India and China withdraw troops from Himalayan face off
By Fayaz Bukhari and Satarupa Bhattacharjya ![]() SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI, Indian (Reuters) - India and China simultaneously withdrew troops from camps a few meters apart in a Himalayan desert on Sunday, apparently ending a three-week standoff on a freezing plateau where the border is disputed and the Asian giants fought a war 50 years ago. The two sides stood down after reaching an agreement during a meeting between border commanders, an Indian army official told Reuters, after the tension threatened to overshadow a planned visit by India's foreign minister to Beijing on Thursday. But it was not immediately clear how far China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers had withdrawn - Delhi had claimed they were 19 km (12 miles) beyond the point it understands to be the border with China, a vaguely defined de facto line called the Line of Actual Control, which neither side agrees on. Defence and foreign ministry spokesmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "Our troops have moved one kilometre backwards from the position they were on since April 16," said the officer, from the Indian army's Northern Command, which oversees the disputed region on the fringes of India's Jammu and Kashmir state. "Chinese troops have also moved away from their position they were holding on since April 15 when they intruded in Indian territory. It is not clear yet how (far) the PLA moved back." India considered it the worst border incursion for years. |

Spectators watch in horror as plane plunges to ground at Spanish air show
![]() The pilot was reportedly killed Sunday when a vintage plane crashed near Madrid. Warning: Some viewers may find this footage disturbing. Spectators at a Spanish air show looked on in horror as a historic jet fell from the sky and exploded into a giant fireball on Sunday. A spokesman for Spain's Defense Ministry said pilot Ladislao Tejedor Romero died of his injuries after being transported to the series burns unit of Getafe hospital. Romero, 35, was an experienced pilot who also served as assistant to Defense Minister Pedro Morenes. The aircraft crashed into a hangar and exploded in front of nearly 3,000 people gathered at Cuatro Vientos airfield just southwest of Madrid to see vintage aircrafts and aerial acrobatics. One of the spectators caught the crash on film. Romero was flying a 1950s-era HA-200 Saeta, one of the first jet propelled planes to be manufactured in Spain. Ministry spokesman Alfredo Florenza said the cause of the crash is unknown. ![]() HA-200 Saeta The pilot is believed to be the only fatality, but Europa Press news agency reports many others were taken to the hospital for injuries related to the crash. A young woman who suffered first and second degree burns was taken to a local hospital, as was a 57-year-old man who suffered an anxiety attack. Another rescue worker suffered from smoke inhalation and received aid at the scene, the new agency reported. |

QUOTE(ayanami_tard @ May 6 2013, 08:30 AM) http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-05-03/indo...y-power/4666748 Although there is a low-profile arms race in south east asia, this is actually like announcing it's on bebeh~Indonesian president vows to outgun Australia Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says his country should strive to have a more powerful military than Australia. About 16,000 Indonesian troops are preparing for joint military exercises in East Java. Meeting with military commanders, Mr Yudhoyono told them that Indonesia's military should be bigger and more modern than countries like Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia's military boasts 470,000 active troops, while the Australian Defence Force has just over 80,000 full-time personnel and reservists.. It has also embarked on a military upgrade program, building warships and drones, as well buying fighter jets, helicopters and rockets. ..................... p/s: any indon members can id the missile at the background. terima kaseh |

The U.S. Army's New 84-Ton Tank Prototype Is Nearly IED-Proof
The new Ground Combat Vehicle weighs twice as much as the tank it's designed to replace, and it's massive enough to survive a roadside bomb. ![]() The Ground Combat Vehicle U.S. Army Heavy does not even begin to describe the U.S. Army's new tank. At 84 tons, the Ground Combat Vehicle prototype weighs more than twice as much as its predecessor, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The Bradley is designed to carry a six-man squad (and three-man driving crew) into combat, while the GCV will carry a larger, nine-man squad. Both vehicles will provide covering fire and damage enemy tanks. But the military has built the new GCV to withstand a kind of threat that didn't exist when the Bradley was deployed in the early 1980s: improvised explosive devices. Part of logic behind the new tank's massive size is that soldiers inside a vehicle are more likely to survive an explosion if there's adequate space for them to wear armor while seated. The extra space also helps distribute pressure from the blast and thus lessens its impact. Another reason the GCV is so huge is that it's required to carry a larger gun than the Bradley does; the new tank will hold a 30mm cannon, probably the 344-pound Mk44 Bushmaster II. Finally, the GCV's extra weight means it will need to be manufactured from the start with a more powerful engine. (By contrast, the Bradley got heavier as the Army added armor to it in Iraq, and its original engine wasn't powerful enough to support the extra weight.) The Ground Combat Vehicle is pretty much the opposite of the original plan to replace the Bradley. A high-concept proposal called Future Combat Systems aimed to make all U.S. Army vehicles lighter. But during the long ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (in which IEDs were the top cause of fatalities), it became clear clear that heavier, not lighter, was the better vehicle design. The U.S. canceled the Future Combat Systems program, and work on the GCV began in 2009. The Pentagon is scheduled to award the first contract to manufacture GCVs in 2019. |

Philippine Navy denies Taiwan shooting
![]() MANILA: The Philippine Navy on Friday denied allegations that its forces had shot dead a crewman of a Taiwan fishing vessel, saying none of its ships were in the area at the time of the apparent incident. “The Philippine Navy denies any involvement in an incident where a Taiwanese fisherman was reportedly shot and the wound led to his death,” the statement said. The naval commander in the area said his ships were in port or very close to the Philippine coast at the time, the statement added. A spokesman for the Philippine coast guard, which is a separate service from the Philippine Navy, could not be contacted for comment. Asked about the report, Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said: “We cannot confirm it. We will check that”. Taiwan’s foreign ministry said that a Taiwanese fishing vessel carrying three Taiwanese and one Indonesian crewman was fired upon early Thursday by a “Philippine government boat”. The incident, some 164 nautical miles off the southernmost tip of Taiwan, left one of the Taiwan crewmen dead. The ministry did not specify what type of government boat allegedly fired upon the vessel, while Taiwan’s coast guard said it was trying to verify reports that it was a Philippine Navy vessel. The Philippines and Taiwan, along with Brunei, China and Malaysia, have conflicting claims to parts of the South China Sea. China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since the end of a civil war in 1949, although Beijing claims the island. The Philippines has no diplomatic ties with Taiwan but maintains economic and cultural links. -- AFP [NST] Again with the pinoy saying "we not there" This post has been edited by KYPMbangi: May 10 2013, 11:47 AM |

QUOTE(noavatar @ May 15 2013, 12:31 PM) Taiwan freezes hiring of Philippine workers over death Isnt that like hurting their own economy?AFP Updated May 15, 2013, 11:06 am TAIPEI (AFP) - Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou on Wednesday froze the hiring of Philippine workers to express "strong dissatisfaction" over Manila's handling of the killing of a Taiwanese fisherman, his spokeswoman said. The 65-year-old fisherman was shot dead by Filipino coastguards last week after they said his boat had strayed into Philippine waters. "President Ma expressed his strong dissatisfaction over the Philippines' lack of sincerity and its shifting attitude," Lee Chia-fei told reporters, adding that Ma had decided to recall Taipei's envoy to Manila. Antonio Basilio, the Philippines' de facto ambassador, had also been asked to return to Manila to "help properly handle" the case, she said. Lee reiterated Ma's demands that Manila issue a "formal apology," compensate the victim's family, apprehend the killer and start fishing talks between the two sides soon. "If the Philippine government cannot satisfy our side's four demands by 6:00 pm (1000 GMT) today, our government will adopt a second wave of sanctions," Lee said. Taipei made the decision despite an apology by Basilio after a closed-door meeting with Foreign Minister David Lin on Tuesday. The Philippines will send special envoy Amadeo Perez to repeat his "deep regret and apology from the people of the Philippines" to the people of Taiwan and the fisherman's family, according to Basilio. However, Taiwan's Premier Jiang Yi-huah said it was unacceptable that the apology comes from the "people of the Philippines" rather than the government as it was the coastguard that shot the fisherman. Perez is chairman of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) that represents the Philippines' interest in Taiwan. The incident sparked outrage in Taiwan and comes at a time of heightened tensions around the region over rival claims to the nearby South China Sea. Taiwan has threatened to conduct a naval exercise in waters near the Philippines. |
