im kinda in a tight budget, i think i will pad my filter with some material.

i just stuffed a sponge and some bio balls into the 1st chamber of my filter, lowered the noise a little.

budget buy 2 type of sponge, PO4 removal & Active Carbon. Cut to fit your filter & slot in
reduce noise, you dun get yellorish color, smell & reduce unwanted algae grow.
is big pcs, replace new 1 every month. can last you for long time.

bio balls do more harm than good.

u need to clean it regulary, when u feed your fish, food stuck in it , your NO3 will shot up.
have a good skimmer to get rid of it better.

if your fish load is high, especially you keeping lionfish, grouper kind of species.
sand bed not thick enug etc than bioball in sump will help else don't use.

Hi guys,

I have a saltwater aquarium (4ft) that was given to me as a present about six months ago. I have a basic rock formation which is rather dull. It looks very much like dead sea rock if that is the proper term.

I was toying with the idea of having coral put in but what is the proper way of going about it? Surely its not as simple as dropping them into the tank?

Currently I have only fishes but I would consider adding a shrimp or two but what do they feed on? How will I know they will take to the aquarium?

I'm fairly new to all this but I have tried to make sure the aquarium is maintained properly. A guy comes over to clean the tank and change the salt water as well. Would there be more to do in the event I added live corals to the tank?

Thanks in advance for your help.

no, UV kills everything including zooplankton like pods etc,
which is important source of food for coral & fishy.

use only when seriously infected with parasit & want to sterilize it

T5 cheaper but the natural effect less, MH your electricity bill will shot up.
btw not all coral need bright light, some will melt under MH
some coral will not grow well under T5.
so there's no definate answer rather than what you plan to keep & off course your deep is your pocket

hi, that's cool, 4ft tank, maybe you can snap some photos and show us what you have first.
shrimp basically are scavenger, meaty food fall on to the ocean floor they will swept it clean.

the key is to be patient << quoted from someone in another marine forum.

maybe get more live rock and do a nice formation?

if u have an established system(which takes time), i dont think there will be much(of an increase) in chores.

subject to what you keep inside your tank. if do regular water change and keep hardy fish & coral it should be fine
but if you plan to keep more elegant type of corals. is more complicated
*
indeed. those take too much care already, so i didn't go into that.

lights, temperature and water movement - so much planning.
