Your Tern P9 may be giving you some initial problems, but once sorted out will be a speed racer I think...

Anyway, how is the bike's handling compared to your Java ?
Do you feel the handlepost is firmer?

I have offered to buy him a brand new Java and his given to me in exchange. He declined though. Hahahaha. tongue.gif

I think the handle post is a wee bit too long. The clamp acts like a fulcrum when the rider pushes it hard. But under normal riding, it's fine. Only on extreme pushing (like pedalling when standing up, robyn likes to ride this way), does the creaking comes out, also this situation is when the clamping and the fork locked tight. On the serious note, there's no design flaw, only the final quality control before handing over the bike. Things like V-brakes adjustment, tightening of spokes, tightening of all the joints bolts. If this was done, there should be no problem. But because of the price war on that model ( Roadalink has a sale before this and revealing the actual value of the bike, remember), the shops seems to profit less and this makes the shop unwilling to do more on fine tuning the bikes. Hence, the dilly dally and pushing the buck around.

Still, it's never the fault of the buyer though. Between the importer and also the seller, they should buck up! All 3 Tern P9s were doing OK the other day and all 3 also have slight creaking sound when the handle post is pushed hard during riding. It's priced over 2K and this is considered mid level. I think it won't hurt is they allow handlepost length that can be choosen or at least an adjustable one. If this is done, a lanky rider like robyn will adjust it lower and the stress would not be so strong on the joint. Right now, he is using a third party double bar to adjust the handlebar.

Also noted was the Kinetix rims, the rims are not seating the tyres well. Needs a lot of adjustments, releasing the air, tugging and then fill up again and all done again and again and again to let the tires seat evenly and nicely. My guess is Tern are also on the experimenting stage! rclxub.gif You know, trying out factories dishing out the components and frames etc. Better bet is waiting for Dahon to improve and regain their strength! nod.gif Hopefully, next year, they will improve.

PS/ The new Tern P9, bought by robyn's friend in Dengkil who also joined us for ride. His chain jump thrice and he has to stop to put them back on the chain ring proper. I have already instructed him on how to alleviate the problem. 'robyn's' is OK now and another one modded up to double crank and the FD's cage is holding the chain from jumping out! I think once you change the RD to conventional types like Shimanos or SRAMs or even Microshifts, it will also help. Neos are crappy, seriously. rclxub.gif

Exactly my Thoughts too !!.

I think the build quality is there, especially the handlepost clamp and the folding clamp at the frame.
If there is something that is not working well, it can be fixed or replaced.

I took my standard Tern Verge P18 and added on new wheels, brake pads, pedals and saddle... all premium stuff.
I am looking at changing the crankwheel with FD and shifters too now.... the picture seems a bit blurry but the words sram and red seems to be there.....

It can only get better as time goes on.... rclxm9.gif

Sifu etigge, i am thinking to change my p9 neos rd to sram, if i change the crankset to 53-39t and 11-34 cassette, the short cage sram x9 rd can be used? Or need to use the mid size cage rd? I worry the mid size rd will touch the ground easily.

The bash guard of the crank is super duper thin and flimsy. I don't know why, is it cheaper or lighter, I don't know! rclxub.gif When the cranks bolts are bolted onto the crank and chainring, it tightens and the bash guard warps out, creating a gap just right for the chain to get jam in. tongue.gif There's 2 solutions. The chain jumps when you shifts fast and the RD cage jerks the whole chain like flipping a whip and hence the jump. The first solution. The bash guard/chain guard which is supposed to stop the chain jumping out and another chain guard that is screwed onto the seat tube. If you look crefully, the latest chain guards on the Dahon Speed P8 are super large but the chain rings remains at 52T. There's a over height of 15mm, that's why the chainguard looks big. As for the Tern's it's super thin and also quite low to prevent the chain from jumping out and to make it worse the warping makes a gap for the chain to get stuck into. Maybe they used the same diameter guards but Terns are 53T and slightly bigger but they did not take this into consideration. This also sometimes stops the bike suddenly as robyn has experienced! shocking.gif I took the chainguard out and bend the flaps inwards (near the bolt holes) so that when the bolts are tighten, it will offset the warping and leave just a small gap. Oh yes, bashing it with a mallet actually works! tongue.gif but you don't need to as the chainguards are so thin, it can be bent with your fingers!

The other solution is to mod to dual chainring or more. The FD cage will also acts as a chainguard as the chain can't flip beyond the chainrings.

See the size and thickness of the bash/chain guard.

Hmm.... 11T/34T, that's a big cassette. Most probably you need a long cage to accommodate. A mid cage can work but at the last two combination (53T X 30/34T) the jockey wheel of the RD might rub againts the chain. Better to have long cage. I have used Shimano Deore long cage before and although the cage is just an inch plus from the ground and even nearer to the spokes, but it did pose any problem. Only when you hit into a pothole that it will affect it. Probably also bang the RD againts something. But then at this setting, you are probably will be slow as you will be riding up a hill and you won't be doing above 10km/h either so I guess it is safe! nod.gif

the spec of the short sram x9 will state whether it can accommodate a 34t.

for the short tiagra on the dash p18, the max is under 32T, but dahon use it anyway,
so it almost touches the 32t cog, and hits it when u do back pedal, creating a buzzing sound....

Thanks etigge and H2D, for aesthetic and safety reasons, i really feel that the long cage rd is not suited for fb. Will read the x9 manual first.

If my Ugo is giving me problem, i wouldnt be complaining much as i bought it for only Rm750.

But, buying something like 2k, it is pretty upset as you find it is not worth what you paid for.

So i m totally agree with you. It is ok. Lesson learnt.

Wow, after reading the last few pages about Robyn's problematic Tern P9, I'm kinda saddened
being a Tern fan.
I bought a Tern Link D8 about 3 weeks ago and so far nothing has happened to the bike so far.
Maybe the P9s had a bad batch? Still, you would think they had better QC before distributing out the bikes.

Send an email to Josh Hon la and see what he says tongue.gif
