Dslr sensor will produce better quality photos compared to compact. If you're new and really just want to take some pretty good quality photos at a budget, consider the panasonic lumix dmc-lx7. I think it can go as close as 1cm for macro shots. Check out the reviews.

But of course, once you step into dslr world, you may never want to go back to compact unless somehow portability and convenience is still more important to you smile.gif

For me, it's not that case. I bought an Olympus TG-2 even after having nex5 n nex6. More Important that the picture you compose tells a story, or invokes an emotion from the viewer, irregardless of what camera was used.

I use the handphone cam where appropriate wink.gif . For some, handphone cam is the best fit for them to express themselves and that's fine too.

this is still back to portability... i think there was a saying.. the best camera you have is the one in your hands.

i understand what you are trying to say, what i mean is given the same scenario, mood, location, if you take a photo with hp, compact, and dslr - i’m pretty sure the dslr will capture the highest quality shot :-)

Hi guys, i have some questions about sony NEX-5R. With the kit SEL1650 lens, is it any good for landscape photography?

Also, i have a friend who uses a canon dslr with the square filter set. His long-exposure beach shots came up extremely saturated, sometimes alien-looking in color. How do i replicate this with the nex-5r? Not really sure on what to buy. Thanks in advance!

Right, portability Yup and the waterproof reliability. Yea, generally the bigger the sensor, a higher quality image is be expected but technology keeps changing the odds. That OM-D jpg results can beat some APS-C's! Also, New Panasonic GX-7 look to be upping the ante to APS-C's too.

The end results depends on which medium and size is being used, I've seen those huge billboards, department store wallpapers that are huge, single storey high, which probably requires high megapixel count to be that sharp n detailed. But of course maybe they stitched smaller megapixel images to form that one big picture.. who knows laugh.gif , lot's of tricks in the digital world.

ic.. my simplistic mind says... just borrow his filter and ask for the settings, copy the same settings on 5R. Maybe Meng Keat can help on the filters and stacking of filters to get that.

Today @ CEX, met MengKeat and RX-78 .

- For NEX, one stall selling casings RM50 for 2 items.. the casing looks like Gariz type.
- Sigma selling 'Art' line 30mm 2.8 and 19mm 2.8 around RM650 - RM690 price.
- Tamron 18-200 i think priced at RM24xx..
- There's a display that mounts and OM-D on a vibrating platform and u see the image shake on the big screen. When you 1/2 press the shutter.. my gawd drool.gif the image stabilizes so perfectly. NO wonder 5-Axis is sooOOo.. impressive. Imagine this on the NEX-Full Frame!!

Some compact will even go sub 1 cm.  but the sensor size is small and yes, image quality is not there at all..

You can go nearer if you are using old manual lens.. just shim with extension tubes.... cheap and nasty but works just a well unless you are the serious macro photographer.

The other issue is subject to distance magnification.. usually you will find a longer lens will work better for most situaiton than a shorter lens.. look around and you will see the 100mm range are about the best for macro work for APSC sensor because it give you 1:1 and you have good distance to camera.

Before I started changing my setup with full manual lens, I use my SEL55210 for macro work.. cant really get that close but a lot bigger image than I could with my kit lens.

Do note that when you get too close, exposure will become an issue... so are shadows.

If you new and seriously into macro, do your homework before you consider compact.. there is quite a bit of workflow to understand. Each hurdle will have a new issue to overcome.  The solutions may not be expensive if you understand its limits. Most important is the base system you have selected. sweat.gif

simple extension will help on the macro shot!! but u must have manual control on the lens!!

How much does the old manual lens + extension tube cost? How close can it go in macro shooting?

old manual lens price can be RM100 to RM1k++ and above depends on brand, model and conditions.
Extension tube is about RM30++ for a set of 3 tubes.
It can be up to very close depends on the lens.
this is without optical elements so it not affect the image quality much.

Don't buy those Magnifier type of Macro extension lens. it is quite useless with only can get sharp at the tiny center portion.

you can also use reverse macro ring which a lot of DSLR experts using.

Planning to get a sony 3N for my girlfriend, is there any recommended add on lens for this camera? Would love something small and has good quality other than the current 16-50 PZ.

Oh ya.... Guys... My NEX-6 built in flash short circuit. When I flip it out n flash, it spark with loud noise with bunga api effect. The plastic cover On the flash assembly also flew off.

Crazy... In front of cosplayers. Just this afternoon indoors at sg Wang. Happen with my eye On the viewfinder. Lucky it didn't explode or shock or shatter into my eye.

I use Nex weekly for the past 10 months, only sometimes with flash.. But still.. Surprised. Really surprised.
