Are u sure telco is the sector which can beat OnG? as per my understanding, telco in Malaysia has reach a maturity stage and the market is saturated. based on research, the growth rate for telco in malaysia is about 3-4%. but the marginal increment can be in big amount (RM). What i am really foresee a good market to beat OnG is banking industry due to the need of risk and compliance to mitigate the potential issue, such as 2008 global financial crisis.

I agree on this. Oil and Gas is an all time best paid career, especially in Malaysia. Telco is definitely not as competitive as you think it is.

In oil n gas.. 6k salary is nothing.. In my company.. if we work offshore for 2 week.. you can get more than 10k. even though you just working for 1 year.. the offshore allowance is high.. but normally my clicks didn't want to stay offshore for too long because of no life...

In a month you're living as a no-lifer for 2 weeks which accounts for half a month, that means if your whole OnG career is gonna be spent on the ocean, half of your career you don't have life

just a joke no offense though notworthy.gif

Still I'm having a huge huge interest in this industry though, because the environment is challenging and not to forget, the money is good.

But I suppose the risk is high coz you're working close to heavy machinery and most of all, you're way out in the ocean, right?
Hence all the trainings & safety stuff by those OnG companies.

What background are you?

There is non-engineer position for offshore. Just that you are more to support the offshore crew eg. medic, radiooperator, catering crew and etc. If you are doing IT/Telecommunication, most likely you are able to go offshore but it will be not that frequent, more to support the offshore crew to troubleshoot problems.

But I hear when you work offshore it's like staying in a hotel in the middle of the sea.

Unlimited food supplies, drinks, satellite TVs, internet, gymnasium, playstation 2, can also go fishing in the evening. Good money good life. Just you will be seing the same guys (most likely guys) everyday.

Hello guys.... i just wanna ask a very simple question.
Is the O&G industry a trade-off of social life for money (for an engineer) ? I'm interested in joining but I still want a LIFE.

not necessary...there are various positions in the industry..ranging from onshore to offshore..

if you're office based, then there's no difference from other occupation..but of course you don't earn the same amount of money that offshore can give you...unless you work for 7-8 years in the office for example.

dude, there's no "free meal" in this world..be realistic

hi all. I'm a master student, currently doing full time research in petrophysics and rock physics field. i would like to know my chances in oil and gas industry after my graduation. i've heard before that if O&G companies want to hire people with master qualification, they will put us (master holder) in research only. Meaning that, we will mostly spend our time in lab. Not sure whether this is true or not.. rclxub.gif Since this is O&G forum full with O&G experienced people, so i'm asking this question. Can i apply for positions other than lab-based like exploration or field engineering, etc2...?

Since youre taking petrophysics, than its very likely you will work in office (although you can always try a diff position). Petrophysicist is quite in demand in Malaysia, since its quite hard to find locally breed petrophisicist (mostly regional or expat). In oil companies or consultants, you'll work in the office (not lab). Your job will be assessing well log data to determine reservoir quality, fluid, pressure, etc. You will be busiest during drilling season. Other than that, its just a normal office hour.
