If your PC keep crashing, you should check the windows logs for more info, it records everything that happened to the system.
and make sure to disable automatic reboot when blue screen, so you can find out the BSOD codes code before it reboots.

Sign of bad hdd/ssd are: random blue screen, read/write file extremely slow, the hdd/ssd disappear without warning.
and of course you can see a lot of warning/error related to "disk" appear on the windows log.

Just rechecked the registry, the value is already set to 0. So, I believe AHCI has been set correctly.
*
So you should be able to boot using AHCI mode , choose in your bios. I believe previously booting in this mode will cause it to restart the second it reaches the windows boot logo.

Yup, the registry is for AHCI. Then theoretically it should be able to boot in AHCI (in BIOS) as well.

In Windows 7 environment:
It's always recommended to to do fresh installation in IDE mode and subsequently enable AHCI in regsitry then in BIOS.

Depending on setup, for desktop normally I recommend it to be done after installation of OS into SSD. For laptop, AHCI is set as default in BIOS.

Windows 7 already include AHCI driver, so you can directly install in AHCI mode and not messing around with registry setting.

i do it right after i plug in my ssd (no OS yet) into my pc. just go do bios and enable it, after that reboot, you will see a screen where the AHCI drivers are loaded (diff mobo may vary). then i only install the OS

and again for those who wanna use/change to Win 8, the registry value is StorAHCI

Question from newbie in ssd:

1. Is it common these days to buy a new notebook and instantly replace with SSD ?

2. The original harddisk comes inside the notebook has a hidden partition where it stores the COMPLETE windows/drivers/softwares for re-installation purpose in the event when u need to perform fresh installation of Windows.
After we replace it with SSD and clone it, will this partition also bulat-bulat exist in the new SSD ??

@chinkw1,

For me, I replaced them straight away. You can feel hell lot of different experience after going to SSD.

Do not clone the existing HD, reinstall the OS on the SSD. No point wasting your precious space with unneeded stuff.

Fresh install.

Install directly from CD, reactivate your Windows using the original key, install drivers and you're done.

Btw, you wont have your hidden partition anymore because it's on your old HDD.

You don't need it, just bunch of crappy utilities inside. biggrin.gif

But nowadays, when we buy new notebook, they no longer give CD.
They only put the stuffs in the hidden partition in the HD...sad.gif

Check if your notebook comes with installation DVD, if not, check if you could create an installation DVD from the recovery software. Most recovery software has someway to create installation DVD. If else failed, you may want to download the OS image file from Microsoft server, you may need to use phone-in to do reactivation.
