For entry level g series notebook only have one fan, with 15" inch screen. Because asus still provide optical drive which other brand dont.

But dont worry, the fan is big enough and very rare type(quality?)compare to others which enough to cool your notebook.

Latest g551 series have bundle for mouse and headset, so dont fool by seller these are limited offer or whatever shxt.
I heard frixfox or whatever have g551 for Rm3399, but limited time offer for gift like stock headset and mouse. I called asus, these are provided all the time when u buy g551. So be careful of all the bullshit or they might again fool us and steal that fking expensive gift from u. Lol...

oh they have changed the fan numbers for 15" (g55 is a 15" entry-level and it has 2 separate fans. i think because of the slim size that they have to take out the other fan). it's good they still provide dvdrom drive (even if i don't use the drive anymore, it's good to know that because that's where i will put a hdd caddy to hold another ssd/hdd. this is a hidden advantage of g-series to me, in the case of g55 it's just 3 screws away to complete the replacement)

about those gifts, they are still practicing that? when i got my g55, i met a good seller. i had everything in the box. (i had no clue that there were extra gifts actually. it's rare to see a sincere seller these days, so my friends and i decided to get a few more units from him later on hehe)

it's a bigger brown box, not the one that houses the laptop.

edit: sorry for posting too quick lol!

for new models, actually i think they should maintain the dual-fan configuration. (and make a usb-based dvdrom as a gift) the replacement hdd caddy is just my preference, not really a big deal. (i just like to have the chance to make laptops i own to fit my needs)

well it is what it is.

the official rog g551 upgrade guide, http://rog.asus.com/376092014/g-series-gam...-upgrade-guide/

(now you can replace the wifi card biggrin.gif)

from the pictures found online for g551, it's better to check the msata slot if you wanna add msata ssd later (maybe this requires a full teardown, maybe not). it looks like g551 only fits for a half-size instead of the common full-size msata ssd. (and that's kind of rare, and the ssd size is limited due to that form factor)

the official g751 upgrade guide, http://rog.asus.com/375732014/g-series-gam...-upgrade-guide/

for g751, the battery is now non-removable. the good news is, it's free from optimus. all of the variants. imo that's the right choice, because gamers don't care about battery life, they just plug and play.

it's a smart way to house the pcie ssd. (looks cheap but effective) apparently they are aware of the overheating issue of m.2 pci-e ssd, and turn the m.2 caddy into heat-spreading heatink (with two thermal pads).

however you need to carefully plan your purchase, if you don't wanna disassemble these machines. (e.g. m.2 caddy will not be available officially if you don't get the variant with m.2 ssd; if you wanna have 32gb ram in future, get the model with 2x8gb ram)

But the design from G550 to G551 changed a bit.  sweat.gif

a single fan config is kind of sad actually. even my xps has 2 fans :/ (my xps has no ODD and ethernet port)

G551 don't have m.2 so PCI-E > m.2?? if i getting G551 i don't like hdd with 5400rpm.. my 4 yrs old lappy using momentus 7200rpm which i plan to use as my storage by using enclosure usb 3.0 or act as my primary drive.. ram i prefer 8gb so that can add another 8gb for max 16gb support. don't wish too spent so much on computer.. too bad asus don't offer free dos. if ram still able to upgrade but slightly expensive since asus charge more. while once i really decide what to buy then i will ask asus for quotation.

g551 is all sata, no pci-e. (m.2 is just a form factor, which has more than one length. there are sata version of m.2 ssd, too. don't get the wrong one because they are incompatible) the pci-e m.2 slot in asus g751 is pci-e x4, that's fine because with uefi bios you can run os on it, too. the current best pci-e m.2 ssd is samsung xp941. (this is what you can find in asus g751 if you opted to get one with pci-e ssd config. expensive stuff currently)

my 128gb variant is the boot drive in my desktop that can run 900MB/s reads.

when i checked the pictures, asus decided to use samsung ram as well. another good part for laptops.

i'm not sure if asus can cater for custom orders :/

They don't cater custom order for Malaysia. Only for US usually, but GenTechPC hasn't have G551 hands on yet. I guess Malaysia is lucky to have stock that quick.

yeah. it's like a trend on how asus populates their products. i remembered two years back when i was supposed to get a g75vw but in the local market there were only g55. a few months later, we had g75vx instead.

I went to shop to order been told G56JR is the current model but then here i saw someone posted G551JM. and the price i saw online in mudah is rm3289. But in the shop i ordered G56JR the price they mentioned was rm4099. And i checked under laptop price here in lowyat price list, its d same.

Kinda confused now g551JM is newer then G56JR?

yes. the better way to find out which one is the latest (or upcoming) is to visit the asus website. (there is also a pdf version of product guide that can be downloaded from there. however normally the product guide is kind of lagging behind)

this is because they are online sellers. they have relatively less overheads than normal retail shops.

.. and retail shops normally need to clear old stocks first before they get to release new ones.
