Dear All,

What type of helmet you all use for road cycling?
Am considering getting a good one in the like of a Giro, Lazer, Bell, Specialized.
Appreciate your feedback and where can I get these at a good price in KL.
Thanks all.

Prevail is quite pricy.
Prefer Giro, Lazer or even Met, nice designs and good protection as well.
If specialized, propero II maybe ok, design a bit like prevail s-works.

you have to put in mind that helmets are a protection based equipment... looks and design comes 2nd for me, personally.. functionality is my 2nd priority like ventilation and the strap buckles usability...

also... helmets tend to have a lifetime and you have to remember that whatever helmet you get... it can as easily be thrown into the bin after taking a hit as there might be cracking and the integrity of the helmet will be compromised... helmets that are way too expensive is what i would try to stay off...

it's the one thing on your bike that is guaranteed to change over time whether you gatal or it gets broken first....

why the sudden urge to go 25c? i have spoken to most people on 25c and they think it's shit (weight concerns and stuff)... hence, the lack of 25c in the local market...

This is what's im worried about. The over enthusiastic newbies !

Basically from what i gathered, the crucial part is Batu Arang down hill. Last year, there's people falls when they downhill too fast and it's wet.

Inter-State have about 400 cyclists and it's quite scary to ride in huge peloton and it's added more scary when there's newbies in group swing left and right...

oh yeah, share some my experience during inter-state. The Singaporeans cyclist always shout loud "HOLE" whenever they see 1. be it big 1 or small 1. this makes us some panic and looks for hole, where's the hole that Singaporean guy shout! really panic caused by them....

While we alway uses hand signal when in peloton, we only shout hole when there's really big one in front, too late to give signal.

just hope for enjoyable ride this Sunday!

900+++ of cyclists... i'm just cant brain it...

you can't blame them as shouting is the fastest and sure fire way to make people aware of any road hazards... put yourself in their shoes and you will understand (especially in the case of potholes or road obstruction) on why you rely on shout rather than pointing.... furthermore, some people don't concentrate and they are just yapping away with their buddies on the road... they won't see hand signals...

when you meet a pothole... assuming you are in the middle of the peloton with no one warning you... the pothole would come up fast and almost immediately appearing out of nowhere after the rider in front goes through it... you would want to forewarn other riders (and thank you for that) but at the same time you might also not want to take your hands of the bars to maneuver the road obstruction... can't blame them or you for that fact..

furthermore, hand signals are only good for day rides where you can clearly see the rider pointing on hazards and it doesn't work for cases like "Car" or "Bike" coming from behind or during night time.. so, shouting is the way to go... just, learn to control your warnings instead of roaring that scares people...

this is off no use blush.gif

mainly.. the lead guy is the most important as he will start everyone following in line on an evasive maneuver... if he doesn't do his job well... and leave everyone in his wake to start panicking.. riders will bump into riders (left side rider go right, and right side rider go left) and hit the deck even if they don't hit the road hazards...

signalling is a collective effort of the group and everyone must try to do their part to convey the message... if someone behind doesn't hear the warning and go down... they might start bringing down other riders behind which is what they want to avoid in the first place....

downhills...general rule of thumb... keep a safe distance... at least 3 to 5 bike lengths if the rest of the group allows... or just ride at the back... less nervous and always look at the road ahead, way further in front of the rider ahead of you... if the rider in front of you takes the wrong line and you follow his line to the dot... down goes you if he goes down...

"expert" descenders tailing you... let them pass.. or they come up and overlap your wheels and stuff... kaputz... the unexpected and brake grabby guys too... let them go and gain a gap or ride like hell to pass and gap them....

I'm gonna try genting climb this wknd..not the full climb but maybe try to ride from goh tong sky way and up to the top..9km only..if it isn't that hard prolly gonna try twice..

Any tips?

So don't buy 2nd hand helmet than if it have a lifespan. Better get a new one..it might not be the ultimate life saviour but at least it gonna protect your head a bit..my friend crashed and cracked his helmet..if he didn't wore one, it gonna be a diff case tongue.gif

i'll explain sempah first...

user posted image

1st part - sempah (pondok police) to first round about, about 4++ KMs if my estimation is right

from sempah junction, don't take the road under the bridge back down to mcdonalds.. that is another 1.5KM back up from McD... take the right turn at the t-junction (workshop) instead into the road where cars are coming in (opposing traffic) just becareful not to run into cars coming in...

ride on from there till the first pondok... the pondok part is very demoralizing as you realize it is shit steep visually after you pass the overhead bridge... (that is just the begining)....in actual fact, it is not... last i measured is just around 10-12% gradient on that part...

first right turn after the pondok gives quite little space on the road shoulder... after 2 or so gentle left curves.. comes the first hair pin left... this is really shit steep... something in excess of 18% gradient but very very short... if there is no cars on that day... you can try the outside lane (risky maneuver) else, stick on inside line and power your way up...

the road after that would be fairly easy after that and quite gentle for another 1kilo or so till you reach the plantation place where you get another left hairpin again... similarly steep... after that, it continues to be quite steep for a fair bit more until about 500 meters before the round-about...

2nd part - downhill and gohtong jaya

after the roundabout... it is like a piece of flatland (maybe because of the torturing you experience from the bottom, that slope becomes easy).... then hooray... 1.5KM of downhill...just beware of the cars zooming their way down...

after that... the road is fairly easy at that point as you are at the plateau / valley heading up to genting highlands... another 2 or 3KM of riding to gohtong jaya big round about...

ohh... you meant from gohtong to the top of genting?

sorry, misunderstood...

the 2nd part of genting climb is actually much harder at the bottom as it is a long slog and from the graph you can see that there are lot of red and yellow zones...

i never managed to climb the full thing from home... i usually just manage to get to the temple and i give up at that point... once you reach the temple.. it is shit hard from that part... and there is no return point after that... which explains my decision to turn back on temple...

and, on weekends.. i think the pondok police might not let you pass due to that part being more dangerous...

i don't think you should be re-welding anything on the bike... some parts like crank arm is forged for strength...and unless you have friends who works in machining shops... no chance, you will be able to re-thread the crank arm... much better you hunt for 2nd parts in bicyclebuysell...

but if frame has rusted... hard to salvage... that is unless you want to repair it cosmetically only for keeping...

Haha thx bro..that is definitely helpful as I planned to start from HOA somewhere at the end of the year.

Got some works there and just for a fun wanna test climb that 9km part..let see if I can handle until the top since it's a very short one.. tongue.gif

Looking at the graph seems like its gonna be a hell of a climb.
