In Abrams ammunition is in a separate compartment....when hit the lid blows off (blowout plate)..... and the explosion goes straight up, not into the crew compartment.

the ammo is in the back behind the loader, inside a blast-proof cabinet.
the loader grabs the required shell and immediately closes the cabinet.
extra ammo is stored in the front, near the driver.

Reactive armor plates, When some shell/rocket (especially RPG) hit that "brick", the brick will be triggered to self explosion, use this explosion force to deflect the incoming projectile. After one use, the tank area that covered with the reactive armor plates will no longer be protected by reactive armor (since the brick had exploded)

Nowadays, some RPG warheads had tandem warheads to pre-trigger the reactive armor to explode early, making it less effective at countering RPG.
*
newer model plates are designed to defeat these kind of warhead, and sometimes the plates are being being stacked on top of another

some tanks are also equipped with slat and plate armor to increase survivability in urban area, such the TUSK upgrade for M1A1/2

of coz there is..otherwise it would be like a mobile oven for the crew..furthermore, most modern tanks and APCs got NBC features in them..so there would be aircond with filter in it..

Not all, some western tank still use manual reload. So most of their tank crew consist of 4 people (captain, driver, gunner, loader)

Most of the auto-reloaded tank are those russian tanks, or France's AMX Le'clerc tank.

most western tank designs don't have auto-loader i.e. leo, abrams etc
auto-loader more common in soviet/russian designs i.e the t-xx

the overall design maybe(it's still looks like and overweight tractor with a mofo-ing cannon on top of it) tanks today look pretty much like they were during wwii(hell before that)

but inside, it's pretty much improved.from armor to FCS to sensor to communication system

India, Singapore sign agreement on training facilities for army

New Delhi, June 4 (IANS) India and Singapore have signed a fresh agreement to extend the use of training and exercise facilities in India by the Singapore Army for another five years beginning August this year.

According to an official release Tuesday, the agreement was signed Monday night by Defence Secretary Radha Krishna Mathur and the Singapore’s Permanent Secretary of Defence Chiang Chie Foo.

The agreement was signed in presence of Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.

Antony arrived in Singapore Monday evening as part of his three-nation visit. He will also visit Australia and Thailand.

The release said that a bilateral agreement for utilisation of facilities in India by the Singapore Air Force and the Indian Army was signed in October 2007 and August 2008, respectively.

The agreement for training and exercises of Singapore Air Force in India was extended up to October 2017 during the visit of Singapore’s permanent secretary of defence to India in July last year.

The release said Singapore is the only country to which India is offering such facilities.

The two sides held wide ranging talks on defence cooperation. They also exchanged views on global and regional security issues including security in Asia-Pacific region.

US woos Indonesia, China offensive on S China Sea

Tuesday, Jun 04, 2013

While China took a combined offensive and persuasive approach when talking about its role in the South China Sea, US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel singled-out Indonesia during a two-day international dialogue on security and defence here.

Indonesia must play a strategic role in maintaining regional order and the US wants to build a strong relationship with the archipelagic nation, the Pentagon chief said over the weekend.

"As a large, diverse and democratic country, Indonesia has a key role in helping lead this region," Hagel said at the first plenary session of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday.

"The United States and Indonesia - the world's largest Muslim-majority nation - are building new habits of cooperation that reflect a shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous region,' Hagel said in his speech.

"The United States and Indonesia are working together on humanitarian assistance and disaster response, maritime security, international peacekeeping and combating transnational threats"

Hagel also mentioned that it was the long-term US strategy to build strong relationships with rising powers such as India, Indonesia and China as part of its pivot or rebalancing to Asia.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that China on Sunday deflected criticism over its actions in several maritime disputes with its neighbours and defended its relationship with North Korea.

Lt. Gen. Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of the People's Liberation Army, reiterated at an annual security conference in Singapore that the Chinese government and military only seek peaceful development and that other countries should not view its strengthening military as a threat.

China is embroiled in a series of running disputes with its neighbours, including with Japan that soured bilateral relations and with several countries around the South China Sea who dispute China's claims to potentially oil-rich areas of the sea.

Beijing and Tokyo have been caught up in a long-running battle over what the Japanese call the Senkaku Islands and the Chinese call Diaoyutai. China recently asserted its dominance by sending government ships into Japanese territorial waters in April.

Qi said China was only safeguarding its sovereignty in its dispute with Japan, where both claim ownership of the islands -other countries in the South China Sea such as Vietnam and the Philippines also maintain ownership claims.

"Chinese warships and patrolling activity are totally legitimate; it is uncontroversial to patrol within our territory," Qi said when being questioned by delegates.

The deputy chief faced a series of pointed questions about China's growing military and regional assertiveness and joked that he thought he would have "an easier time than Chuck Hagel".

Reiterating China's stance, Qi said it wanted to resolve disputes through bilateral negotiations. Some countries want multilateral talks, feeling China's size is too much of an advantage in direct talks.

Meanwhile Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan is strengthening its economy and military to play a responsible international role, seeking to defuse suspicion of neighbours scarred by attacks and occupations in the last century.

Japan, a US ally in dispute with China over maritime territory and within range of North Korean missiles, "caused tremendous damage and suffering" in the past but wants to look to the future by promoting cooperation, Onodera said here on Saturday.

"A strong Japan will play a responsible role in the area of regional security and exercise strong leadership as expected by the international community," Onodera said, as quoted by Reuters.
