Honestly, I have not used extension tubes before, I've read about them previously when I had a thought of getting one, but ended up didn't.

So to answer your 3-2-1 issue, I'll leave to those who used them before to reply.

But seeing that you can't seem to adjust focus on your lens, it's either powered off and locked at the infinity or MFD point. You'll need to look for a proper MF lens to test it out for yourself.

extra question: did you know what were you buying into when you get the extension tubes? research on it? read up on its functions and limitations etc?
*
Since non-AF is only RM30, I only did some basic research. All I know is that it allows u to focus on the object nearer, no optics inside (hence no loss of image quality) and also a bit of the 3-2-1.

buy a cheap manual lens off eBay for $50. biggrin.gif

Most dumb adapters are more or less the same in construction. I've both a few and went along with Fotga most of the time.

Again, when people ask "what is recommended lenses" , it's best to support this question to what purpose you want it for?

For portrait go with Minolta 58mm 1.4 , sometimes when I want a more creative approach I go Helios 44.
Street I have a Minolta 28mm 2.8
Tele + tele macro - Minolta 135mm 3.5
Macro - Minolta 50mm 3.5 Macro with 1:1 tube

Among my other less used vintage lenses I also have a couple Industar 61, Minolta 50mm 1.7, Vivitar 75-205mm.

It's pretty fun and surprising to go full manual.

My usage is mainly for insect macro shots, maybe some animal(cat/dog type of size) and human portraits. Creamy bokeh is highly preferred too. So I think 50mm f/1.7 is more suitable for me, more of an all-rounder since I can use extension tubes for macro. Then for normal landscape shots I'll use my 16-50 kit lens. What do u think?

Also, a few more questions.
1) What do these Minolta MD / MC / FC mean?
2) How old are these manual lenses? No more in production edi?
3) How's the image quality? On par with modern basic prime lenses?

It's best if you try google those lens names with respect to the adapter that you will need.

2) How old are these manual lenses? No more in production edi?
They're OLD. Some could be 20 odd years, some even more. Some dates back to WWII times.

3) How's the image quality? On par with modern basic prime lenses?
Those on par or some even better than modern lenses will cost you RM10k and above ie. Leica lenses. (But still manual focus)
You get what you pay for basically.

50mm 1.7 is fairly common since it's the "kit lenses" of old. If you just want to test water go ahead,
But... I'd suggest 58mm 1.4. since it's fairly common and reasonably priced. I myself started out with one. It was love at first sight. I've gotten many other vintage since then but it's still one of my favourite. Build like a tank
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Minolta-MC-ROKKOR-...=item4acb654af1

58mm 1.2 is much more expensive

Never heard of FC. MD/MC are mount types. Same structure, just different generation. Just google these stuff up.

Why do you think they're called vintage lenses? I'm just assuming you're talking about Minolta MD/MC. This will give you an idea how old they are.

It has it's own unique attributes. It takes time and experience to know. The coats those days and these days are different. In different temp and lighting, you may get different result with other lenses. Like glare, glow, soft, tint, ca.. . One thing I like about vintage lenses is that they are build to last. Really sturdy and durable.

My first ever photography workshop when I started . This was taken with my Rokkor 58mm 1.4 on a NEX-C3. If you browse through the set, I'd say 90% is shot using the minolta 58mm

Anyone knows where to buy the Sony BC-VW1 quick charger and how much is it? I've asked a few shops and most of them no stock.

In terms of usage, is it user friendly? I have 2 batteries, so sometimes, I want to charge one in the camera and another using this charger. Is it a good buy accessories?

What do you hope to achieve with filters? If you don't know, then you probably don't need it.

A simple search in sony's website would tell you what you need - a telephoto
http://www.sony.com.my/nex-lens/range/Zoom-Lens/567688

You'd probably want the cheapest available which is SEL55210, retail at RM1400.

Or if you want to splurge more and cover a wider range..
SEL18200 - RM3000.

There's also SELP18105G which is around RM1800.

All these things is on the net. Go find out.

Some questions about those vintage lenses.

1) Last time 1 seller told me that if I use non-Sony lenses, it might affect firmware update in the future. True?

2) How manual are these manual lenses? Only thing manual is the manual focus right?

3) Aperture/shutter speed/ISO/HDR and all that can be digitally operated? Can press button on the body and operate it from the screen? Just wanna confirm cuz it's called manual lens.... rclxub.gif

4) While taking pics, can I view it from my electronic viewfinder?

No such thing. How can a manual, non-electronic, non-motorized lens effect your firmware? Even if if's a newer lens from say, Tamrom or Sigma, I don't see how it will effect a NEX's firmware. Unless the seller meant lense's firmware, then each lens have their way of update. The top lenses can plug in, or dock. Sony's SEL can be updated via camera.
But then again, vintage lenses. Where got such thing as firmware then?

Manual focus, and aperture. Sometimes you need to do some manual mod. For example to get the manual aperture ring working on Helios 44m-n.

Huh? blink.gif Minolta MC 58mm f/1.4 and MC 50mm f/3.5 need to do any aperture mod?

Also, can a normal NEX extension tube work with these Minoltas? Do I need a specific extension tube like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/MINOLTA-EXTENSION-...=item27d9f75ed9

It seems that the MC 58mm f/1.4 has a minimum focus distance of 2 ft (60cm), wonder if it's good enough for macro even with extension tubes.

Minolta MD/MC and NEX uses different mounts. You absolutely need a different adapter.
So if you want to use that 1:1 tube, you set-up will be like this
Camera + NEX-MD/MC adapter + 1:1 tube + MD/MC mount lens

I get what you mean by that. I'm more concern on that aperture of the lens. I find the photo quality is quite bad under low light condition with the normal 16 - 50mm kit lens.

Anyone have a recommendation of tripod for NEX6? Firm and retractable, heavy is fine.
Would need to look for a beg that can carry the tripod and a few lenses afterwards.

Digged around for SEL35F18, but no one selling it away it seems. Considering 50mm F1.8 and Sigma 30mm f2.8 instead, which would be more recommended for in door portrait?
*
If it's indoor and cramped space.. the Sigma 30mm. I always had trouble with the 50mm 1.8 indoors because i have to stand quite far away to get a full body shot, and more chance of someone walking in from the sides. Sometimes I have the camera 2 cm from the wall because I could not fit everyone in. Nowadays I would rather swap out 50mm and use the kit lens, stand closer and will mostly fire the bounce flash up to the ceiling for indoors and in rooms.

The 50mm is great for 1/2 body and face proportions are more flattering than the 30, but difficult due to indoor space constrains. the 35 1.8 is the most expensive but should be the best compromise here.

Been living with the free and light digi eye tr-37 for a few years, so far It works. But of course it's not as rigid or robust as the higher quality one's. I often shoot people, so I rarely need a tripod. I don't mind carrying the tripod separately in another sling bag with water bottle n umbrella haha. The sling bags that you get free from joining marathon runs.

But Landscape and macro shooters, better get something more stable and has a hook at the bottom so that you can hang your bag there for added stability.
