Anyone here using new MBA 2012 but encounter slow shutdown speed? Like around 10-15sec? This is so significant if compared to previous model which shuts in 2-3sec. Not sure is hardware or OS X issue.

hi guys, I want to ask you all about MBA vs MBP

For now, I'm using a near 5 years old laptop (no desktop at home)

Currently, I'm thinking of switch over to Mac

however I'm torn apart for either go for MBA or MBP

My estimated usage of Mac are as below:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Judging from my demand, it think MBA is for me

4GB ram shouldn't be a problem for me as well as the processor

but I'm worried on the usage of space on the 128GB Flash Drive

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

so I'm not sure which 1 I should choose, the 11" (128GB SSD) or 13" version

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

lastly, the only reason I will go for MBP is that for the same money, it seems I can get better specs in which I probably wont utilised it (I'm not sure on this) and the panel screen

so which I should I choose?

thanks for the advice in advance

Hi All Sifu,

I am new to mac and recently just bought a macbook air 11 with 64GB.

I would like to installed windows 7 into my MBA using VMware, the space and 2GB RAM is sufficient for me to do that?

I'm wondering does it cost a lot if I go for an upgrade to expand my ssd to 128 and increase to 4GB. Worthy?

You can upgrade your MBA's SSD to 128GB but your RAM is non-upgradeable. You can run VMware with 2GB RAM but the performance would not be satisfactory and your Mac OS will probably utilize heavily your swap file.

This is a tough choice for a lot of people as well. You'll probably get more confused when everyone gives their opinion.

I suggest you to visit the local store, hold and feel the various MBAs (or MBPs). Then you'd know for sure.

My opinion:
1. 64GB may be too small for storing much files but if you have the 13" MBA, then you can utilize the SD slot for keeping some of your files. My preference would be to choose 128GB. Remember that SSD's performance degrades as the drive fills up.
2. 4GB of RAM may be sufficient now but the RAM is non upgradeable on the MBA and I'm in the opinion, that if possible, max out the RAM supported which is 8GB.
3. The screen size is a personal preference but just remember that you get 7 hours of battery life on the 13", a higher resolution screen as well as a SD slot.

I hope the above helps but bottom line is - go visit the store and play with the device for as long as you like.

I suspect that it would take another 6-8 months before we see any form of refresh.

Apple is definitely looking to kill the Macbook Pro somewhere down the line.

Weather it's before the iMac or after is hard to say.

But any form of new desktop or laptop product announcement is most likely 6-8 months away.

What happened? drop it?

No. I accidentally dropped a plug on it. Then it left a tiny scratch. Not too visible but quite ugly when looking from a near distance. If only I can turn back time. cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

Btw guys, is it possible to remove those scratches on the MacBook? Does using those scratch removers for cars work?

Are there screen protectors for RDMBP?

I don't know if my question sounds silly or not, but the screen is prone to fingerprint marks, so just wondering if it exists and if anyone uses it.

MBP spec?

Added on June 28, 2012, 9:34 pmBut regardless of spec, it should be at least 4GB RAM.
Won't freeze that fast, try to check is it any app that eats your ram?

Try "Activity Centre"

6-8months eh? okay den i would consider the iMac. im currently using c2d 15' mbp. its been about 3 years already, and being in the design field i kinda need something more updated to handle the rendering and editing needs. hence im now considering either an iMac or the new mbp. but i think the iMac seems to be the better option as its more capable. i could use my old mbp den for portability.

you guys agree? hmm.gif

i don't think it would be that long, you should wait till next month's Mountain Lion launch.
they could launch together
Benchmarks already appeared for the next iMac.

I am having the c2d 15 mbp too. Same age like yours. But i am planning my next mac is going to be mba 11 inch.. Haa.i think it can handle the works i am doing especially video editing. The upgradeable to 8GB RAM is the most hype to see from MBA.

Well, not appropriate for painting works anyway due to screen size which i have to face it everyday.

After these years, MBP is darn heavy whenever i traveling back and forth from hometown..

The "feather" weight and powerful processor on MBA seems to beyond my MBP spec. But the built-in GPU card and Big Screen which makes me think twice to sell off my MBP.

the GPU card is already a few years out-dated but it still can manage most latest games that i interested. So, it don't really becomes an obsolete machine in my daily usage.

From 15inch downgrade to 11inch screen... Hmmm..

Anyone doing this and no regret?

If got a car to carry MBP is perfectly fine.. but by walking... Ewww...

talk bout damage... i got my mbp logic board replaced twice. That's one of the ideas to get rid of something already out of warranty.

Thanks for the retina model recommendation. if last time, my money spent on c2d can get the highest spec of R. model..haha

After these years survey, research and study on apple product....i won't go for their newly release product..

RMBP 15" still heavier than 13" MBA, right?

I walk around with my Retina Display MacBook Pro, what's the big deal? I NEVER drive into KL, and always utilize public transport. LRT, bus, and when I commute between KLCC and Pavilion, I WALK between them using the pedestrian walkway connecting KLCC and Pavilion.

People have been spoiled with driving cars these days that the idea of walking is alien to them. Compared to New Yorkers who walk by blocks or cycle in Manhattan as their method of commute.

I moved from 11" MBA, to the Retina Display MBP. The weight is increased 100%, but for the amount of processing power I carry in the Retina Display MBP, there is no substitute out there. You want light MBA, you sacrifice processing power and performance.

MBA specs are not bad. But it really comes down to which of these two is your top priority: performance or lightweight.
