Thanks for your reply, I have decided to accept the offer. Actually I would prefer a position involved more on technical stuff as my first job, but I guessed learning how to deal with people ain't that bad also  smile.gif  I hope i made a wise decision

Hehe, 1 tips for you from me, procurement means paperwork, SAP, tender, contract, tender commitee presentation, invoicing, inventory, bidding the whole lot. You will most probably not do any technical except familiarization. Most of the technical requirement will come from the engineers.

This only apply if you work for the Operator (Petronas/Exxon/Shell)..for Service company (SLB, Baker, MI) are diff.

Good luck.

I am offered for a Material Planner/Procurement position in an O&G service company. May I know what is the future prospect of a material planner/procurement engineer in O&G or any other industry? BTW I am a fresh grad with mechanical engineering degree, not sure if I make a correct decision to take this offer... very confusing right now

Its a so so job. But your responsibility is also consider important as quoting the wrong item or wrong price might lead to loss for the company. Some times you might be the middle man, e.g the dealing with vendor n service company so work load might be intense esp progress follow up and during tender. IMO its a learning platform for me too esp on the SAP, but i heard most employee in petronas dealing with procurement have a chance to go offshore.

hey christine,
what's your status and designation?
mine is IC and they assigned me as junior seismic engineer-OBP
i suppose for IC they probably send me to oslo for school and pre-school..correct me if i'm wrong smile.gif

I had my first interview last November at the office, they called me for final screening around February
2 weeks later, I received my offer letter from Gatwick.Met Kak Fauziah 2 days ago to discuss some stuff regarding the banking account, credit card, intl driving license and stuff. It's pretty exciting actually. thumbup.gif

Hehe...SLB the big blue aaa, wait till you come offshore and see what kinda job you really do, most people i know in SLB quit after 5 yrs being squeeze, they give u lots of money, they also expect alot from you. The best part usually the first 2-3 yrs where you go training, but once you breakout, hell

This is so true, start small, get offshore experience - most important. Most operator will not accept trainee on board offshore unless the service company send trainee FOC, free of charge, due to bed space constraint / chopper charge / meal etc. Once you got 2 yrs experience offshore, running the job yourself without any f*** up then the business will keep coming in. Sometimes a guy with 3 yrs experience working with you is way better than a new unknown guy with 15 yrs experience elsewhere smile.gif. Build your rapport and people will acknowledge you.

Offshore life is a small world, the people on board are like your families and stories does go around, so watch out.

I am going to do a master in petroleum geology soon. Could any kind soul here enlighten me that what are the differences between geology and geophysic. I browse through most of the job advertisement, It seems like these two disciplines make no difference in term of job scope.

@xtacy1205

Welcome to Western Geco. Don't worry, OBP ppl have the cushiest job offshore and you still get the same amount of money as the guys who's work are more physical in nature. Just sit in the onboard office and process data only.. end of the month watch the money come rolling in. Better advancement opportunities too compared to office based DP engineers.

abu dhabi's more open than qatar, but less than dubai. OFS-1 just an orientation, take it easy, have fun, meet new friends, can probably find out who'll be in the new location with you.

it's gonna be hot!!!...prob. around 45-55 degC till August, then autumn & winter (winter's about 7-15 degC). Not recommended to bare too much skin in qatar though, since you'll get alot of stares from everyone & also it's an Islamic country. Ratio of men:women in Qatar's probably like 10:1, maybe even higher!

pre-school should be around 3 months +/- 1-2 months, depending on your manager. Then to school, then back to location to work until you get your promotion. Anyway, they'll explain more in OFS-1.

Which segment are you in?

My vaccinations took like 1 week to feel less sore.

thanks for the info! i thought it was going to be hot, but i figured up to 40-45 degrees only
not bare too much skin as in long sleeves only or anything with sleeves will do fine? I'll be doing pre-school for 3 months . . . in the well testing segment (DST/TCP) .. not quite sure what to expect yet smile.gif
