Hello all, I have read the 1st few pages of this thread and also the last page (this page). But I still don't see a question similar to something I would like to ask  smile.gif

I am a 20 year old 1st year Marketing and Management student in Metropolitan College. I don't think my future business degree will get me a job in Oil and Gas industry I guess  sweat.gif

I am really really interested in joining the OnG industry. Would like to work off-shore.Being away from family and working hard for the 1st 10 years is perfectly fine for me. FYI my dad is in the OnG industry too. The reason why I chose a business course over OnG was because I initially thought that the OnG industry will die out very soon but I later found out that I was wrong. It's far from over.

So my question is,

1) Currently, what are the most highly demanded job in the OnG industry? Off shore preferred  smile.gif  I heard that many companies are looking for ROV pilots, is that a good choice?

2) What kind of courses do I need to take to join the OnG industry? Where can I get them? As I have not finished any tertiary studies I only have my secondary school results to show. I didn't really do well in my SPM though. 2A's (Eng and Math), a stack of B's and C's for my Biology and Chemistry  cry.gif  Am I qualified for any OnG courses?

3) I believe a lot of you would have guessed by now. I am in for the money and traveling that working in OnG offers. Do YOU think it is advisable for me to quit my business degree half way to pursue some relevant OnG courses, or should I finish my degree 1st? Just in case?

I would really really appreciate all comment and suggestions. I am seriously considering what actions should I take now. I am not young anymore, I need help from you experienced guys! Help!

Thank you!!! Appreciate your reply very very much. I will check them out right away  thumbup.gif

But what about other than being a ROV pilot?

Added on June 1, 2008, 11:38 am

new~b0y, the link you provided me brings me to a site offering courses from USA only wo... So I can just join an ROV course even though I know nothing about it? Well I play computer games... It says it helps a bit  laugh.gif

The nearest training centre is in Tasmania, Australia. Look at the bottom of the page. I'm not sure about the entry requirements for the course, but all I know is that you're going to pay a lot of money for it.

Guys, usually how long does it take to know your final interview result? I had my 2nd face to face interview with Shell about a month ago and until today no results has been given.  i was told after the interview it would take around 2 weeks for the final decision.  I've checked my status online and it's still under final assessment. I've called the HR a week ago and they too haven't got any info from the respective dept.

I have received an offer from another company but I've been stalling my answer.  Btw, do they let you know via mail if you're not selected? Thanks!
*
my status has changed from FINAL ASSESSMENT to OFFER. but i still dont get any call from Shell. just wait them to call me.

from what i ve been told by the HR, they will decide in 1 or 2 weeks time. they will let you know whether you are successful or not. so dont worries abt this. just wait n see. but however, if they dont call you in quite long time, just assume that that you are not selected or KIV. this happens to me because i applied the position on jan-08, just got the called from shell on mar-08 for phone interview, and 2nd interview just happened last week which was on last week of may-08. so dont bother abt this.

so now did you get any good news from shell? did they call u?

I discussed with my dad about taking up some courses related to OnG industry. He says the demand is high now, companies will take anybody but by the time I graduate the demand will slow down so it's better to arm myself with a degree.

But wouldn't it be better if I do it now? rather than 2 years later?

Anyway, he said we can discuss about it after my college exams laugh.gif

Does anyone here know the starting pay for SBM fresh grad. process engineer?

I'm currently working in another consultancy comp, and I want to change the working environment as the place I'm working now sucks.

Anyone any idea?

P.S. Does anyone have any idea who pays the most among all the consultancies? Technip? or...?
*
erm... dont think SBM hire Process Engineer...
Technip is one of the highest pay consultancy company in Malaysia, eventhought their starting pay for fresh grad is around rm2400, but their yearly increment is around 25% to 35%... as a fresh Process Engineer, dont think bout salary, get ur experience first then only talk bout ur salary... try to get involved in certain process route and master it, this will help u to negotiate for ur salary in future...ofcoz site experiece like commissioining will be a added value to ur CV....
But frm wat i know, technip dint realy sent freshie to site for commissioning, u will sit in the office for 2 -3 years.... So, is better u join other smaller consultancy company that willing to sent u to site for commissioning....

Wow! So does it mean like... You can't straight away take some courses that actually prepare you to be a ROV pilot? Or like what you said we have to slowly advance through the ranks? I'm really interested. I think I might follow what you did.

Think again. Being a diver is a very risky job. That's why you're paid a lot of money and plus you only work for 5 hours a day, maybe less. Sometimes when the weather conditions is bad, you don't work at all but still getting paid, sweet isn't it?

You don't have to become a diver first before becoming an ROV pilot. I have met a lot of guys who went to become a trainee after graduating from some engineering diploma course. And yes, it does help if you're good with video games, hand and eyes coordination is important.

true, but being ROV pilot u need the experience diving for a few hundred hours. at least that is what my boss told me. btw, im working in a human resource firm which specializes in mobilizing ppl to work in offshore industries, with at least 5 years working experience in offshore work.

risky or not as far as the statistics are concerned, there are zero casualty because of accident in diving in malaysia for the past 10 years. yes, there are death, but because of foolhardiness and stubbornness. zero accident.

edited: working as practical trainee, im finishing my bachelor's degree.

Why do ROV pilots need to dive? I thought what ROV pilots do are sit some where in the rig, control your machine from the control room, besides that you are responsible for repairing and maintaining your baby machine. That's why it's called ROV right?
