what do you mean by overflow?

if u mean water flowing back into the tank, then there is overflow.

the hang-on filter will have U-shape pipe to draw surface water
or the suction pipe have holes near water surface area to allow the water to flow in
i use dolphin A2000 for my quarantine tank, cost around 70bucks, boyu brand cheaper around 30-40

HOB filters? i don't use HOB.

my last marine tank was just the normal pump, no skimmer also. cheapskate setup but it was really well.

subject to what you keep inside your tank. if do regular water change and keep hardy fish & coral it should be fine
but if you plan to keep more elegant type of corals. is more complicated

10days, depens how you kick start your tank, some noneed so long.

just help a friend setup his tank last wk, already hosting fish now

just test your nitrite

you get water from LFS or your friend which already have establish tank when they do WC, the more you get the shorter the cycle.
or you get product like microbakter + biofuel from birghtwell, other brand like kent , DT also have their own solutions but does the same thing,
lastly you can add live rock which will bring along all kinds of creatures, can be good seed of corals or parasit also, depends on your luck.
your rock seems dead.

as for the white thing, maybe hydra coz algae normally have color pigment. anyhow just scrap it and suck it out.

frozen brine shrimp? don't watse it, keep for your fish to eat in future.
put something dead, dead fish, dead prawn, smelly & stinky to generate more ammonia
buy a botol of brightwell biofuel, put half cup into your tank, bakteria go hyperactive & replicate faster
use it regulary (especially when accidentally overfeed or reset some rock) good investment.

as for this china brand botol, neverseen b4, where u bought it?
need to check the content, make sure got non-pathogenic aerobic & anaerobic bakteria to do the following
ammonia (level 0) -> nitrite (level 0) -> nitrate (<20ppm)

its from a pet shop near my house.

here's the web:
http://www.tzong-yang.com.tw/en/proditem_d...l.php?itemid=68

the bottle says, develop bacteria colony to decompose ammonia, No2, hydrogen. not so specific like u mention.

Added on October 24, 2009, 1:45 amand btw, how much is one of the brightwell biofuel microbacter bottle?

yeah, pro tank keepers use Berlin method. just use the live rock for everything. natural style.

seems ok, noneed buy microbacter as it does the samething, biofuel on the other hand cost around 40bucks, can't remember actual coz bought it long time ago.

ya, most reefer nowadays incorporate certain berlin concept, berlin concept not just simply use live rock but rather the live rock you use have a lot of holes & crannies so water pass through very slow & low oksigen, so the bakteria can do their work. drill my rock b4 use & study the water flow.
but i don't use kalkwasser rather 3part dose with rowa phos to archieve what i want.

good that you doing some research. reefing is not much of how big is your tank or how expensive gadgets you have. rather than the learning curve, that's the enjoying part. thumbup.gif

maybe some corals, anemone and a few fishes.

if the bioload too high, then dont need corals. i guess it will be colorful enough if my live rock is covered with coralline algae.

you have shallow tank, keep assorted buttons, ricordea yuma & mushroom can be very nice, bioload low & very hardy.
nice coralline algae color depends on supplyment you dose.
