Looking for a basic setup for my room.

Budget: RM200-300
Use: Movies, music, and gaming, basically everything. More importantly towards movies, and 2nd, music. Gaming not so much, but it would be nice too if I could get some nice quality for gaming.

Speakers will be connected to my PC. (to the back speaker input of my motherboard, I don't have any soundcard)

Speakers that caught my eye are the Edifier M1380, and HCS2330. Is the HCS2330 good for movies?

Could you guys please differentiate what are the differences of the two speakers for? How will I benefit from the external amplifier that I get with the Edifier HCS2330? What can I use the external amplifier for?
Or is it just something to control the aspects of the speaker? (bass, etc)
I also have headphones (Audio Technica ATH-PRO5MK2) if that matters.

Thanks! Looking forward for some help here from you pros biggrin.gif

Well I'm not a pro but still try laugh.gif
Two sets you have chosen are quite different from price wise and also performance wise.

You have mentioned you'll be using primarily for movies  so any set with remote will benefit you as you won't have to get up every time to adjust

M1380 is entry level speaker

Hcs2330 is little improved c2 it has external amplifier plus remote

Try yourself what suits you thumbup.gif

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I just noticed that the M1380 is entry level. I am going to disregard that one.

Currently, I'm looking at the HCS2330. Though the C3 is also said to be better than it, but it is more expensive. Personally if I am comparing the C3 to the HCS2330, the C3 looks much more premium, making the HCS2330 look cheap. I will think about choosing between the two.

Any idea if these 2 speakers will work great when it comes to movies?

Thanks!

Can someone give me a review for the Logitech Z506? They are at around RM369 retail, which is a pretty good price for 5.1 speakers. Please let me know if they do well for MOVIES and MUSIC. My main priority would be movies, though. I would love for powerful nice bass and great sound clarity? If that makes sense.. just a good cinematic experience.
Also please do comment on the build/material of the speakers.

If someone can recommend a better of 5.1 speakers for around RM400 let me know, looks like Edifier R501 Mk2 could be worth looking at as well, so I'd appreciate feedback on that as well. Anyone know how much those cost? biggrin.gif

As mentioned in another reply earlier, the Logitech Z506 have very noisy satellites (and tend to distort sounds). Additionally there are hints of heavy crosstalk between the satellites. Clarity is down the drain due to that noise and crosstalk. The main source of the noise is primarily from the internal power supply (can literally hear the shifting whine and buzz of the internal switching power supply). Furthermore the internal power supply is also underpowered given the total power output of all drivers (satellites and subwoofer). And when it starts to fail, literally most of the time its un-repairable and will require an entire power supply replacement (with an alternative higher wattage one as the original is underpowered)... wink.gif

Yes, that Edifier R501 MK2 would be the better pick/buy. And the price should be around RM400. Besides that it has a much larger 8 inch woofer (while the Logitech's woofer is pretty measly in comparison) thus better and more powerful bass as well... nod.gif

TY for the feedback, I guess the R501 Mk2 is a better pick wink.gif

Sound wise how is it for movies and music, if you have any experience with it before.

That Edifier R501 Mk2 is much better than the Logitech Z506, of course. Too much to mention here and besides can also check reviews such as this one: BCCHardware: Edifier R501 Speakers - Testing and Installation:. Anyway I have worked on one of those Logitech Z506 speakers (belonging to ammartok) during the course of my repair jobs thus that is the impression I get from those speakers. Many online reviewers (especially those on Youtube) fail to mention those noise (and crosstalk) issues. Again, you can find the same issues I've mentioned earlier here in this IMHO much more honest review: Techgage: Logitech Z506 5.1 Speakers Review – Test & Final Thoughts. You can also try Google "logitech z506 noisy" and see the numerous complaints about the noise issue... icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the links, I will definitely give them a look.

I'll scratch off the Z506 speakers from my list, and I'll probably look into getting the R501 Mk2 speakers soon.

Any places you'd recommend I'd be able to find them at a good price around Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya?

Also I have another question for you audiophiles.. As this is my first time looking into getting 5.1 speakers, I have no optimal home theater setup.
I'll probably use set them up on my desktop first, so plugging it into the motherboard's speaker jack (green) would be enough, right?
I have no sound card whatsoever, I'll just be plugging them directly into the rear jack of the motherboard, so should that be okay enough for a good experience?
Secondly, if I do hook these speakers up to a TV, all should be fine if I use the TV's audio jacks right..? I have no receiver etc
so basically I will be having a very basic setup, no extra hardware or anything alongside just the speakers themselves.

So basically I was just wondering.. is the Edifier R501 Mk2 classified as a lower end 5.1 speaker? For movies should it be better if let's say I compare them to the Edifier C3 which are 2.1 speakers but on the higher end side..
If I bump my budget up to RM500 would I be able to get much better 5.1 speakers? As in the compared to RM400+ R501 Mk2.
