Hi I wanna ask for an advise.

I'm a fresh grad who just started working in local oil and gas contractor company in KL as Operation Engineer. My work rotation is 2 weeks offshore, 1 week off, 1 week office. My job during at the offshore is doing the chemical test and taking care of the operation there. My background study was in mechanical engineering. My total salary every month (basic+offshore allowance) is around rm6-7k. If basic pay alone, mine is rm3+++. Offshore allowance rm200-250 a day.

Here comes the situation,

This morning, I got a call from UMW oil and gas, and they offered me to work as trainee drilling engineer. The pay is lower than my current salary, basic rm2700/month and Im gonna need to sign contract with them for 2 years. I forgot to ask about the offshore allowance, but I heard UMW only pay rm100/day for offshore allowance.

At the first place Im not interested since thinking the offer is lower than my current salary. But during the lunch I talked with my colleagues engineers who got more experience than me, they advise me to take the offer since I can learn a lot at UMW and the drilling job got huge and great prospect in the future.

So I wanna ask opinion from u guys, should I stay in my current company, or go UMW? Please help.

You may check the value of skill for both careers..

As for now, drilling engineering skillset is in demand with high value.. For freshie, I will suggest to take UMW offer..

What are you doing there at UMW??? Only drilling?

DO you have the opportunities to expose process, control and instrumentations?

For me, i try to develop myself in E&I, control automation as well as rotating equipment.

It depends on what you want actually ......

And bear in mind, you are at end user's side right? Are you willing to downgrade to vendor?

1. Operation Engineer~RM ...
2. Drilling Engineer~RM ...

and value of your skillset...

this is a great opportunity for you. If i am not mistaken it is kind of like a fast track program, where u will be trained until u become a driller in around 4-5 years from now. AFter you have become a driller, maybe you would like it and continue working on rig as a driller and getting around usd 10-15 k a month (not with umw of course) with 1 month on & 1 month off rotation.

Hello guys,

I am currently working with one of power plant service companies. My job scope is specifically on Gas Turbine. I am currently bonded for the next few years. I am okay with my job now. the thing is, I am influenced by the fact that the drilling can offer much more better salary and brighter future. So I need taiko here to advice me, whether I should just stay in my current company and develop myself as rotating engineer, or jumpship, and become driller. Is it worth to switch my direction now and pay the bond (its quite a lot)?

Thanks

Hi guys,

I'm currently with Shell under Professional Manpower Umbrella Contract (Apparently, this contract is reviewed by PMU)

How reliable is this contract ? What is the likelihood of getting absorbed into Shell as a permanent staff?

Years of experience : Almost 2 , As per my experience, is it advisable to apply directly to Shell or wait till get absorbed?

Please advise guys.

Hello.. I'm pretty sure that you guys have had this question asked many times but I would really appreciate a feedback.. I'm a female mechanical engineering final year student and will be finishing in June. My CGPA is just over 3.0. I have been interested in oil and gas industry for the longest time. Just want to know what are my chances of getting into OnG industry? Do I start applying now? Which companies accept fresh graduates? I don't mind being based anywhere in Malaysia.
