Travelling to UK is no fun at all now...

Bad news for budget travellers to UK, they only allow one bag on board. Even if it's your laptop bag or your handbag --> that's the bag! Others should be checked in, even tho you've most valuables in them. Result: you need to pay for excess luggage.

For continental European travel, a laptop bag is a laptop bag, and hand-carry bag is another item. You can carry both onboard, provided that nothing liquid is inside it.

Intercontinental European travel is easier and worthier. They won't even check your passport at immigration (they check only upon check in), except for Switzerland.

And yes, airport security is tighter in UK than anywhere else in Europe... I spoke to one of the security officers in Duesseldorf, they said that they hate the UK policy so much now.

Yup. Usually there's a lot of single travellers around. So far no problem with me joining a tour ("tumpang" tour trip). It's great too, you get to make new friends. smile.gif

Guys need some advice here.

I haven't been travelling overseas since they impose the 'no liquid' regulation. So I was wondering, will it be ok if I bring aboard a small bottle of shampoo and face wash? I'm going overseas for only a few days, so I don't see the need to buy a new shampoo when I reach there.

Will they consficate the shampoo? I'm also planning to buy some perfume from overseas as well. Will there be a problem when I bring it back? It's liquid afterall...

bringing back is not a problem. the problem is when u are there.

dont be mistaken about the no liquid protocol. u are allowed to check in and only limit to 100ml for hand carry. liquid exceeding must be scanned unless u buy mineral water/liquor/wine, then it must be sealed in a see thru plastic type bag with the receipt in a smaller compartment in that see thru bag. i wish i took a pic for u but i tore mine up.
when u handcarry items such as cream/lighter/etcetcetc please declare em by revealing them in a plastic bag given to u upon check in.

dont la handcarry shampoo. for what ? check it in. bring lighter in your hand carry enough , thats if u smoke lol.
if u on international flight, they supply u water in airports and on flight so u have no reason to bring a bottle anyway. there's a water fountain near the smoking lounge in KLIA anyway. actually 2.

One question here:

First time traveling to Europe during winter. What kind of boots / shoes should I get for walking around? What brand? Where can I get them in KL?

Thanks.

Just make sure you get thick socks. Buy the most comfortable walking shoes.

In my opinion, the best way to experience a culture is to do it the backpacker way. It's fine to stay in hotels and all but try to experience as much of the local culture as possible. Walking around is a great way to discover a place.

Camera's are essential la for travelling. Haha all the memories got to be captured. And it's pretty handy to have a travel book guide (Lonely Planet is good)

Here's my six take (with respect to money) if you're travelling to Indonesia. For other articles on Germany and Japan, check out our Travels section here. smile.gif

1) Wise Luggage Choice

We were surprised to find how willing the locals were at the airports to help load our luggages into the van. However, my father was quick to point out to all of us, NOT to allow them to do so. These helpers come at a cost. They are not helpful for no reason, and they will persistently push you for payment after helping you with your luggages, and insist that it is not adequate with the weight that they had lifted.

Therefore, it is highly recommended to use a roller luggage when you are travelling. They are much more convenient to carry around and therefore eliminates the need for assistance.

2) Know Your Currency Convertion Factor

Firstly, it is very important to shop around for the best conversion rate whenever you get your Rupiah. Personal Money in their November 2007 issue highlighted several Bureau de Change that offers the best rates and how to get the most out of your money for your perusal.

Secondly, now that you have your Rupiah, identify the convertion factor. When we exchanged our RM for Rp, Rp 1 000 000 = RM 364. Therefore, the convertion factor was 1000000/364, which is about 2747.25. Let's round it up to 2750. So, whenever you go shopping and if you need a quick check on how much the item is worth in Malaysia, simply pop your calculator, and divide the X amount of Rupiah by the conversion factor, which in this case is 2750.

For example, a shirt priced at Rp89,500. Divide that by 2750, and you'll know that it costs about RM 32.55

3) Be Nice To Your Tour Guide & Miscellaneous Spending

What's the 'liquid' policy for flying to Thai, I mean the shampoo, skincare products & liquid makeups etc? Some told me you just need to put them in the plastic bag they provided and you can carry them onboard. But a friend told me they will be confiscated unless we check them in.

IMPLEMENTATION OF LAG(LIQUIDS, AEROSOLS, GELS)

ALL INTERNATIONAL DEPARTING FLIGHTS OUT OF MALAYSIA irregardless transiting or chartered flights. All liquids, gels or aerosols containers of not more than 100ml EACH shall be required to be carried in one standard re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity not exceeding 1 liter. Which means you can carry one few 100ml separate transparent bottles but NOT exceeding 1lit altogether. The plastic bag must be presented separately from your hand luggage and other items such as coats, jackets or lap tops at the security x-ray checkpoint.

All liquids, gels or aerosols purchased from Airport Shops/Duty Free in the security restricted areas of the terminal on the day of travel. Items must be placed in standard Security Tamper-Evident Bags (STEBs) with receipt attached to it as Proof of Purchase.

Passengers must carry only small quantities of liquids, gels or aerosols items that they want to bring into the aircraft cabin using a small size, transparent and re-sealable plastic bag measuring, 20.5 cm by 20.5 cm, 25 cm by 15 cm or 21 cm by 17.5 cm or get one at the airport.Other extra liquids, gels or aerosols should be kept in their checked in baggage.

Medicines, baby food/milk and special dietary requirement required on board during the flight, are allowed (must be verified by airport security) and do not need to be carried in the transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.

And I can precise they REALLY checked on the liquid policy in all the airports I have been recently (China, Europe, India).

I have seen people having to leave behind bottles of wine, shampoo or to quickly drink their tea in front of the custom.

Do not take any risk and just put everything in the checkin, you do not need Shampoo and co inside the plane. Ladies, your make up will be gone or all dried up because of the pressurization, do not bother about it before your get your bag back on the other side.

Do not think you can talk your way out of it, they seems to be really really particular about this regulation.

If you need medication and stuff in the plane, you better bring a letter from your doctor or something stating this is needed for the trip itself. Cough sirop will not do.
