The NS grinder, (essentialy Eureka), lower end, Mignon/MCF and the lot has very very very bad retention. Sometimes my coffee taste weird because a chunk of old coffee decided to let loose into my PF.

A friend recently bought one for RM1.5k, but when he browsed around, ppl are offering him RM1.25k. He wanted the color RED so badly and so hastily, he went for the RM1.5k..err..

The HG-One is kewl notworthy.gif Apa machine are you using? LM ka?

The Baratza/Mahlkoning lower end do not peek my interest since, build is plastic, reviews are leaning towards the MCF/Mignon and the more complicated it is, the easier it will fail (essentially, 10 years also no problem la, takut2 nyia, but I prefer KISS). Though fully electronic controlled dosing at a cheap price.

My coffee journey sudah stop since the wifey put a big STOP sign on financing derr...Just saw a clearance sale for Saeco Synthia MSRP4999 at RM1990...I know the SuperAuto bane, but at times, it is so easyyyyyyyyy.....

I'm using a VBM Domobar.. Was thinking of a GS3 at first but the price.. Not approved by finance minister. But I might go for a Londinium 1 next time if my pocket permits.. Or an Elektra..

According to the world barista winner video, it's always a good practice to grind and throw away the 1st few gms of coffee that will eliminate retention issues in any grinder.
Some ppl say it's discontiued back in 09 but I still find them being made. Burr size change to be bigger vs older design.

I did that and no issues, sound wasteful but lady even ditch coffee which is sitting out for 10secs or so.

I use a hand made machine by mr Salvatore

Hello coffee lover,

I'm looking for Baratza Encore here in Malaysia, anyone knows where can I get it locally? I know i can easily find it in eBay, but i've confirmed that the power rating is not following out standard local power input. I'm afraid I need to get some clearence from Suruhanjaya Tenaga/Sirim and import tax that I have to pay. Thus, anyone who had experienced importing grinder from overseas specifically Baratza Encore, please chime in and share your experienced.

Thanks

I think you should check with Papa Palheta as they carry Baratzas. Importing an electronic coffee grinder is not advisable because of the tax. It's 30% of the price of the grinder and delivery charges. Crazy if compared to SG, it's only 10%..

I imported my manual grinder in and trust me.. Even if it's hand operated, the crazy tax still bled me dry. If you can source someone to get it in along with commercial machines, that'll be the best.

Thanks Mel for your reply, appreciated.

Let me share something, I'm on my search for a non-espresso grinder that can be used for french press, aeropress and maybe a pour-over soon. Based on the online research done, I've shorlisted encore as the best candidate in terms of usability, but the price is not very favourable since I've to include tax, power converter/transformer and super expensive shipping cost. My 2nd option is Nivona Cafegrano (rebadged as Capresso Infinity in the US), but it comes with mixed review on the net, and I can get it for RM400++ from local seller in Lelong. So, I'm asking all sifus here some opinion on which grinder (not limited to 2 models I've mentioned) should I choose. Budget should be less than 1K. Please bear that, I've already owned a Porlex as part of my setup, and mignon is on its way from Dankoff, solely for my espresso needs. Porlex is an excellent personal grinder for small batch, but not ideal for serving more than 2 cups.

No la.. The grinder was love at first sight.. Maybe because I really like the process of making my espresso. The reason why I'm considering a traditional lever machine is because I have full control in doing just that.

My wife is also limiting my finances now lol!

Haha, then I guess the superauto would fit your needs. For me, I normally wake up and have the machine warm up while I do my morning business. 30 mins time, have a cuppa and move out for the day..

This is my HG One with some mods:

30 mins of a cuppa to grind and extract wow.

I spend around 30 mins time to grind, extract, clean up the grinder, wash the cloth, wipe things down for 3 cups of coffee and 1 cup of steam milk for my kid.

Super Auto... U spend lot of time cleaning trust me. I use a Jura.
the nozzle come flying out, milk not hot..steam 1 cup of milk lucky 1 crazy clean up.. unlucky 3 crazy clean up each cup maybe need to change 2 sets of shirts while u at it.

if U use the automatic sucker U have to run the cleaner for like 10 mins and stuff what a pain plus milk is not streaming hot. cleaner is like usd$10-20 for a tiny bottle and I can burn thru them like water easily. filter is usd$20, I have to replace them monthly. if one using the tablets to clean its usd$20 for 3 mths, but cleaning takes ~1hr. have to do it at nite.

making coffee is fast but clean up is 10X longer than my current setup.
when it sucker blows up 2 times each time.. thats like 6 times each morning it will take more more than 45 mins plus it ruin your day.
when sucker blows, one need to clean up the frother too to make sure its not clog up.

not sure how many ppl enjoy warm milk splashing all over. helps to keep your table and floor real clean since U will be mopping so freq at least 2X in the morning. LOL. U get the feel the excitement too as u never knows when that thing will blows.

got rid of the sucker in 6mths.. too much cleaning work.
in office works great I dont steam milk and I just make coffee, always have clerk to clean.

the Saeco all china made, no getting those. dose very little coffee compare to jura. Saeco more quality issues, Jura more design issues. designed well to keep u hook using their cleaning supplies.

Wow.. that really sucks.. so what setup are you using now to avoid all these?
My setup is 30 mins to warm up, but that's for the whole day. Weighing, grinding, extracting and steaming milk is probably a minute or so each time. Cleaning the group head and PF, another 1 min max.. Grinder has no retention, don't have to clean up that often lol. But yeah.. a messy aftermath can be a real PITA..

I've tried looking around and it seems getting all of them together locally is quite difficult.. Maybe you can get in touch with Coffee Ritual and see? I see them listing the MCA-3 previously, and the coffee mill is available.. Latte shaker might have to buy online..

Sifus,

Based on my question on the grinder above, any recommendation and where to get it? If possible, I don't want to import anything from oversea, thus please recommend those that already available locally.

Thanks

Grinding and extraction etc just 1 min or so. Extraction usually 25-30secs. That's some fast manual action.
HG-one at that price I expect no retention issue. Over usd$1k on manual grinder I expect the best out from it. Maybe one day I get to own one, maybe just maybe.. Lol

My warm up on my salvatore (small) lever is like 10-15mins. I don't leave my machine on for entire day since I only drink in the morning. Grind to extract and stream milk maybe 2 min each time. On my NS mcf I clean weekly. Back flush weekly. The ability to stream crazy hot milk without aftermath is damn sweet.

That's really nice if you have a lever machine.. I'm wanting to try extraction based on pressure profiling. The 25-30 sec rule is just a guideline.. But I've tried 40 sec extraction to 28ml espresso with variable pressure.. Man, the drink was bright and light! How I wish I have a traditional lever or paddle shift machine...

I am just trying to est your time spend on grinding... I understand its a guide.

if U spend 40sec extracting and your grind and all just 30 secs or so to get 14-20gm of coffee thats even faster. ~60 rotation to do 16gm in below video is 30-40secs. U doing very fast when U est ~1min to do them all.

did U get the blind tumbler? no stock here but some store sell them but prices all inflated! those burrs are expensive! over $200. maybe in the future I find myself getting one.. not near.. maybe 3-5yrs.
