Hey guys, just got my G53Jw back from my bro since he decided to switch to something more portable.

The keyboard backlit wasn't working so i reinstalled the ATK package from asus website. Still wasn't working so I decided to do a fresh install of windows since it needed a reformat (too much useless software he install)

I've finished the installation + all drivers from asus website.

Backlit still not working for the keyboard, just the keyboard. The lights for the 3 buttons and the indicator lights still working.

Any ideas? driver issue or is the backlit just dead?

Okay nevermind, turns out last time warranty to replace keyboard, they replace the backlit keyboard with a wonderful non-backlit one... zzz wonderful asus. last time it was replacing my bluray drive with a regular dvd drive and the technician insisted that he replaced it with a bluray drive... wonderful.... zzz.... zzz... wonderful....

Very epic! haha how we love asus service center. At the end of the day, it's like they are trying to humor us? haha. let us laugh and sh*ts. Well this is not their first time. I guess they have too many laptops sold around malaysia and techinicians are being paid too low? Til their service is like this. Maybe if they are being paid a bit higher, atleast the management can Fire them away when customers complains~ lol

Ask them to repaste or repaste them yourself. CPU temp too high, it's not healthy for the laptop~ smile.gif

Hey guys, I have my G53SX with me for almost 2 years already.. But recently 4-5 months back I got curious and started doing some small disassembling  sweat.gif and i think during one of the process I might have yanked the display cable a little too hard, and when I switch it back on the display wasn't working.

I've been using an external monitor ever since until last week I decided to disassemble again to double check and make sure everything was connected, but there wasn't any difference. Without my ext monitor plugged in, I looked to my screen at a certain angle, and noticed that there were some images. I could see my bootscreen and my cursor in the laptop screen when i put a bright light on it, just that it was very very dim. Safe to say the conclusion was that the backlit cable of the screen got loose or maybe spoiled, but the screen is still fine as its visible. So maybe only need replacement of the cable..

My question here is, where can I get it fixed? I don't think warranty covers this as I've probably disassembled too far inside.  sweat.gif  Thanks guys  smile.gif
*
You still have warranty on it? but even though there's no warranty you could always go to the SC with a cost of course smile.gif

I'm not so sure what happen, i'll try to read around to see what happens

Ask them fix 1 part break another part. World class service eh?  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

You can trust both holloway and horns, they know everything about Asus G-series from software till hardware better than any of the Asus technician in malaysia.  nod.gif

eh i also have a pic like that but that's me disassembling my previous laptop.. wait ah i go find it first hahaha.. i wanna show also~

lol no a no a.. those SC knows alot better compared to me still. It just happen that i open up my g55 =.=" and accidentally learn something from it~ haha. And my knowledge is limited to G55VW only (same like sifu horns)

Not sure. I expect it to be void already.. I don't mind a small cost since its just the cable that needs to be adjusted/replaced.. Is the SC that i need to go to located at LowYat Plaza? And do I need to make any preparations before going there?
*
Remind them again and again and again not to format your laptop if you have precious documents. To be safe backup all hard drive they tend to format even C D E or every single partition u have. Or to be exact whole HDD~ lol. and yep thats the one located at LYP smile.gif. might not be so small cost.

p/s: do ask them to order first then only call you when the item arrive if they don't have stock. if possible don't ever leave your laptop there. smile.gif my 2 cents lo

It for sodimm? Where can i get that ram?
*
SO-DIMM is usually for laptops. Well to not confuse u it's laptop ram~ it's just smaller form factor thus the SO infront of the DIMM lol. well any computer shop smile.gif depends on what type do u need, what speed, what size smile.gif and the pricing (which is quite high atm)

Looking performance ram for laptop.. But must ddr3l volt 1.35. Hv any brand release ram for that?
*
Mostly haswell release or newer generation are using DDR3-L which means it's not the previous DDR3 with 1.5V but instead 1.35V. And of course almost all company that produce rams have already produced rams for 1.35V

edit: i just saw horns gave you enough info on that smile.gif just wondering why do you need performance ram? it's costly compared to normal ram and doesn't give you much or have that any difference unless you are OC enthusiasts or work around RAM most of the time. If it's for gaming only it won't be worth, save it for something else drool.gif

*
It will improve alot! biggrin.gif it's one of the things you will want to have in your gaming laptop.

horns again have list out for you the best option of SSD smile.gif

Upgrade RAM (just take the normal ram) saves alot RM200(approx) 8gb per piece (make sure you take known brands such as kingston, crucial, mushkin etc etc).

SSD might be around MYR400 - MYR1000 ++++ depends on size

One more thing.. If any user here problem with network card qualcomm atheros . Wifi always disconnect. Happen when suft at kopitiam or any place hv wifi..always disconnect..not stable..
*
does it occur at home? usually when at kopitiam or starbucks or mcd will have frequent disconnect since there are too many people trying to connect at the same time (congested~ thus like road will accident~)

If you still have this at home alone or nobody connected to that same wifi and still disconnect do try to update your driver to the latest version, or downgrade depends on which is stable smile.gif . Other than that do check your anti-virus (internet security) sometimes they tend to mess with the connection (firewall option bla3)

If still happen also, go get new wifi card biggrin.gif it's affordable (get the one with .ac option~)

if we change wifi card.. How about warranty? Void?
*
it depends if you ask SC to do it. No warranty won't void (usually) or if you do it yourself (by not tearing of the void sticker) won't void your warranty as well. Just remember to switch back to the original card just case when going to SC

p/s: warranty sticker for G55 is located at one of the screws to GPU/CPU. Not sure on G750 smile.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Dec 13 2013, 05:34 PM)
technically, touching any part of the non-user serviceable area means warranty voided. the wifi card happens to be located under the keyboard (part of the non-user serviceable area). the user serviceable area is where you can add/replace ram (2 slots; the other two is under the keyboard), hdd (2 bays), and dvdrom.

however, if our previous experience still holds true, asus is kind of liberal in the warranty. the only part that has the yellow warranty sticker is the cpu. if you're careful enough and doesn't break anything during the process, asus still honors the warranty. (normally others will keep the stock parts. when something happen, put the stock parts back in and send the laptop to the service center)

edit: i'm slow biggrin.gif holloway already answered this lol!
*
albeit yours is more thorough and more accurate! haha. i just went on mumbling some words~ no wonder if i'm to write a review it won't win me anything~ unlike u (plextor~)

QUOTE(holloway @ Jun 13 2013, 04:42 AM)
Thanks to horns for this Guide

1. Checking CPU/GPU temperature is essential, but it’s better to test it on games (have fun) instead of doing synthetic test (gpu/cpu benchmark). Take your own sweet time (within the 7 days grace period) and if something went amiss get one-to-one exchange from where you bought it.

2. Check all the common hardware parts that is being used normally (i.e. screens for dead pixel, speakers, keyboard keys, touch pad, rog button, card reads, keyboard backlit, fn keys, usb ports, hdmi/vga/mini display port, wifi and lan, headphone jack, dvd/blu-ray rom etc.) Do check the system info/hwinfo to see whether the specs are exactly as what you are paying for. Other than that run ram test (memtest86+); run it overnight and check results when you wake up in the morning

3. Bios, if there’s nothing wrong with it leave it running stock (there’s no need for an upgrade)

4. Update drivers as updates are usually meant for good things (most of the times) especially Graphic driver as it will support latest games.
5. Getting SSD? Perform clean install is recommended as it has lower chances of heading towards sleepless nights trying to fix. For win8 run disk optimization to trim drives, perform restart, turn of display and leave it til morning this is for system-wide SSD optimization (only after clean

If anyone wants to add or saw any misleading guide do let me know smile.gif together we will fix it towards perfection and beyond!

Err guys, any recommended thermal compound/paste? I want to replace it on my Asus G74SX and... is there any shops that will help you to do it around Sunway/Subang/PJ? yawn.gif or have ANY of you guys did it before?
*
I'm using IC diamond thermal compound

horns and tonberry_ax is using arctic silver 5 (if im not mistaken) but i think horns is using different thermal compound for each gpu & cpu

I think few shops should be able to do it for you but!

random shops/computer shop (they might void your warranty or if they messed up no warranty usually la but of course they should know what they are doing)

doing it yourself (steady hands and patience is the key to success~) several of us have actually done it ourselves (to our G55 that is)

sending it to service center at lowyat plaza is the safest still, They should be able to do it with ease

QUOTE(horns @ Dec 16 2013, 06:12 PM)
yeah some of us did it to our g55. any TIM that can be found in the local market will be fine (like mx-4). there is no need to get expensive ones. after tests with various TIM (tuniq tx-4, as5, ic diamond, prolimatech pk-2/3, etc.), imo it's safe to conclude that TIM is not magic. we have a laptop; not a desktop. the heatsinks in our laptop are not as efficient as desktop's. even if the TIM has very good heat conductive nature, the heatsinks are not efficient enough to dissipate heat.
the last time i did it to my g55 is prolimatech pk-2 for gpu, and pk-3 for cpu haha!

i just replaced the paste for my r4 last weekend (using tuniq tx-4; cpu only). it's reaching 99c lately; now it's about 85c. as for my gpu, i never replaced it. it's 67c playing bf4. (all at room temperature)
*
i thought u did have arctic and tested it before? lol.

Yes holloway, i did use as5 for quite a while before switching to ic diamond, and finally pk-3. (Each cleanup uses different pastes). The application of as5 and pk-3 are slightly different because you have to dip the tube in hot water for a while (the paste is too thick; hard to spread).
*
so far which is the best? coz i'm still using ic diamond. and recently i wanted to repaste, halfway disassembling my g55 then i remember to check if i did bring back from sabah. Couldn't find it anywhere, call home and walla! it's in my room =.=" such a waste.

QUOTE(horns @ Dec 17 2013, 09:00 AM)
since the key idea of thermal cooling is to maintain a minimal gap between normal temperature and max temperature (imo for laptops that gap is about 30 to 40c normally). the bad news is that g55 has a puny cpu/gpu heat sinks (still, gpu heat sink is much better), the efficiency of heat dissipation is relatively lower than machines like r4. also, dust is a major contributor to the gap.

that being said, my preferences are pk-3, as5, and ic diamond. there is no 'the best' to me. all can maintain 73c to 76c max for gpu.

what i concern more is cpu. the puny cpu heat sink simply cannot cope with heat from higher-end cpu's. whatever you put in is useless :/ (long hour gaming with a 3820qm will lead to over 100c max for cpu biggrin.gif). however, for work purposes, 3820qm never gets overheated for g55.
*
Smaller gap is better true true. But yeah i guess that 15" limitation when compared to r4's can be seen. Well had to clean up those dust unless someone that lives in aircond room most of the time dust accumulate is not a big deal (over long period but quite long i guess)

Well i guess those 3 are the best then tongue.gif,

Well atleast for the stock cpu it still can maintain below 100C even gaming, but since you upgraded yours i guess thats why they didn't bundle g55 with higher end cpu's they know the limitation of the puny heat sink~ haha.

those usually fall in the upper range in comparison charts. however for the hardcore and skilled, they might use a few others (like liquid ultra/pro, phobya hegrease, and indigo xtreme). good pastes should bring down the temperatures by a few degrees (hence shifting the range/gap to lower range, normally. however thermal paste is not the major contributor in cooling system as a whole).

yes for stock cpu it is totally fine. proper maintenance should keep the stock system in good shape for years.
*
I wanted to try indigo xtreme in the near future.. Just need to get the paste. U saw any trusted seller selling one?

No so far i know no one carry this one locally but you can get it from frozencpu smile.gif
*
I believe the paste is in a sealed contained pack or whatever it's called. Not sure really~ haha. I've only read and see pictures of it haven't really seen the video. I was contemplating of either getting the IC diamond or indigo way back on my old laptop~ lol but then couldn't find any indigo so i left that train of thought and opt for IC diamond~ well if i fail i still have extra IC diamond around~ haha. hm.. it's up to you. make sure you have done enough research.

turning the laptop on without fan to heat the metal alloy up so that it can melt and undergo 'reflow' process is kind of dangerous. (some already reported that the above caused bad things to the mobo; and i am not that sure if the pressure of a laptop heatsink is sufficient to spread it nicely)

also, check if there is a package that allows you to do it to the mobile cpu. most packages that i found are for desktop cpu's.

indigo xtreme is adhesive so make sure get the cleaner/remover too.

good luck.

Feel like getting Illegear in the future. Wondering bout the cooling / how easy it is to clean in comparison with Asus Gseries. RS-17 looks plain but dayumm...

okay maybe not. Price is enough to get a Kawa bike haha
*
Well illegear are meant for users to customize. Heard it was easy to clean it compared to any asus gaming series (excluding G75) or maybe another series i might not be aware of~ but of all the latest version, it's getting trickier and trickier~ lol!

but yeah Rs-17 is damn expensive~ lol. Depends on what you might need, the RS-15 could be sufficient smile.gif and is affordable~ well yeah compared to AW
