rice cooker?how on earth you fit it into bag?

for me the way I save when I go travel

in the morning always get a bottle of mineral water, chocolate bars and get croissant to eat in the morning.

if possible find a cheap place that serve great breakfast.eat as much as possible.

for transport, always utilized public transport. I always check ahead if there's 3 days transport for x prices

and for public attraction, the same thing.some city has like 10 attraction for a price and sometimes it even inclusive of public transport.

and I used hotwire and whatever programs that can keep track of any possible cut off in hotels rate.

or even better, I stayed with my friends.

Rice cooker to big-lah..why all the hassle, Just packed any instant cup noodles & boil it inside the hotel room..I've been doing this for those hotels without breakfast & far from eateries for ages...

Another way I hv think off but din try yet is get those small induction cooker & also a small iron bowl & it will fit nicely inside backpack..light & easy to carry...Well I'm still looking for this small tiny induction cooker...can't find anywhere yet..or if hv too pricey compare to thise RM150+ at hypermarket/jusco

I see. yeah I just have a small backpack or roller bag. Travel by myself or a group of friends for a week. Not much space for anything else big.

We prefer to discover the local fare instead of eating maggie. The most we did is buy bread and peanut butter. That's it.

Anyway, depending on where you choose to eat, you don't have to lug out around all this equipment or maggie.

In the states, I get a full breakfast at a cheap diner or cafe for around 4 dollar.

Coffee, double hashbrown with cheese and onion, toast and eggs.

Isn't that cheap for 4 dollars?

when u go travelling it's a must to try out their local food.. but then with our currency so low.. eating seems like very expensive.. a lot of ppl spend the most on eating other than hotel rooms..

we normally rent a car and drive around the whole country when we go for holiday.. so it's no problem with big luggage. laugh.gif

never tried bringing toaster oven before.. my dad say wanna bring microwave next time travel.. rclxub.gif

imo, eating maggie everyday for a month can do damage to ur health.. unsure.gif

when my mom first heard from her friend to bring rice cooker for travel.. she also kena shock.. they have been traveling for ages and never even think about bringing rice cooker along.. and now the rice cooker is the first thing they pack.. bring a boiler too.. some cheaper hotel/motel dun have boiler also.. icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm going to China for 4++ months. I had some problem regarding the money.

If my parents want to bank in money for me to China, how is the money will be transferred to China? I understand that I might need a bank account there, but can any local banks here in Malaysia transfer the money to the banks in China? Please help notworthy.gif

well you can use your current bank card to draw the money but of course there's charges for it.

check your bank if they have a deal with any bank in china. if so there's no charge whatsoever.

i know that when i'm in germany and deustche bank have a deal with bank of america so no charge for withdrawing my money.

i know there's a Bank of China in KL (Plaza OSK). you might want to ask if a direct deposit in Malaysia Ringgit will convert to RMB for withdrawal when you're in China.
or what I do usually is have my family in Malaysia wire money (in USD or EUROs) from Maybank or Standard Chartered to my bank account in China. Bank of China is very efficient as far as receiving foreign wires is concerned. when you confirm the wire transfer is in your account, go ahead and have it converted into RMB.

there are tons of Bank of China branches all over the China, so it's quite convenient.

I am the kind of guy who gets hungry in the middle of the night and most of the time, the service apartment I stay at only provides a refrigerator and an electric water kettle. I've grown tired of having cup noodles but after a few years of traveling, I found a few more appetizing alternatives:

1. More of the "just add water" cuisine: I normally steer away from cup noodles because dehydrated corn bits are not appetizing. However, there are other varieties, and depending on where you go, you can find things like instant porridge, or honey flavoured nestum.

Preparation: Heat up water in kettle. Add to cup.

2. Pasta: So when I'm craving for real cooked food, I boil some angel hair pasta in the water kettle. Now do remember to keep an eye on the kettle at ALL times because it will over flow. When the bubbles come up, just switch off the kettle, let the pasta sit in the hot water until it is cooked. I specifically mentioned ANGEL HAIR pasta because its thinner and easier to cook than spaghetti or other noodles.

Preparation: Boil angel hair in kettle. Drain water. Mix in sauce (I use Prego) while noodles are still hot. Eat.

3. Fresh fruits: Easy to peel ones like bananas, oranges, apples... you get the idea. Coconuts are absolutely out of the question.

Preparation: Wash. Bite.

4. The cold cut sandwich: Cold cuts are ready to eat. I always check the packaging if it is because I'm dubious about cold meats. Examples of cold cuts: Bologna, smoked or plain turkey ham, etc. Groceries will have this in the chiller section next to the dairy products.

Preparation: You can put your cold cuts straight on your bread, but I like mine warm so I boil the cut in the water kettle till it is nice and hot. I like to use whole wheat breads or french baguettes. Slice that up with my trusty swiss knife, throw on the cold cuts with some olives, fresh lettuce, cheese and mustard. Eat.

Just remember: Its easier to clean the kettle right after you use it.

If you have other ideas, I'd love to read about them here. smile.gif

I don't think I can quite do that with my SLR setup. It, along with my tripod, sticks out like a sore thumb LOL. I haven't run into trouble so far yet carrying it around with my travels luckily smile.gif *touch wood*

Speaking about that, I think I'll put up a little post about travel photography (with regards to SLRs) later tongue.gif

I carry my tripod in my checked-in luggage. It weighs about 0.5kg as it is a lightweight Sony model.

I carry 2-5x of 16GB SDHC cards depending on length of trip (1 ultra-fast Class 6 card, the rest are the cheapest I can find - Class 4). My new DSLR is a 12mp camera, and at max reso and highest JPG quality, each 16GB card can fit about 2200 pics. So far I've never even come close to filling up the cards. But with this new camera, I noticed I tend to take many multiple shots especially of scenery/buildings (I have it set at 2.5-4.5fps continuous shots), as this allows me to pick the best pic of the lot when I want to email it out or post it online to FB or elsewhere.

I also carry 10mp point & shoot waterproof camera that uses SDHC cards, so my 2-5 cards are used for both cameras.
