Is it worth to bring the mx5021 for repair?
*
Let's just say they (Altec Lansing) no longer makes multimedia speakers of those quality anymore nowadays (most of their current speakers do not sound as good as before, quality has dropped quite a bit compared to yesteryears). That Altec Lansing MX5021 (along with FX6021) are considered top elites in their class range. The subwoofer is especially has very punchy bass (as it can do both "thumps" and "booms", much better than Edifier M3300SF which is mostly a thumper), which is why many owners were looking to have it repaired/restored to working state. Anyway its up to your decision whether to send for repair. As for the repair part, valid only for Klang Valley areas since I'm located in KL. Currently have quite an overload of repairs to complete, thus if anything else use the PM method for further details... sweat.gif

I notice a very big difference on my R1800 TIII with ADA-305 on gaming...... more clarity and more sound, like 3D. I can hear sound which my ADA-305 didn't emit. Good for gaming but music wise I still prefer MY ADA-305. Havent try on movies though.
That R1800TIII is considered HiFi quality thus sounds are much more detailed and clearer. My guess is that the ambient bass from the subwoofer gives that Altec Lansing speaker a bit more atmosphere to the music. Movies are also where subwoofers are good at... hmm.gif

Maybe I get Studio 8 for my tv speakers, can the tv output directly to the Studio 8?
*
Depends on what type of audio outputs are available your TV. The Edifier Studio 8 has multiple inputs ranging from analog stereo audio (RCA connectors) to digital audio (coaxial and optical SPDIF)... icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi guys, M3400 now is already out of stock. So I just bought a P3080M, is it ok compare with M3400?
*
Should be relatively same (due to having similar satellites) although there are some differences especially when it comes to subwoofer wattage (18WRMS on the M3400 versus 16WRMS on the P3080M). Anyway, how does it sound to your ears? Is it an upgrade/improvement compared to your previous speakers? hmm.gif

logitech z213 and edifier m1360 .
which one is better?

Should be Edifier M1360 for better sound quality. As for the Logitech Z213, the satellites can sound rather thin (as those drivers looks to be the same type of drivers as found in portable speaker systems)... icon_rolleyes.gif

hi sifus,

i've been very happy with my Logitech X-530 70 watts RMS 5.1 Black Speaker System which I've purchased since 2007.

They pack quite a power and has exceeded my expectations for a set of speakers.

However now in 2014, their time has come and some of the speakers sometimes do not make sound and I think the subwoofer is half dead.

I'm looking to replace them and they have set a pretty high benchmark.

If budget isn't a problem, what is a worthy upgrade to replace these babies?

Please do advise as I am alien to this and opinions of sifus will be put to good use. Thank you!

For under RM100, that Edifier M1360 would be one of the better choices. Actually got it cheap as faulty and repaired it myself (the fault was one of the TEA2025 amplifier I.Cs failed and bad output frequency stability ceramic capacitors). Since I repair lots of speakers (and audio hardware), was able to get to know them much better and compare their performances... brows.gif

May be some bad filter/smoothing capacitors especially at the power supply section... hmm.gif

For 5.1 multimedia speakers and budget isn't a problem, then you may want to take a look at Edifier S760D which has almost everything under the roof (including Dolby surround and DTS decoding)... icon_rolleyes.gif

Then just test them out with games, music and movies. And what was your previous audio equipment (if any)? unsure.gif

Here are some sound tests you can try. First off, the boring but simple frequency sweep test to see if your speakers have any frequency "holes" (missing regions of audio frequencies). Make sure all tone (bass and treble) controls or graphic equalizers (for the soundcard or integrated audio) are either disabled and/or set to flat/neutral for these tests... cool.gif

You can also check this channel: YouTube: Beeps, Chirps and Noise for multiple individual frequency tests as well as white, pink and brown noise test (recommended). Do note that the upper limit of high frequency hearing varies from person to person. Starting from 15kHz and onwards, most people may not hear it (especially of older ages). Those with good hearing may detect sounds up to 18kHz... wink.gif

Then there's the not so boring music test, and there are plenty of them especially on Youtube. Here is a sample that I've often used... brows.gif

And here's another favorite one alternatively used often... icon_idea.gif

You will find that the speakers are very clear without even the need to turn up any treble controls (or any high frequency enhancements). Can leave everything flat (on graphic equalizer settings of the soundcard or integrated audio) and just turn up that subwoofer bass dial... icon_rolleyes.gif

Of course Edifier R501 MK2 would be the pick. And for your information, that Logitech Z506 is noisy plus can be highly problematic when the internal switching power supply starts failing (as the internal power supply is actually underpowered)... hmm.gif

yeah man. clarity is top notch. i tried a few edifiers at the shops. p23080m has real good bass, but too bad the darn controls are stupidly located at the rear of the woofer. how can i access when the woofer is under table far away. lol...the flat speakers of m3300sf is so light that i could hang it using double sided tape. LOL brows.gif laugh.gif so far so good, not as bassy but okay. compared side by side, ear by ear to m3200, directly can detect the sound is more muddy compared to the 3300sf. i tried one vinfier or something too, around the same price range, man...it sounded too lousy to even justify the purchase.

oh yeah, i also tested the logitech z443 too, i love logitech, but not this time after compared to the m3300sf. too lack of clarity without the help of tweeter i guess. sad.gif
i miss my z5500. lol...and thanks for the recommendation bro.

Can someone give me a review for the Logitech Z506? They are at around RM369 retail, which is a pretty good price for 5.1 speakers. Please let me know if they do well for MOVIES and MUSIC. My main priority would be movies, though. I would love for powerful nice bass and great sound clarity? If that makes sense.. just a good cinematic experience.
Also please do comment on the build/material of the speakers.

If someone can recommend a better of 5.1 speakers for around RM400 let me know, looks like Edifier R501 Mk2 could be worth looking at as well, so I'd appreciate feedback on that as well. Anyone know how much those cost? biggrin.gif

As mentioned in another reply earlier, the Logitech Z506 have very noisy satellites (and tend to distort sounds). Additionally there are hints of heavy crosstalk between the satellites. Clarity is down the drain due to that noise and crosstalk. The main source of the noise is primarily from the internal power supply (can literally hear the shifting whine and buzz of the internal switching power supply). Furthermore the internal power supply is also underpowered given the total power output of all drivers (satellites and subwoofer). And when it starts to fail, literally most of the time its un-repairable and will require an entire power supply replacement (with an alternative higher wattage one as the original is underpowered)... wink.gif

Yes, that Edifier R501 MK2 would be the better pick/buy. And the price should be around RM400. Besides that it has a much larger 8 inch woofer (while the Logitech's woofer is pretty measly in comparison) thus better and more powerful bass as well... nod.gif

That Edifier R501 Mk2 is much better than the Logitech Z506, of course. Too much to mention here and besides can also check reviews such as this one: BCCHardware: Edifier R501 Speakers - Testing and Installation:. Anyway I have worked on one of those Logitech Z506 speakers (belonging to ammartok) during the course of my repair jobs thus that is the impression I get from those speakers. Many online reviewers (especially those on Youtube) fail to mention those noise (and crosstalk) issues. Again, you can find the same issues I've mentioned earlier here in this IMHO much more honest review: Techgage: Logitech Z506 5.1 Speakers Review – Test & Final Thoughts. You can also try Google "logitech z506 noisy" and see the numerous complaints about the noise issue... icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the links, I will definitely give them a look.

I'll scratch off the Z506 speakers from my list, and I'll probably look into getting the R501 Mk2 speakers soon.

Any places you'd recommend I'd be able to find them at a good price around Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya?

Also I have another question for you audiophiles.. As this is my first time looking into getting 5.1 speakers, I have no optimal home theater setup.
I'll probably use set them up on my desktop first, so plugging it into the motherboard's speaker jack (green) would be enough, right?
I have no sound card whatsoever, I'll just be plugging them directly into the rear jack of the motherboard, so should that be okay enough for a good experience?
Secondly, if I do hook these speakers up to a TV, all should be fine if I use the TV's audio jacks right..? I have no receiver etc
so basically I will be having a very basic setup, no extra hardware or anything alongside just the speakers themselves.

Even the customer reviews on Logitech's own website is showing the same noisy issues (some of them call it "static" or "wind" sounds) with those Z506s. The reviewers calls it "hiss" which is too kind already. That's because most amplifiers has some form of hiss which is the noise floor of the amplifier, however requires turning the volume all the way up to maximum with no audio signals and putting the speakers very close to the ears to even hear them. But with the Logitech Z506, the noise is very apparent right away even without the maximum volume and some distance away from the speakers. The actual sound is not hissing but more like high frequency whine and buzz (shifts between either whine and buzz depending on the input audio signal!), if listen carefully up close. Thus that is how badly it can distort the sounds... shakehead.gif

Please check your motherboard manual. Quite often the other audio ports (for line input and microphone input) can double as surround outputs. If your motherboard integrated audio has 5.1 surround feature then just plug into your motherboard integrated audio outputs and see. Nowadays most motherboard integrated audio solutions are pretty adequate in terms of audio clarity and features. You will also need to set the integrated audio's control panel to use 5.1 channel surround mode... wink.gif
