MNLF, Sulu sultanate fighters engage in guerrilla warfare in Sabah
By Mike Frialde, The Philippine Star
Posted at 05/23/2013 8:24 AM | Updated as of 05/23/2013 8:24 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Almost 1,161 fighters of the Sultanate of Sulu and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) are now engaged in guerrilla warfare against Malaysian security forces in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

Abraham Idjirani, sultanate spokesman, said the royal security force under Agbimuddin Kiram were ordered to remain in a defensive posture until the unilateral ceasefire that the Sultanate of Sulu has declared is lifted.

“They are now employing guerrilla tactics,” he said. “They are not on the run as the Malaysian forces are not pursuing them. There is now a lull in the fighting.”

Idjirani said the date of the lifting of the ceasefire will be set after a meeting between the sultanate’s council of shariffs and top commanders of the MNLF in Zamboanga City today.

Hajib Mujaha Hashim, MNLF Islamic Command Council chairman, will chair the meeting, he added.

Idjirani said the fighters are on ceasefire mode following the call of the United Nations for sobriety.

Malaysian forces are also not making any moves against them, he added.

Idjirani said the Sultanate of Sulu is prepared to talk with the Malaysians based on the call of the UN.

“We are assuring the Filipino people that we are not initiating any moves against the Malaysian forces,” he said.

11 dead, 19 injured as military, Abu Sayyaf clash in Sulu Mindanao

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—At least seven Marines and four Abu Sayyaf extremists have
been killed in a clash amid an offensive against al-Qaida-linked gunmen accused of carrying out
recent kidnappings in Mindanao, a military official said.

Military spokesman Brigadier General Domingo Tutaan said nine other Marines and about 10 Abu
Sayyaf fighters were wounded in the gun battle Saturday in Tugas village in Sulu province’s coastal
town of Patikul. Reinforcement troops, including policemen, were hunting down the gunmen in the jungle.

Lieutenant General Rey Ardo, Western Mindanao Command chief, said the firefight that started at
6:45 a.m. Saturday was continuing.

The son of Abu Sayyaf leader Adzmar Sawadjali was among those killed in the firefight, said Ardo.

Ardo said Marine soldiers battling the Islamic extremists were now being reinforced by artillery and air craft.

The Abu Sayyaf is holding Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani whom they took in Sulu where he
was on a coverage in June 2012.

what happen to the thais aircraft carrier mind to share?

for me dokdo class, rmn should only look at it when we have enough budget to buy it. But currently we are lacking army transport type of ship and operational frigate

the thais bought it at the worse time, just b4 98 crisis. except for some occasional humanitarian work, the carrier only leaves the dockyard once/mth.

From wiki:
QUOTE

Chakri Naruebet is usually only operational for a single day per month for training, with the rest of the time spent alongside as a "part-time tourist attraction". The ship rarely leaves the proximity of the Sattahip naval base, and when she does, it is usually to transport and host the Royal Family of Thailand. Naval commentators consider Chakri Naruebet to be less an aircraft carrier and more the world's most expensive royal yacht, while the Thai media have nicknamed the ship "Thai-tanic", and consider her to be a white elephant. The only operation she did is for flood relief.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTMS_Chakri_Naruebet
At 11.000 tons it is the smallest aircraft carrier in the world. It is basically a smaller version of her half sister the Spanish carrier Principe de Asturias. It was bought secondhand from the Spanish Navy in 1997. and came with seven AV-8S and two TAV-8S Matador (Harrier) STOL attack aircraft. Six new-build S-70B-7 Seahawk helicopters are also on board. The Matador AV-8S (first generation Harrier airframes) are out of service due to lack of spares since 2006.

At the time of ordering Thailand was an "Asian Tiger" , then the Asian Financial Crisis hit and all of a sudden they couldn't afford to operate what they had already ordered.

Chakri Naruebet with Kitty Hawk

It’s still operational but hardly goes to sea as it is costly to do so. So now the intended naval 'force-multiplier' has become sort of just the Royal Thai yacht (there are apartments for the Thai royal family)…and part-time tourist attraction ( don’t miss buying a cap with HTMS Chakri Nabuet on it). The officers' uniforms make the aircraft carrier more colourful. They don red, yellow, green, purple and white uniforms.

It saw action in January 2003, when anti-Thai riots were sparked in Phnom Penh by incorrect news reports of a claim by a Thai actress that the Angkor Wat temple complex belonged to Thailand, not Cambodia. Chakri Naruebet was sent to help with any evacuation of Thai citizens from Cambodia.

Another time it saw action was during the filming of Rescue Dawn, about US Navy pilot Dieter Dengler and his capture during the Vietnam War, the flight deck of CHAKRI NARUEBET was used to represent the carrier USS RANGER.

But in any real action it will be any naval commander’s wet dream target ship. The self-defense armament includes four close defense Meroka systems and six chaff decoy launchers. For offensive weapons, the ship relies on the capabilities of her embarked aircraft. For anti-submarine defense, she relies upon the detection capacity and attacks of her ASW helicopters.

VERA passive radiolocator (in Czech known as Věra) is an electronic support measures (ESM) system that uses measurements of time difference of arrival (TDOA) of pulses at three or four sites to accurately detect and track airborne emitters. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to in the media as a radar.
