just went jamming with my band last night and saw all of my members buying themselves new guitars n equipments n when i look at back at my drums, sad la. so i've decided to get myself a new set in months to come. but because im no drum-tech-geek i got NO CLUE what's good in the market so i need all u sifu's here to advice me on this. here's the spec i sorta required:
1. 2 toms, 2 floor toms, 2 bass drums, 1 snare, 2 cymbals, 1 ride, 1 china (dont mind more cymbals)
2. budget rm8k
3. the drum will be set in a studio room of about 15 ft x 45 ft, wrapped with light DIY sound proofing. it's set along with all the guitars, amps, singers' huge speakers etc. by explaining all this, what i meant is i dont want a set of drums like of the DW's where its more suited for live performances; not in a room/indoors and definitely not cymbals like most of Zildjian's where its also more suited for wide open space live performances.
4. my type of genre will be mostly rock/metal. more to modern metal like lamb of god, mudvayne, suicide silence etc instead of metallica.
5. do advice me if i should just using a single bass drum equipped with double pedal or 2 bass drums. i have a DW3000 double pedal n it didnt feel right, n i cant seem to align it properly on my bass drum. figured single pedal will be easier maintenance after all.
6. i think most of u experienced sifus got the idea la. pls intro me some of the good brands/models n i'll check on the reviews.
thanx a million!
1 & 2. Hey mate. I've got exactly the kit you want.

Its a mid-level kit, RM4k plus at Bentleys. Its a Ludwig Epic in natural-black burst lacquer finish. I've only used it for a session once, and its been in boxes ever since. I sold the snare to Jimmy of Tempered Mental/Oh Chentaku a few years back (he's also a Ludwig fan l) ) So there isn't a snare with the set, BUT I can sort that out for you cause I can get you any snare for cheaper than retail. I'm not selling it with cymbals, but you can get them on the market here used. Budget 8k? No problem. My kit is in showroom condition, I'll sell it to you for RM2800 nego.

If you buy from me, I'll also get you discounts on anything else you wanna grab, including heads, hardware and anything else (even for your bandmates).
3. I don't think there are drums that are particularly FOR playing outdoors "like DWs". In fact, DWs are some of the best kits in and out of the studio. I've played on a DW kit for a session I did late last year in a studio, and it sounded like what you'd expect a well-tuned DW to sound like. Amazing.

Again, about the cymbals, I'm not a big Zildjian fan (I'm a major Sabian aficionado though), however, most of them can be used and ARE used in the studio as well. The A Custom series was specifically designed for use in the studio.
4. Alright. Rock on. HAHAHA.
5. Personally, I've never been comfortable playing with two bass drums. I can understand those who do though.

For me, the hassle of having to lug around two bass drums to shows (when you don't have anyone else to do it for you) just doesn't make sense. I'm using a Yamaha double pedal now, and I used to have a pair of Iron Cobras. Never had trouble with them. Sturdy, and very durable, with great feel as well. Alignment is just something you've got to work with.

6. Cymbals, I'd recommend Sabian. I've been using them since I started playing drums, I've worked my way up the lines, and I'm using a mixed AAX/HHX setup at the moment that serves my playing well.

Hmm, how about Meinls and Paiste? I don't see quite a number of people in the forum using these 2 brands no?
Meinl and Paiste aren't that big in Malaysia due to lack of promotion.

You don't have drummers using those brands come down here to do clinics, etc. Bentley seems to just focus on Zildjian, and leave Paiste alone.
I do like a few Meinl cymbals and plenty of Paiste ones, though. The Meinl MB10s are pretty nice for metal stuff (that's the only context in which I've played them), and the Paiste 2002s are the only B8s that I've liked playing. HAHA.
Anyway, not many setups being posted up recently. Here's one from a session I did last Friday. I picked up where I last left off with switching my kits around, and I find playing in this setup rather comfortable with two floor toms, and that's about it. I didn't bring along my AAX and AA crashes dues to the amount of gear I had to lug around (including mics and MIDI equipment) so I used the house cymbals to complement my HHX hats and crash as well as my AAX ride.

The kit is a Ludwig Element in black, 14' and 16' toms, 14x6.5 snare, and a 20x20 kick drum I think, and of course, I used my trusty Evans heads. EMAD Coated for bass batter, Hydraulics on the toms, and Power Centre Reverse Dot on the snare. The mics used were Shure 57 overheads. Aesthetically, I guess the kit could have looked a little nicer, but I didn't bring all my hardware this time round, and the house kit didn't have many long/boom stands, so nevermind that. I'm using my Yamaha direct drive doubles on the bass. And of course, my Heartbeat Isaac Miranda sticks
