As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Either way the season finishes, at least it will show on how much an experienced midfielder is needed. I think the gap between the young with potentials and the veteran is too wide in midfield. In other areas, it is well filled.

in other match, Bolton is leading against Stoke, if the results won't change, in one stadium, MC won the league, QPR is relegated.

It's not over yet.

Pathetic stuff from Barton. Pathetic. He kicks out at opposition players as he reacts to the sending off, and has to be restled from the pitch by his own coaches. His players are trying to have nothing to do with him. He might just have played a major part in the relegation of his own team. Moron.

GOAL........................

Added on May 13, 2012, 11:29 pmGOAL!! Well, my laptop has nearly frozen such is the frenzied excitement at my end - QPR have gone ahead!! Jamie Mackie loops in, unmarked, to the back post to head in Armand Traore's cross from the left wing. A superb headed finish that could have just thrown a spanner and a half in the title race. Manchester City 1-2 QPR.

Manchester City fans are silenced at the moment, stunned that their team - who looked fso in control and confident in the first half - are struggling to equalise against a team with one less man than them.

The QPR goal looks like a parked bus and so it should. At the moment they are set to become the first team to win at the Etihad Stadium in the league this season with the worst away form in the division. It's a cliche, I know, but you just can not script this stuff.

21 attempts the Blues have had this afternoon. Tevez could be about to come off for Balotelli who is being given tactical instructions on the sidelines. The Argentine has not had a very good game today and it might be the right decision to remove him from play.

The ball rebounded to the Welshman who hit a splendid volley but the Belgian was up and tipped the ball over the bar. Great stuff.

Balotelli whips a shot in from a position where one ought to be crossing, but it's a good one, and Kenny's parry just avoids the waiting feet of City players in the QPR box.

Greg Stobart from the Etihad Stadium: "Never, ever have I seen anything like this. Sergio Aguero wins the title for Manchester City deep into added time, smashing home at the near-post after picking up a loose ball in the penalty area. Two goals in stoppage time and the title goes to the blue side of Manchester. The players and supporters here went absolutely insane."

The end! Manchester City 3-2 QPR. A truly magnificent end to the Premier League season. A Joey Barton red card. A Hoops fightback. The two Blues stoppage time goals to steal the title from the hands of Manchester United.

let's not take anything from them, alright?

their win, even though i was kinda disappointed, deep inside me,i kinda relieved since

1-at least City is winning it,not the pool
2-this season is the most exiting seasons since the inception of EPL
3-QPR saved laugh.gif

so congratulation to them. despite they are supposedly our rival,i despise the pool more then them, and there are actually Man City player that i really like, such as aguero, kompany, hart, etc.

next season!

Chill out, Fergie need some time to renovate the trophy room, so he pinjam the trophy to our next door neighbor because its the nearest place without paying for storeroom. He'll want it back next season.

A little birdie told me that someone hacked into Tony Fernandez's Maybank account and found a transfer of $100M came in. Could it be from team Al Mubarak? tongue.gif

Cheer up guys there's always next season. United lost by GOAL DIFFERENCES. And just bear with the trolls out there whose team have won nothing this season whistling.gif

well, as the saying goes: Once in a Blue moon, so enjoy the title (I doubt how many of the "visitors" tonight are truly City fans) while you can, United will be battling to take it back next season

This feeling hurts. Its like we've conceded defeat prior to the game, get shown so much glimmers of hope, actually believing we had it, and then getting it taken off us in the cruelest possible manner, right at the end. I would rather have seen them smash 10 past QPR tbh. But then, good fight. we went all the way. for a club in the process of finding ourselves, losing out on GD isn't that bad. Besides, 89 points is a massive haul, enuff to run away with the title in most seasons. Well done, City, but the switch in power in Manchester is not yet complete. Can't wait for the new season.

When Chelsea won their title under Mourinho for the first time, I feared that Utd will never came back to power but of course, we always comes back.

Please I wish Utd have a magic doctor so our best player is always available.

My thoughts exactly. I dared to dream and believe towards the 90th minute. It felt so possible. Then it got snatched away just like that in a matter of minutes.

Well, now it's over, congratulations to City on the league win. They deserved it no more than we do.

Blue moon may be rising, but the Reds are still marching on. So enjoy the trophy while it lasts. We got a new keeper and all, and we still manage to take it to the final whistle.

...for now, tahan telinga tahan hati. The ABUs are out!!!

>Reason Why Manchester United Lost Premier League 2011-2012 Title<

Take a rest guys. They said we're the worst Man United team ever, but yet they win us in final 2min by goal difference (if extra time = 3min, we sure win tongue.gif). It takes half a billion to beat worst Man United team, i couldn't imagine how many billions they need to beat our best Man United Team

As usual, we'll bounce back. Glory Glory Man United! notworthy.gif

Congratulation to Manchester City and their "true fans" around here, they won it they deserve it. Last 5 minutes put more prove that they have stronger mentality this season than before, fight back from 8 points behind us to fight back to turn the result against QPR.

This is exactly not the worst United team. They fought for 89 points, which is incredible, with some youngsters just came in this season, with cruel injuries, with mental setback suffered from UCL and Europa League exit. The lads deserve some credits even though they didn't win any trophies. They will come back stronger. I bet they've learned many valuable experiences this season which will be really helpful for them to grow as a footballer.

Well, I wish Giggsy and Scholesy will stay at the team until next season to help out the youngsters, of course not as in playing week in week out. Well, make your peace with this loss and move on. They did great comeback at the second half of the season with great help by Scholesy, but slipped later at very last of the season. Hope the lads won't suffer major injury during Euro.

Glory Glory Manchester United.

As they said, you learn more in defeat than in victory. Especially to the young players who maybe thought they can just walk into a winning team like United and collect medals without putting their best performance week in week out. I hope this season lesson will build up their mentality for the league and more importantly, for the europe games.

Honestly United didn't deserve to win the title because they lack of decisive mentality to kill off games and score more goals. The goal difference defeat surely will come back and haunt them where they didn't score more goals and kill off game like Everton at home. grumble.gif

If we won it we deserve it, if they won it they deserve it, there's no other way to put it.

Playing if-games, if we were defeated 1-2 instead of 1-6 against City at home, both of Manchester teams will have exactly same stats at the table
Play 38, Win 28, Draw 5, Lose 5, Goal 89, Conceded 29

One of the best season I've ever experienced, even though didn't turn out to have good ending.

Every team will be defeated at some point, the difference is: a weak team will falter and stumble and never be able to live up the winning expectation; but a great team will react positively and challenge the highest honour with dignity and pride. cool2.gif

good league campaign.. normally 89pts will win us the title.. 1-6 thrashing are the different, but i'll always remember the 4-4 draw..

City raising the bar and they deserved the title. they'll getting stronger if they retain Mancini, team harmony, and get rid trouble magneto (Balotelli).. a couple of good signing will make them more equip to defend their title.

poor campaign overall, by our high standard.. we need at least a couple of top CM's, and one more forward, basically to replace Scholes, Giggs and Berbatov. Berbatov, Owen will be gone and probably Pogba too.. Anderson, Cleverley and Fletcher's fitness are always a question marks. our defense will better with fit-again Vidic, with DDG, Smalling, Jones, Evans, the twin will be one year maturer..

the players did their best, but thats not good enough.. we will be bounce. Glory Glory Man Utd..

What a season? QPR almost help us,lolz i guess money does buy you goals. I hope next season we can keep up with them. I am hoping for a good news from SAF,we need new blood,Kagawa looks interesting. I love to see him at OT. We fend off Chelsea why not MC? Our team can do it.

credits to city, they deserve d title more than us. to come back from 8 points gap & win it down d wire shows they have that never say die mentality we had. we only have ourselves to blame, but take into account that we just replaced VDS, losin our captain for d whole season, some injuries here & there but yet finished d season with same points as d champions whose spent multi-millions, i think d lads deserve some credits too. down but not out, we shall rise again next season. chin up ppl... flex.gif

exactly. we were plagued with injuries throughout the season sad.gif if this keep repeating next season, we better set to get the best medical team as our main transfer target. maybe Barca's? tongue.gif

something comes to mind when we are discussin about injuries > our squad depth. yeah, we can't really buy world class players to be on d bench & get d call only when our 1st 11 players injured, but losin Fletcher for d whole season, while missin anderson & cleverley on & off doesn't really help. thank goodness Carrick stayed fit for most of d season, imagine if we need to depend solely on Scholes to marshal our CM week in & week out... sweat.gif

also, i noticed that we are lacked of sense of urgency this season, sometimes we tend to sit back & relax when havin a small lead. when Rooney is not on song & frustrated, there is no one stand out & lead d team. we need a game winner pretty badly imo. sad.gif

I believe we did our very best, just lack reinforcements in certain areas. You could notice certain players were out of steam towards the end at Sunderland, but still held on to the lead nevertheless. It was a long season and we ended up with the same points with the champions. Just a few adjustments and we will fight for the title next season, blinding our opponents with the power of Gingham tongue.gif

To finish level on points with a sugar daddy team (easily could have bought all the best players in the world and double/triple their wages)..... that's quite an achievement! Spending only less than 20mil in a season with this achievement is quite remarkable.... Congrats to the Citizen and credit to them.... the competition is getting more and more competitive now... imagine if City is still the old City.... the title could have been won long ago..... can't depends on Chelsea who squad is old.... can't depends on stingy Arsenal who trophy cabinet remains unused for last 7 years.... not too mention flop king kenny squad who spent more than 100mil and finished a laughable 8th...

hopefully losing this title will be a wake up call to all the players and spurs them to be more efficient and ruthless in each game(also will make SAF to add couple of world class players in).
forever united!

I do think that united's squad is good enough, we lost the title through goal difference, winning the same points as City. We did that with a secondary back four that is constantly changing.

the squad is decent enough (except the unfortunate injury crisis), but there's area that do need strengthening in order for the team to challenge those top dog

Vida already missed pre season. so I hope he can make it before the kick off. I hope Anderson will be lucky next season. It's about time for him to have full season without long term injury

Clyne transfer seems imminent. Berba most likely leaving. No words about Owen.

I think we just short a couple signings to return to the best

d league is gettin more competitive & we definitely need to improve. gonna be very interestin when d transfer window is once opened again...  icon_idea.gif

yeah... you are right, we really need to improve ourselves.... i just feel frustrated with many Liverpool and Arsenal fans who keep mocking us losing the title in the FB when they themselves can't compete with the best.....
Seriously we need to replace scholes and giggs.... there were good servants from the last decade or so... but i think it's time to let the younger generation to take over.... very excited about our young players.... jones, smalling, cleverly, welbeck

alright, so here's my assessment:

GK: sorted
LB: Evra clearly needs someone to challenge the spot (Clyne perhaps?)
CB: with Evans, Smalling, Rio, Vidic, and Jones, we're good to go
RB: Rafael should get the nod and make this position his

winger: Valencia, Nani, Young, Giggs (Park i think he will leave)
midfield: on paper Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Cleverley and Scholes are decent pool of players, bu 3 out of 5 are "doubtful" at best with their injury record, so we have to stop gambling at that, especially Fletcher...

striker: with Berba, and possibly Macheda and Owen leaving, this part is thinning out, so 1 more backup striker should be fine

all in all, we will finally have to address the problem at the midfield this summer, and we should really really aim to NOT be so dependent on Giggs and Scholes anymore

IIRC Anderson played his best football (this season) when Cleverley and Welbeck were on the field together.. from the track records, the chances all they 3 could fit and play together are rare. Anderson wasnt really clicked with other CMs, unless we play 3 CMs.

brutally honest, ive got no hope for them (Anderson and Cleverley) to be our backbone for us next season.. they are still young though, time are on their side. some top CM /CAM like Xavi, Lampard, Senna etc bloomed late..

Giggs maybe can play the odd games here and there as wingers but certainly we can no longer include him in the main list for wingers, that leaves us with only Nani, Valencia & Young for a full season.

Anderson really has to stay fit and step up his performance and be consistent. This season is already his 5th seasons with us but he has not really show much consistency in his performances.

If we trust the rumours then yes, Fabio could be heading to Benfica next season for loan deal.

on the team...well I dont know if Fabio heading out on loan will be good for us, good for him no doubt...Evra may be a fit player but he can still be strucked by injuries, just look at Vida...Is Clyne even as good as Fabio? Dont think so...Not confirmed if he is even coming...

I think if SAF is to bring a midfielder in, someone will go..likely Anderson? Berba and Owen leaving should still be fine, since we have Roo, Welbeck, Chicha and Macheda returning

Berbatov is leaving...Owen may be, so this lead 2 slots for backup strikers. Currently we have Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez....plus Macheda. So i think will be enough

as for wingers, we have Nani, Valencia and Young to play with.. rumours that SAF in the market for another winger, so that's complete even without new signing as Park (if he still with us) can be as cover.

for CM, Fletcher return date not confirmed, Anderson fitness always in stake, Cleverley hopefully can fit. Cannot always depends on aging Scholes and Giggs cuz they are not stay there long. This left Carrick the only fit...so CM is the big problems need to solve.

as for centre back...we have Jones, Smalling, Vidic, Rio and Evans...looking at that numbers are really enough

for full back...Fabio loan out full season, left only Evra and Rafael although we know that Jones and Smalling sometimes can play as RB but I prefer them to play at centre instead of rotating them as CB and RB. LB need a good player to challenge Evra cuz this season I saw a bit of declining form from Evra.

we need at least:

compulsory: 1 backup LB, 1-2 center midfield
optional: 1 winger, 1 striker

its not the time to talk about value anymore i reckon (for this coming transfer period), City no doubt will keep on chucking money around again, and that's funny, other teams SHOULD be worry about City coz they can't compete with them on the market, while they have to be scared that City will come and raid their squad...just ask Arsenal fans, they are the only few who didn't troll this thread (i think?)

Yup. with the status of "League Champion", they will spends millions again for the team (as per Mancini, they are still "not good enough")....I know they will be another title challenge team next season.

They will of cos raid all the available good players in the market. I think they will bid whichever players other teams are bidding.

They will splash the money for fun. FA Cup last season, this season League champ, I reckon the boss want CL next season (like how Abramovich wet dream about).

as for the bold part, i reckon another backup RB (natural RB, not make shift RB)

the big difference between City's big spending and our so called big spending is

they can afford to spend 40M on 1 player, pay him 150k weekly wage, and if he fails to deliver, they can just let him rot in the reserve, while they continue to chuck ANOTHER 40M to another player until they find the right mix, WE CAN'T DO THAT

Clyne had played both LB and RB for his current club, so he will be enough for cover i think

good league campaign.. normally 89pts will win us the title..

Ya, MU still not good enough. MU lost to ManC twice, 1-6 and 0-1 in 2012 season.
Time for SAF to buy new players while maturing the current "babes".

something comes to mind when we are discussin about injuries > our squad depth. yeah, we can't really buy world class players to be on d bench & get d call only when our 1st 11 players injured, but losin Fletcher for d whole season, while missin anderson & cleverley on & off doesn't really help. thank goodness Carrick stayed fit for most of d season, imagine if we need to depend solely on Scholes to marshal our CM week in & week out...  sweat.gif

also, i noticed that we are lacked of sense of urgency this season, sometimes we tend to sit back & relax when havin a small lead. when Rooney is not on song & frustrated, there is no one stand out & lead d team. we need a game winner pretty badly imo. sad.gif

Yes, I agree. Somebody in the mould of Keano who motivate the other players and having a never-say-die attitude. Or some one in the mould of Cantonna, unpredictable but fit like a glove in the team order where everyone respect him for his contribution.

MU back four was constantly changing due to injuries to players. But still did good compared with the other teams (except ManC)

Hehehe. With all the money spent. All you can do is to get the same point and only beat United by goal difference. Malu betul tongue.gif

BTW congrats to them. As for United, all we need to do is to purchase a central midfielder. We are lucky got beaten by them by only goal difference with addition of some recently promoted young players and 2-3 oldies. whistling.gif

QUOTE(dlct87 @ May 14 2012, 02:56 PM)
so the season is over, who's your Player of the Year for United this season?

for me:
1. Carrick
2. Rooney
3. Ferdinand

for Youth (23 and below):
1. Welbeck
2. Evans
3. DDG
*
De Gea and Evans are close call. Both started badly but I chose De Gea as he bounce back after being written off by medias and even from United fans.

For senior, it will be Carrick. United are in mess without Carrick. He is the stability on the midfield. Rooney also on his best form again but I'm more leaning toward Carrick.

The young squad and new blood in this season will grow up next season. I wished more and more including media buying the hype power shift in manchester.

Maybe, it is really a time to sign another "continental" player. someone who can compliment with Carrick in the midfield (ala Scholes) or who can replace him without disrupting United flow. Ando-Cleverley early this season shows something refreshing in the midfield. But injury hampering this dynamic duo
