My first not bad night shot, Nikon 3100 without tripod

1) Actually what should we prepare if want to bring our camera to winter country when snowing? Last time I heard my friend said his camera lense freeze when bring the camera up the mountain in new Zealand, I think that time should be very cold.
I will go Hokkaido soon for winter snow shot, so what should I prepare for that weather condition? I think it won't be too cold until lense freez.

2) I tested my 18-55mm Nikon lense, and I found that the picture sharpness quality of 55mm is almost same like picture taken with 35mm. My friend said better to always shoot with 35mm, since you can just crop it out later since the quality will be same as picture taken with 55mm, and I think what he said is true. What do you think?
*
1. I went to Swiss and -10 degree and camera still shooting like usual !
2. 35mm prime ? or kit lens ? if your resolution not big enough, crop out also blurry la. Your friend master ? laugh.gif
I give him 800x600 ask him crop out to 55mm focal length and see.
If you're on zoom, just use any focal length that you're comfortable with

1) I see, so I think Hokkaido should not have freeze problem, I heard last time my friend one is -30 maybe

2) Kit lens, resolution sure use the highest one (2400x 1900, something like that one for mine) so when I Zoom in photo and compare seems 55mm not really improve the object sharpness. Probably because 35 55 mm but much difference...

My friend not pro, now using mid level Nikon camera only

Ok lor, mine's old model. You also own Peugeot?

Hehe, those can compare by specs. I think the main confusing thing is DX lens vs FX lens. Some people may confused that DX lens means no need to multiply by crop factor when mount on DX body, but actually you still need.
But when you mount DX lens on FX body, then it will be using CROP mode, which means you need to multiply by crop factor. So a DX lens at 18mm, will give you 27mm regardless you mount on DX body or FX body.

D600 is using Full Frame sensor (FX). 24mm will give you actual 24mm.
D90 is Crop Sensor (DX). The crop factor is 1.5X, so whatever lens you mount, you need to multiply by 1.5X to get the actual focal length (in 25mm format). So your 18mm, when mount on your D90, the focal length will be 27mm.

Other than that, 18-105mm kit lens on the D90 is a DX lens, while the 24-85mm kit lens that comes with D600 is a FX lens.

Thanks for the reply sir, appreciate it notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
And thanks for the info, my friend did told me something like that as well haha~

Based on what I've heard, for Nikon the DX lenses can also be used on full-frame camera right? hmm.gif
And apart from the focal lengths, I was wondering whether you have any comments on the image quality? Thanks in advance again~~ notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Sorry to disturb you guys but I have a noob question if you don't mind laugh.gif
I'd noticed that the Nikon D600 comes with a 24-85mm kit lens.
I am personally using a Nikon D90 with a 18-105mm kit lens. I was wondering what's the difference between these two lenses apart from the range? How come the higher end D600 comes with a shorter range lens?

*
Let me "try" to answer this questions in my humble opinion... biggrin.gif

Kit lens are "usually" sold to first time DSLR buyer... and I think Nikon is targeting D600 to first time DSLR FX users or users upgrading from DX to FX body... ( or people with lots of dough and no dunno where to spend it... whistling.gif )

The lens zoom range is too subjective and depends on your requirements, do you shoot more landscape, portraits, birds or everything in between...

If the zoom range fit your budget/requirements, then buy the kit, or else just get the body only and buy the lens or a few lens to fit your budget/spending/requirements...

Goto http://www.mylensdb.com/ and do your own comparison la...

Haha, I'm no Sifu, just sharing my findings from all the AW past posting from those real SIFU which already buried deep inside the forum.
You can also read some information about it here:
http://my206club.blogspot.com/2008/11/info...l4-gearbox.html

Basically a used unit main concern is how the previous owner take care of it and make sure they don't use non-authorised ATF. Modern gearbox are more sensitive or important to use the right ATF. Another problem is "water", try your best to avoid floods.

Yes, that's the advantage of Nikon. When you mount DX lens on full frame camera, there is a CROP Mode, where your 18mm DX lens will become 27mm due to the Crop Mode, this is because the lens cannot utilize the full frame sensor area. Hence, a DX lens.

As for image quality, can't comment because I have no experience using both and compare. But FX lens are more expensive and when mount on DX, it should give better result because it's utilizing the centre area which is usually the strength of the lens. The problem is when you mount on DX body, 24mm will become 36mm which is no longer wide.

Built quality, feel wise, I believe the D600 bundled lens will be much better. Perhaps when you try and feel both you will know. Besides, aperture wise, the bundled lens for D600 is f/3.5 to f/4.5, plus it's a refresh of the older yet very good 24-85mm f/3.5-4 AF-D.

not sure la, FX lens width is wider than common DX right? also allow more light go in sensor? hmm.gif (need critic this)

also old time FX lens built for pro right? so overall the quality also quite good? duno now la after D600 out hmm.gif (need critic this)

just thinking... unsure.gif

sure got.
i guess this will be somewhat a mini-D4...seeing as how both D600 and D800 dont fill that niche.

Nikon D300s/D7000 fusion

One of the possible scenarios is that in 2013 Nikon will merge the D7000 and D300s product lines. There is a good chance that only one high end DX DSLR camera will be announced (D400 or D8000?) that will replace both D7000 and D300s models. The camera will have a "pro" body similar to the D300s and most likely come with a 24MP sensor and 8fps. The D3200 and D5200 should be sufficient to cover the entry level needs. The new DX camera will be the "transition model" to the full frame category (D600). Expected announcement: January/February 2013.

fotokem are trying to clear remaining stocks of D5100 before the D5200 arrives sometime dec / jan.
the D5200 arguably can be called a mini D7000...and definitely better than either D3200 or D5100.
since ur going next yr, no harm waiting a month or two more.

when exactly is your trip? if it's early next year, i'd say get the D3200/D5100 instead of waiting for the D5200. so you can have a DSLR to practice with before you go in your trip smile.gif if wait for D5200, terus go trip but still dunno how to use, spoil laa hehehe

between the two models, they're very very similar indeed. i prefer the D5100's swivel screen (it's rarely useful, but when you need it, it's there!).
