I'm already on EEPROM 24.204 since I purchased my car in July 2013 - no updates made so far but still having the grinding sound on Gears 1 & 2.

I may be wrong but we might be seeing the wrong software instead; the transmission calibration update may only be checked with an IDS (Integrated Diagnostic System; unlike the OBD2 scanner which is only a reader, this is also a writer) that is available at the SC.

If you see TSB 13-9-4, it mentions the following :-

"Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM)/transmission control module (TCM) module to the latest calibration using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) release 86.01 or higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com."

If anyone can verify or share with us on how we can identify the transmission calibration update by ourselves - that would be excellent. In the meantime, let's continue to google & also see if we could get this info from any of the SC people.

UPDATE:-

After some research, I managed to retrieve the following info :-

All about IDS - a must read to all Focus enthusiast

How to update the Calibration software via IDS

How to check Calibration version for Mondeo (should be same with Focus)

Latest available - IDS 87.03 (requires 87.01)

DO REMEMBER TO ONLY PERFORM ANY OF THESE UPDATES THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER ELSE YOU MAY EITHER VOID YOUR WARRANTY OR POSSIBLY DAMAGE YOUR VEHICLE.

Hello All,

I received my car on Wednesday and have driven it for almost 300KM. I don't have the low speed juddering at 1st-2nd gear... it felt almost like a normal auto-box unlike the show room car which i test drove with my wife. Put in to D, and it will start to creep forward slowly just like any conventional auto box. FYI, i drive daily in Seri Kembangan jams in the morning and after work.

Loving my Ford Focus to bits.. biggrin.gif Cheers!

After loan approved, about 2 weeks to get my cars. Yours might be faster as i wanted to transfer my old license plate to the new car, hence need to go through all the Puspakom inspection thingy. Best part, MySikap kicked in and more delay.. doh.gif

Good to know your car does not exhibit the slightest low speed juddering. You must be surely lucky. Hopefully it stays that way until about 2,000km. In my case the shuddering is at its peak in between 100km to 1,500km. At 2,000km and above the shuddering slowly diminishes approaching the smoothness of conventional auto transmissions.

Yes, the handling of the Focus especially in long journeys on the highways is certainly worth mentioning. The stability on the highways especially in heavy rain is great. There is just a feeling of confidence when behind the wheels of the Focus.

Do update on the drive when the mileage gets past 1,000km, whether the low-speed drive is still as smooth as conventional auto boxes. Similarly there is no juddering in my Focus unlike some complaints here on the shuddering, though I did experience it earlier around 500km+/-. After about 1,500km, it performs like a conventional automatic transmission when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear, but with superb acceleration with the added power.

A bit surprised you don't experience with any shuddering even though the car is still new. Anyway, do enjoy the vehicle. THe handling is certainly excellent. I was on the highways last weekend and with the rainy season, the car is very stable even when I was doing 110km/h in heavy rain.

Hi All,

An update. Low speed juddering still not present, but just this morning in a jam - i experience that the car is sometime in-decisive when changing gear. It constantly tries switch between gears 1 and 2, otherwise its all good. Will update again once it passes 500km.

The indecisiveness in sudden speed burst or drops is pretty normal - just like a normal manual car where the driver may up or downshift in a sudden manner during similar situations.

Do note that the transmission requires a burn-in (more of learning) period where it studies the driving pattern of the driver. This may take about 1000km (for city only driving; where shifting of gears is frequent) or up to 3000km (for highway driving; where shifting of gears doesn't occur too frequently).

The issue on the shuddering and grinding actually may have a relation to this IF your have passed your burn-in period & are experiencing this in frequently under normal driving conditions; where the transmission isn't correctly calibrated on the proper shift patterns and engages/disengages the clutches prematurely/late.

Take note that if the software update doesn't rectify the issue faced (specifically to those that had FREQUENT shuddering, shift issues when mileage is high i.e. >10000km), it might be a seal leak that has occurred onto the clutch plates - causing it to slip / difficult to engage. See TSB 13-9-4 which actually addresses this.

I do believe you may not have these issues since your car is relatively new and may already have the latest transmission calibration software pre-installed - so don't get too worked up and enjoy your ride.
