Normal displays has refresh rate of 60Hz... if the picture on your screen is changing more than 60 times per second (the 60Hz) the image will tear because the graphic card and monitor is not in sync and the image on monitor is updated parts by parts which cause the tearings.

So, V-sync will wait for new data for whole screen before telling graphic card it can send to monitor. Since monitor can only show 60 screens in 1 second, so the framerate by graphic card will be limited to 60. Since the update is now image of whole screens instead of parts by parts the tearing is eliminated.

I know this is pretty much oversimplified, but that's more or less how it works.

So that mean it is better to use vsync. Normally i always found monitor with 60hz. Neva more than that. I think 60 fps is already good isnt it? Vsync helps gpu less burden am i rite

Hi.

I have a question to ask, need your advise since you guys are Lenovo Y400 users.

I just bought Lenovo Y400. I'm facing a problem with the graphic card Nvidia GT750m installation. The drivers cd that is provided with the set doesn't seems to help with the installation of the GPU. Everytime I try to install the driver of Nvidia, it says Nvidia installer cannot continue, this graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware. I tried to find the driver at Nvidia website and even Lenovo website, but still cant find any of GT750m driver. Please advise me on how to handle this issue. Its a very dissapointing coz I cannot fully utilize my laptop performance.

Thanks in advance. notworthy.gif

Just trying to help here. i went to Lenovo's website and found this y500/y400 malaysia driver page

If the latest drivers here can't work then may I suggest you buy original Windows then ask Lenovo SC to help install for you.

Not necessarily... V-sync also depends a lot on how the game is programmed as well... it can cause micro-stutter (e.g in Hitman Absolution)... it also can cause less responsive inputs (casual gamers might not mind, but competitive players always complains about this)... and I don't think V-sync helps to reduce the GPU loads, instead it can cause the load to increase and reducing the framerate... You should try first and see if it cause any trouble... if it makes you more uncomfortable than screen tearing, just disable V-sync... I disabled it in Hitman Absolution simply because the micro-stutter actually bothers me more than screen tearing...

As for the monitor, normally monitor comes with 60Hz... but some rare-breed expensive gaming monitors does comes with 120Hz (which usually compatible with nVidia 3DVision)

If I'm not mistaken, GT750M doesn't have official driver right now... So you are left with no options except the one included in the CD... the driver probably a modified version by Lenovo for early support... so, all you can do is either wait for the official driver by nVidia, or change the OS to the compatible version...

When i install windows 8, i face the same problem as you when i install the gt750 driver from drivers cd "Nvidia installer cannot continue, this graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware". But after that, i tried to download the gt750 driver from Lenovo Support under VIDEO section then download the NVDIA driver. And now it works fine for me without any issues. Btw, im currently using windows 7 with gt750 driver that download from lenovo site installed and using it without any issues. Hope this will help you. smile.gif

Oh, thank you for your explanation! But what about micro-stuttoring. How we experience this.

i didnt know there was a Y500 when i bought the Y400.. sweat.gif i was rushing to buy it as well..in replace of my broken down Asus G55VW which i broke one week ago.. impulse buying without thinking, but the lenovo Y Series impress me very much with its removable bay allows the user to swap according to ones need. Loved the Red keyboard light up..much better than my previous laptop.. and most of all its damn not heavy like G55VW 4kg weight..like a tank that one...

this Y400 will be my good friend when i travel back to work most of the time traveling and i do enjoy my gaming as well smile.gif thanks for the clarification on the dual gpu..it would be cool to see two gpu's running at the same time ( ishoulhave bought Y500)

Well enjoy your y400. It does have a 2nd GPU, just I was trying to highlight that its not the same one as the y500. Seems the ultrabay design is different for both the y400 and y500. Last I check when I was buying my y500, the ultrabay GPU for the y400 cost rm700+.

700+? wow. quite hefty. tongue.gif

i'm wondering whether should I buy that or not too. the performance will be increasing much?

btw, i'm using notepal u3 but my y400 is still kinda hot. 60-65 celcius when i used it in the afternoon. hmm.gif

night time, it's still good. 55-60 celcius. hmm.gif

Ya blame it on the weather these few days/weeks. The price is high cause the ultrabay GPU comes with another 170w power supply. You will need it when running both GPU. Not sure about y400 but my y500 when running on batt the GPU clock speed is cap (SLI). You only get full performance when running on mains.

The amazing thing is I can play games on my 51" TV via HDMI (I play World of tanks) in full HD while getting great frame rates.

Currently no complains so far for my y500. Hope the same is true for your y400 ya. Enjoy it biggrin.gif
