Totally agree with the 'high mobility means low performance' terms  nod.gif I not sure about using external GPU with low-powered laptop tho. For desktop PC, there's plenty of room to grow, but you have to see how much ur wallet grow 1st  biggrin.gif
*
hehe for those equipped with thunderbolt i think they can provide enough cpu power.

true, desktop is more fun to play with. if you have deep pockets there are even more fun biggrin.gif

QUOTE(holloway @ Jun 26 2013, 12:23 PM)
yeah thats what my point exactly.. thunderbolt has only around 30GB/s bus speed whilst pci-e 2.0 around 128Gb/s and pci-e 3.0 doubles that~ or around that.. but for laptop having a egpu means a solution for Asus also.since they really like to solder the GPU and CPU..

and speaking about mobile computing straight brings me to . limited ram, low TDP to save battery life and of course sucky gpu. those 11 inchers 13 inchers~ lol
tell me about it coz my next laptop isn't gonna be worth around 4k instead i might go as far as 7k or 8k.. i seriously think if i need raw power going for desktop rig would be more cheaper compared to buying a laptop .. try comparing a 4k laptop vs a 4k desktop biggrin.gif..

and a laptop is a one time bomb...whilst a desktop u can add here and there according to ur finance biggrin.gif
*
exactly biggrin.gif

i got the g55 because it had enough juice to meet my needs and can ease my itches (self upgrades): it's for mobility; it's cool and quiet; and have enough ram slots (and it allowed cpu upgrades). along the way until it dies, i wish to dissect and add more juice to it (hence, my g55 today). i didn't bother about gpu because i don't game much (but i wish to have the chance to switch).

everyone wanna have the 'best'; but we all know that title can only last for a few months, looking at the rate of how manufacturers release their new stuff these days. although it's good to ease my itches, i sometimes think asus might be right in someway in terms of producing units of soldered cpu / gpu. BUT, the first thing they should do is to solder a high-end cpu / gpu if they wanna keep the name of 'gaming laptops' and premium price tags.

by the way, i am well aware of potential issues of self upgrades, like bad battery life. again, that depends on how you plan your upgrades. for instance, with all my current upgrades (3 ssd's, 3820qm cpu, and 32gb ram), i still can use my laptop for 2 hours (high performance power profile) with battery only. i don't need to have more than that period of battery life.

@tonberry_ax is right, the better way to ease my itches is to get a desktop biggrin.gif

haha.. just buy from outside la~
*
Ya plan to do just that if no other option :/

The kingston 1.35v reported as stock ram are hard to find here. Maybe will dig deeper to see if crucial ram is sold here.

QUOTE(holloway @ Jun 26 2013, 09:58 PM)
very interesting.. and really shows when graphic needs more juice, AMD apu just bottlenecks instead of helping smile.gif..
*
Yes smile.gif

QUOTE(mansooriqbal @ Jun 26 2013, 10:08 PM)
which is why AMD processor with a AMD 7970M is dirt cheap. To be honest, not worth more than 2kRM for that. smile.gif
*
Agreed :/ it's a pity but msi is the only one which offer this to cover this part of market share.

before you do anything, back up all data from your partitions in the laptop. it's tedious but it's better safe than sorry.

if you didn't mess with the default partitions (meaning, you are using stock w7/w8 that comes with the laptop; never upgraded before), you should be able to call out asus f9 recovery to restore the OS partition. just press f9 on boot.

after that, you can create a set of dvd recovery dvd's for future use.

if you're talking about clean install, then just use a w7/8 install media and during the setup part format your c: partition, before proceeding to install windows.

there are many tutorials out there, if you're in doubt.

from the ama session with asus reps, the way they responded were funny; it's like skipping most questions about BGA, soldered cpu, and custom gpu. damn.

i guess we all realized this long time already but most of the times we still cannot help it but to get one hoping it will work for us smile.gif

i just wait for reviews~ lol.. and ivy bridge e is coming out.. hmm.. im so lazy to read more about it tho~

i should put a comma after 92c.. when gaming i mean  biggrin.gif

I had had enough of this.. i confirm moving back to desktop next year biggrin.gif or this fall before the release of BF4 biggrin.gif
*
really; hoping a laptop to act as a desktop replacement is plain wrong. it's marketing jargon bullsh!t smile.gif in the name of mobility and convenience, these marketing people are brain-washing us, making us believe that there is such a dream machine. (ya la if you run w98 sure power; but who use w98 now?)

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jun 28 2013, 11:47 AM)
haha, if no use for do presentation i also wont buy laptop. Use desktop i play bf3 5 hour non stop also no problem...

But this laptop.... kaneh..... doh.gif
*
true smile.gif i also kan until no energy already.

it's just a laptop, meant for mobility. such constraints as compact design, limited cooling and power are already making it hard to replace a desktop.

apple mba is really power this season. one mba already take up 56% market share in the US (same category as ultrabooks).

the difference between the previous version and the new one is just minor changes.

anyone here tried clean the fan before??
*
yeah some of us do that.

if you're not experienced in tearing down the laptop, it's a time-consuming task (you need to do that to get to the fans and expose the fins).

it's better to send it in to asus service center for service.

arghh..that will be hard for 1st timer...will the service center worker help me to teardown and clean it?? hmm.gif
because recently i notice the temperature is around 80++ when i play Grid2. i nvr see it over 80 previously.
*
it's actually not hard. it's just tedious. the reason i suggested you to go for asus sc because of the warranty sticker on one of the screws that secure the cpu. damaging that sticker means warranty void.

they will help you. it's part of the service under warranty.

ok thanks bro...no idea which thermal paste to choose, any good 1 to recommend? icon_question.gif

from my limited experience and tests,

1) for cpu: tuniq tx-4, artic silver 5, or ic diamond. tuniq tx-4 is the easiest to apply because it spreads easily, and has no curing time. note that arctic silver 5 has a long curing time (up to 200 hours); to apply this one it's better you dip the tube into hot water for some time before you apply it. for ic diamond, it has curing time of 2 hours.

2) for gpu: although those 3 can be used for gpu, i use prolimatech pk3 instead.

for gpu, do the dot method; for cpu, you need to do a 'rice' method (although AS5 asked us to do spread method but a rice method actually works too).
