Funny story to share from earlier this year...it's cheaper to fly HKG-KUL-LHR than it is to fly direct KUL-LHR.
I redeemed my Enrich points for this journey, paid lesser miles than I had if I took KUL-LHR, and get to spend an extra 4 hours flying business class out of Hong Kong and enjoying the incredible Cathay lounge (MAS shares their lounge with Cathay in HK). It took about 240k miles for my family to travel business class return (two adults and one baby).
I suppose MAS is trying to fill up their KUL-LHR flights and this is the reason for it...until today I wasn't very sure why this is the case.
Anyway the only down side is the flight was very tiring but that was probably due to the baby being cranky and not letting us get much sleep even during the flight to London. On the plus side she got a seat all to herself because there were not that many people travelling in Business, and the flight attendants were kind enough to cheer her up.
This is a known strategy in the airline industry. A one-stop service will often times be more expensive than direct service. They are taking advantage of the convenience they provide.
Imagine youâre staying in KUL and wanted to head to LHR. MH offered you a direct flight which cost 1000 and takes 12hours. CX (somehow) knows that you are going to LHR, and instead of letting MH earn your business, CX will try to woo you over, by providing you with a cheaper price (eg 850), at the expense of time (one stop will take probably 16hours) as this will now be KUL-HKG-LHR. Youâll also have additional risk, eg if your KUL-HKG is delayed causing you to miss the connecting flight or baggage didnât make it etc. For CX, if theyâre not taking your business, theyâre gonna fly empty anyway so a bit discount wonât hurt.
â Might not be the best example but my understanding is as such.
In your case, MH will not know that you just want to fly KUL-LHR, theyâll just know that Iâm gonna be competitive and try to win some passengers from other countries. And hence theyâll sell you cheaper for HKG-KUL-LHR. And airline rule is such that if you miss your first leg or HKG-KUL, your entire journey will be voided, so you cannot be funny and just turn up in KUL for the KUL-LHR without taking the first flight.
