Thanks for the update, hopefully your troubles are over.

Just to understand what is the cause:
1) Did the mechanic say why cannot start?
2) Why did he add the condensor, your distributor is a new one, spark plug & cable are ok. Ignition system got some problem?
3) The confusing part is the thick smoke means rich mixture (flooding), but the pancing method is like a choke action.
*
1) The mechanic said there was clogging in the carburetor, maybe because the previous mechanic didn't service it well.
2) He added the condenser to add more 'power' during starting.

condenser? looks more like a grounding cable for the distributor lol

btw,
anyone opened valve/rocker cover? do you need to apply additional sealant gasket in addition to the existing rubber lining/gasket?

Tks for the info, I try to digest it.

I assume the mechanic also re-service the carburettor to clear the clog.

hi guys need some advice here.I must confess I am not very good in car thingy.

My car got some oil leak that I need to change spark plugs every time I go for oil change. So one day while oil change the mechanic says my car got to do top overhaul because suspected valve seal broken and quoted me about RM2000.

Then I go ask another shop near my home in damansara PJ area but the mechanic says its advisable to do full overhaul because top overhaul is not enough and need to change the piston ring as well and need to change the timing belt, water pump and few other things which I have forgotten what is it and the most important thing is he quoted me RM5000.

As you guys know now economy is not so good so I think its best to spend my money wisely thats why I hope you guys can advise me on which package to take or any other suggestion are welcomed and fully appreciated. Thank you in advance.

sifu Quazacolt thank you for your input smile.gif

If I do top overhaul, are they going to change the piston rings as well, is there anything like top overhaul+change piston ring or you need to do full overhaul because top overhaul they are not going to touch the piston ? I am bit confused here.

Anyone happen to know any "honest" mechanic around PJ/Damansara/Sg Buloh area ? Seems that honest mechanics are hard to find nowadays sigh.... sad.gif

not sifu la, just an owner like most of the folks here smile.gif

iinm you can't access the pistons directly without dismantling the engine since you need to open up all the con rods/valves etc.

you know, if it is JUST spark plug area leaking oil, you could probably just replace the valve seals (top overhaul) and be done with it.

my advice is to find 2nd/3rd/4th opinions and their charges on your problem and recommended action to take.
the previous 2 places/mechanics you mentioned are just waiting to chop you. too expensive for their top/full overhaul pricing.

don't think i know mechanics around that area though, sorry sad.gif

Actually this forum still alive thanks to people like yourself who are willing to share experiences with newbies like me and others who are struggling with problems. thumbup.gif

I think a lot of oldtimers already moved on to better cars liao thats why can't see most of them postings here.

sifu/sensei generally same meaning lol

you flatter me, i only able to share what i know/experience notworthy.gif
and yeah, the thread's subtitle is as what you said, many of the oldtimers/real sifu all left/inactive sad.gif

btw if your engine oil leaking isn't too serious, can take the time to hunt for mechanics. can even find those "bawah pokok" places that does a LOT of old saga/iswara taxis and generally they would be a lot more honest.

i'd recommend my mechanic however labor cost over there has risen a LOT since the last time i overhauled my car so i'm not sure how much he's going to charge sad.gif
it was a damn fast job for an engine rebuilt though (about 4 days only compared to others who wanted at least a week)

That engine rebuild includes rebore the cylinders & new pistons? Plus also any other parts like crankshaft/bearings...
How much did it cost?

generally just cleaning, no reboring of cylinders or new pistons needed as the condition looks good.
crankshaft also remained, only replaced bearings.

iinm it costed 2k+ for a full rebuild. didn't even need 3k

old pricing, somemore thread no longer active, but yes, inflation and what not also won't surmount the 2k price he was quoted earlier unless every part had to be replaced - rough estimation, not that many part you can replace with just top overhaul anyways.

then again could be miscommunication between the mechanic as the mechanic could be quoting a HUGE overestimation.

Meter cluster DIY
1) Pry out the push switches (air-con, demister, hazard etc) at the sides, and unplug their sockets
2) Unscrew 4 screws that secures the hood (2 under top, 2 at bottom).
3) Remove the hood.
4) You can see the meter cluster secured by another 4 screws. Remove these screws.
5) The meter cluster is attached to the speedo cable and 2 wiring sockets. Disconnect the 2 wiring sockets.
6) Disconnect the speedo cable by pressing on a clip (I think is white colour)(Below is sample picture illustration of speedo cable clip connection) . You have to stand outside the car and see through the windscreen. This step is a bit tight because of cramped space, but you can push the speedo cable from the engine compartment to allow more access space. After disconnecting speedo cable you can remove the whole cluster.
7) The 3 meters are separated by 2 grooved mounting rails which are covered by tamper-proof stickers on top of the instrument cluster. The rails have a little protrusion or 'feet' for you to pull out - careful not to break it if too much force is applied.
8) Remove the screws around the edge of the circuit boards. The center meter is locked to the other 2 meters by flaps, which you have to manipulate to free the meters.
9) Examine the plastic gears for any broken mechanisms. Try to turn the digits to see if there are foreign objects jamming the teeth.

Finally had some time to try to fix my Iswara speedometer. My odometer and tripmeter is stuck but the speedmeter is still working. Workshop quote me RM180 to replace it but I tried my luck in repairing it myself. Will tell what was the result but before that, this is what I did step by step:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The odometer stuck at 20k+ KM since I bought the car 2nd hand.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Took out all the 4 cables that were connected to the switch which are air cond switch, rear wiper switch, rear windscreen heat plate switch and hazard light switch. It was a bit difficult because of cramped space.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The plastic cover has been removed. Next up is the meter panel.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

That's the speedometer cable. Not sure whether its in good condition. But when I drive the car, it spins.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

This is what it looks like behind the speedometer.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I took out the odometer and trip meter separately. It looks very complicated and fragile so be careful and think twice before you decide to dismantle it. I made the decision to repair myself because I was planning to change the speedometer but decided to try my luck. When you take out the speedmeter needle, please be very careful, the coil that is connected to it looks very fragile.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I examined the gears, noting was broken and there wasn't any wear and tear.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Then I found out that a gear that is connected to the speedometer cable was stuck with some dirt. So I cleaned it and applied some WD 40.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The green gear will move the odometer and also the trip meter. Until now I can't find the problem because all the gears move smoothly when I turn it. I applied some WD 40 to all the gears throughout the process.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Then I found the culprit! It's the white gear which is connected in between the odometer and the trip meter. It seems that for some reason, the white gear could not move the trip meter gear thus it gets stuck and makes the whole thing stuck. So I decide to take out the white gear. It will make the trip meter useless but odometer is more important than trip meter. Better to have 1 working rather than nothing. But the problem is the white gear is difficult to be removed. So I decided to take out the main gear for the trip meter.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

There will be a black gear in the place where I have marked a blue circle. I unscrewed the pin and took it out. So now the trip meter won't be moving. The white gear can now move the odometer.

And the result, the odometer works!! brows.gif

But... the trip meter is not functioning (who needs it when the odometer is working) and I realised that the speedmeter needle is not as steady as before. Its shaking when the speed is below 40 KM/H. I did found out the the reading is slightly lower than before. I did took the meter out and reassemble the needle. Its still shaking but I guess the reading is ok now.

So what's your comment guys? Wana try it out? Or just change a new one? I spend almost 4 hours and it didn't cost me anything biggrin.gif

Thanks biggrin.gif
I hope you can view the photos. I'm interested in DIY since I was young. Sometimes the things that I repair will work and sometimes it will get spoiled tongue.gif But it's an experience and the satisfaction is priceless when the stuff that you repair works again.

As for the speedometer, it's not working 100% but still there is a chance to make the odometer work. Plus we can see how it's built and how it works. So there's hope and owners can save RM150 if the wan to DIY it biggrin.gif

My car has already turned 6 years old & reached 100,000km...
A lot of things needs replacement. Wondering what aftermarket parts are available that have better performance and reliability compared to stock?

1) Cracked Front Windshield
2) Faded Window Tints
3) Central Locking / Door Locks (Not Working)
4) All 4 Shock Absorbers & Springs
5) Exhaust System
6) Intake System

Any recommendations?
