3tb. Replace with 4tb.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.

I did think about that, but was wondering if it was more cost effective to reuse the old 3TB disks and sell the DS215J second hand.

Money no enough ...  sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
*
No problem at all.

ok, so now I need to get the UPS, then a gigabit switch router
the maxis modem just plug into the switch and the NAS into the switch as well

IP recorder also into the switch too?
*
I m not familiar with the IP cam for NAS.

You can check on their Forum and the NAS manual setup.

i was using 4x3TB on a synology DS412 config as SHR. its now full.

then I bought a DS414 come with 4x4TB. how should I configure it ? i.e. 1 of the 3TB with 4TB, until all complete ?

can I still keep the quickconnect id on the new NAS ?
*
Copy the setting over to the new NAS. Quickconnect will be in new NAS.

Than transfer the content.

Hi everyone! Just ordered a Synology 1019+ with 5x4TB Ironwolf. I haven’t been downloading for quite a few years, mostly streaming and backing stuff up on cloud services.

Just got my APC BX1400U, now just waiting for the NAS to be delivered rclxm9.gif

Will upgrade later - hopefully hdd prices will drop down by the time I need more space.

No problem in deleting and downloading again the media files though.
*
Very hard to upgrade when the cost is high.

My 4x6tb and 1x3tb already full. Upgrade to 10tb or 12tb... That hdd cost killing. sweat.gif

Got a good deal with the 4tb ironwolf which was rm498 each. I even snagged 1 extra hdd for a cold spare at rm457. Planning to run SHR1 and having the backup HDD just in case 1 drive fails.

Given that 6tb discs cost around rm820, 8tb for rm1080, 10tb for rm1480 and 12tb for rm1950, I am hedging my bets that in a year or 2 the prices will come down somewhat. Cost/TB not worth it at this moment sweat.gif

I've never RMA a hdd before, do you know how long it takes to replace a hdd under warranty? :?
*
6tb so expensive now ? shocking.gif

Remember brought that time with NAS about RM560/pcs.

Damn, like that more difficult to upgrade the HDD size. The cost is killing. cry.gif

Will check the HDD 12tb cost with my supplier.

I m using WD red. So far so good. Don't no how reliable the SG ironwolf.

Been RMA for my portable WD HDD which brought in US. I email to them. Trough email responds I send it back to WD in Vietnam. Have to bear the shipping cost. In 2week time, they send a new 1 to me.

6TB for RM560? How many years ago is that?
For some years already RM500 can only get 4TB

I been using Ironwolf for 1 year so not long enough to know how reliable it is. It got IronWolf Health Management which give additional monitoring than SMART but not sure how helpful it will be. One thing it is better are the temperature is around 44 celcius while Red is around 48 celcius, NS300 the worst at 53 celcius. In non air conditioning room.
Brought 4yrs ago.

HDD should be getting cheaper per byte. No? sad.gif

I don't have good experience with seagate HDD previously. I hope it improve now and would like to change to ironwolf. Cause it's cheaper.

For server, my experience so far is Samsung and WD. Mostly now all WD red.

So far the temperature is

In the store room.

Some more with falling price of SSD it should be HDD price also going down.
But that is not happening. Maybe because SSD price per GB is still far higher than HDD.

Just notice I typo, it should be N300.
My thinking is should mix HDD brand so that if one brand have design flaw which lead to premature failure it will not affect my entire HDD.
I believe last time after Seagate infamous HDD failing, they have redesign and after that didn't hear still got such issue.
*
Will wait till end of this yrs see Amazon sale got cheaper iromwolf or not. Would like to get 4pcs 12TB or higher.

Local damn expensive for NAS HDD. sweat.gif

It might be due to the shrinking of the HDD market, the price can't be cheaper anymore? SSD is getting cheaper.

But I read all said the same. Better to be have a same brand and type of HDD for NAS. If mix, will effect the speed. Not sure what else.

You treating your NAS more like a PC laugh.gif

No matter which is superior, as long as have protection against bit-rot and more importantly data degradation, is very much good already. BTRFS and ZFS provide this as well as self healing.

https://blogs.oracle.com/timc/demonstrating-zfs-self-healing

Recently plenty case of NAS being bruteforce and ransonware also give good reason to block your NAS from being accessible to the internet.
*
kena before my NAS bruteforce. Slow down the network like crazy.

Last last check, hack from China from the log list.

Last friday suddenly 1 HDD 3TB Wd develope bad sector and crashed. sweat.gif

user posted image

This HDD don't have raid and data protector. But lucky I can copy out the file.

Immediately swipe the hdd out. This time I try not to switch off the NAS.

Slice out the bad hdd and slot in 4 hdd. It detect new hdd and beep warning.

Than perform setup and wait for it finish. Before copy back the file.

Overall, it is easy solving problem and much more safer for data on the new NAS now. Compare last time.

2 week ago, suddenly 3 drive start to develop bad sector on my NAS. Beeping whole day.

2 drive was able to repair even report of I/O error and showing bad sector. probably minimum damage. So it still showing "Normal".

Taken out the drive to check with PC. Showing plenty bad sector. No choice but to change. sad.gif

user posted image

Even it can be hot swap, but I don't take the chance. Off the NAS before swap out.

For RAID, it cannot replace all the bad drive together. It has to be swap 1 pcs at a time. After rebuilding the parity check, and show normal, then only able to swap another drive.

Otherwise, all your data are gone. It's a risky repair since no way to back up the large size file.

user posted image

This time I try the seagate ironwolf. No more WD.

WD drive last me about 5yrs. Pretty short life compare another Samsung drive in the NAS.

user posted image

Run back the NAS and repair the Volume. For such a big size drive, it took 24hr to repair. So about 3days to finish up the process.

user posted image

I guess more drive will die in a short time. Since I buy it in batch. Got to standby extra drive.

Having a NAS and taken care is expensive. sweat.gif

ozak better swap out other WD Red units soon. In my experience, they are usually prone to failure at the end or after the warranty period. I bought several synology NAS (deployed in SMEs) with these WD REDs installed and all failed similarly. Never again, will only purchase Iron Wolfs in the future.
*
Will do.

But it cost me alot to swap all out. cry.gif

Will buy 1 by 1 slowly swap it out. sad.gif

The price of ironwolf going up this 2 weeks.

I build a budget NAS with WD Green 8 years ago thinking cheaper HDD with RAID-1 is okay for data... biggest mistake in my life... I've lost 4TB of valuable data due to 2 HDD fallen apart within a week... I didn't have time to go to lowyat to get another hdd due to week days...

the other WD Green failed during weekend... Since after that... all my important data goes to cloud... rather trust cloud...

In a long run for large data like me, it cost more for using cloud. sweat.gif

Remember, RAID is not backups. You need both! Ransomware, fire, flood, theft, brick falling on your NAS will easily convince you that backups are important.

If your data is really valuable to you, then you would pay the money for backups. You can easily categorize your data into tiers, some that don't have to go to the cloud, some that do. Compression/deduplication will also reduce the space required by a huge amount!

One strategy I use to get "cheaper" cloud backup is using Office 365 Home. For ~RM359 per year, you get 6 accounts, 1TB each = 6TB total. You also get some legal copies of Microsoft Office as a bonus  biggrin.gif Compare this to AWS Glacier at ~RM240 per year for 1TB

Also when replacing drives, don't forget to check Backblaze Stats. Basically the most reliable tend to be Hitachi/Toshiba drives, followed by Seagate. WD has some very high failure rates
*
"Ransomware, fire, flood, theft, brick falling on your NAS" -- This all been taking care.

I have been using NAS for over 13yrs. Spoiled 2 NAS. So pretty understand the disaster might coming.

I can't stream media with cloud.

Data is not just me using. It's for whole family, relative around the world. They easily access with a smartphone.

Don't ask me to train those relative aunty/uncle using the cloud. bangwall.gif

The most reliable is those drive that run at 5200rpm. As long as the NAS can stream media at home is fine.
