Search for some info on Djing on the net........ I found most of my stuff there. Download some videos of Pro DJs doing their stuff and learn a few moves..... finally, get a couple of books and instructional tapes on DJing...... I didn't take any course or anything, but I managed to get along fine.

If you're paying for a teacher...... you can get a medium budget DJ setup already..... get some friends who HAS proper skills and his own gear. If you don't, mix around in clubs and stuff and try to be an apprentice. A DJ course in KL costs about RM2900 for a few months. My entire setup costs about RM1500. Think about that.

But there's really 2 schools of DJing... the Club DJ, and the Hip-Hop DJ....

Dance DJs have an excellent ear for timing, intonations and most of all, taste. They can mix and blend one music to another perfectly, matches the beats perfectly and able to jump from one song to another without the audience knowing.

Hip-Hop DJs..... all technical skills. Scratching, cross-fader thumping, whikedy-whacking their way through records like no-one's business and be a total bad-ass doing it at the same time. Needs to know how to manipulate the song and pull out every trick in the book.

Any type of Dj needs to KNOW both schools of DJing, but PERFORM to their best interest. I went for a DJ Jazzy Jeff concert and MAN, his beat-matching skills is AMAZING and I went to see this club DJ pull offsome WHACK moves on the turntables.....

Know what kind of DJ you want to be, then do some of your own research first like I said. Then, get a budget down. Remember, your equiptment isn't going to be cheap if you want a reliable one. Whatever you do.... DON'T BUY A BELT-DRIVE TURNTABLE. Get a direct drive one. You'll thank me later. A decent setup costs about RM2000, including a good mixer, 2 turntables, a decent headphone, and good speakers. Don't use your PC speakers unless they are really high-end. Also, you have to invest in good wires, cartradges and don't forget..... the records! Building a good collection is expensive. Record shops in KL are selling about 80 bucks a record.... not sure where to find in Melaka though. My advice? Try to get a DJ starter kit. I'm using the Numark Battle Pack. I probably would want to change the mixer, but other then that, it's a bargain for about RM 1500. I already have Alesis speakers so, no need for new speakers on my end.

Not sure what else to say man..... if you have the cash, of course you can go for the dual Technics 1200s, a Rane Mixer, Technics headphones, and a pair of Alesis speakers... *drool*

Not a prob. Taking time to learn DJing is a loooong hard road. Even if you have a teacher... you're still going to have to learn alot on your own. No real short cut man..... sorry you have to hear that.... but that's the truth

Get a budget down and see what you can work with. A full DJ setup can be costly and is a real investment.... decide if DJing is REALLY for you and give it a go

Turntables are using Vinyl Records.
CD Players are..... well.... CD players.

Since you want to be a hip-hop DJ, you gotta go with Vinyl. In order to manipulate the sounds that you want (ie. scratching and stuff like that), there's no better way then on Vinyl Records. Sure, there are newer CD players that can scratch (like the higher end Numarks) but those costs about 4K for EACH player. The lower end models (like the Pioneers) so called "scratch-mode" just doesn't cut it if you're a heavy-duty scratcher.

I'm not saying that you CAN'T use a CD player to scratch... but for your budget, you best stick to Vinyl and build a good record collection. Like I said, go for a Numark or Stanton starter pack and get a decent pair of speakers... it SHOULD be around the 2000 mark, brand new. With the rest of the cash, invest in some books and start your record collection. Call up Sinamex (+603 2142 5657) and check if they have any Starter Packs for sale.

Becareful on second-hand stuff though. Make sure you get a Motor-Drive turntable and check the condition BEFORE you buy. Make sure you get new heads and cartradges and slip mats if you're buying second hand. If you see a Belt-Drive turntable on the market..... don't do it. It's just not worth the headache.

Ummm..... Bass guitars require an amplifier. A DJ setup requires just speakers.... what are the diff???

Ah.

Amplifiers "amplifies" the sound from the instrument. ie: something to jack into. A speaker? Well speakers just project the sound from a source..... ie: an output.....

Anybody else can help me out??

QUOTE
I Saw in the forum u snice like a pro DJ ,
I like to ask about the how about the DZ1200 from technics
how much it cost ? and is this good for a Beginner ?

DZ1200 is a digital turntable..... meaning, it is a CD player but with the ability to "scratch" the Discs via a disc platter at the top. I tried it when it first came out in the US, and it's a very good piece of equiptment. the sound quality is good, and the disc manipulation is almost as good as a vinyl. But it comes with a VERY hefty price tag. US$ 1200 for a single unit. If you're using two, that comes to US$ 2400, that comes to almost RM 9000!!! And that's not including the mixer, the headphones and speakers. Sure, you might save on your record collection, but there are other ways to overcome that. More on that later.

But if you're a beginner, I STRONGLY recommend learning using Vinyl. Any good DJ should start off with the knowledge of Vinyl before they proceed to anything else. It's the basic foundation of DJing really. If you're a Party DJ that just wants to mix songs, use a Laptop with some DJ software like PCDJ or Traktor. But if you're a dance club DJ, almost always you have to use the equiptment that the club provides, and they are usually Vinyl turntables...... mostly likely Technics MK2-1200. They will have CD players, most likely Pioneer DJ CD players like the CDJ-1000.

If you want to use Vinyl and use your existing collection, I would recommend using either Stanton's Final Scratch 2.0 or PCDJ Scratch. They are both special vinyl discs that you connect (via the mixer) to your laptop, which will play back Mp3s that are stored on your computer. More info about Final Scratch 2.0 here: http://www.stantondj.com/v2/fs/index.asp and PCDJ Scratch here: www.pcdj.com/Products/Scratch.asp

In fact, I'm saving up for Final Scratch 2.0 at this very moment. It's a big investment (costs about RM 2000, or US$ 500), but I will save a boat load on my record collection AND have the luxury of using vinyl at the same time.

Don't think you can ever replicate the feel of Vinyl "virtually"..... sure... there is Virtual Turntables or Traktor...... But you really can't "scratch" well on a mouse and keyboard....

DJ beginner? 2 turntables and a mixer.
That's the basic. Read the previous post on what you should get.

Drum looping machines, Samplers, Keyboards (or controllers) are more for the "musician" DJ.... ie. creating their own songs via digital instruments.

Stop watching those Linkin Park videos and start watching DJ Jazzy Jeff!

wat is final Scratch

FinalScratch® is the ultimate way for DJs to combine today's digital technology with the analog control of the past. By using FinalScratch with your existing turntables or CD player and mixer, you can control and manipulate digital audio files (WAV, MP3, etc.) the same way you always have-using your hands to cue, mix and scratch with the exact response and feel of real vinyl.

Actually, I'm using the Numark Battle Pack!!!
Like I said, bought it for RM1500!!!

Final Scratch is a great tool if you want to save on your record collection, but I strongly suggest getting a How-To DJ book that comes with 2 vinyls to practise.

If not, go to a record shop (there's a couple behind Bukit Bintang, behind Lot 10) and get a "Breaks" Vinyl and ask if they have any vinyl's with special FX or speeches.... you really have to ask around. It's going to set you back about RM80 bucks a Vinyl, so be prepared to spend cash.

Another option besides the Final Scratch is the PCDJ scratch. All it comes with is the software and 2 special vinyls. The rest, you have to use a PC soundcard that has 2 input/output or use 2 sound cards. For example, use the built in soundcard on your motherboard + a PCI Soundblaster card. The PCDJ Scratch will set you back about 1500, compared to the Final Scratch that costs 2500. But I find Final Scratch more repliable, stable and also it comes with the ScratchAmp, which means you just hook it up via Firewire or USB2.0. No soundcard configurations whatsoever.

Bought it from Sinamax

Ok.... you need to disc so you can continuously play your music throughout your set. Like I said, for club DJs, one disc will be playing while the other disc is being cued up. When the DJ manages to match the beats of both songs (By listening through the headphones on the Cued disc, which of course must be muted through the main output), the DJ uses the crossfader on the mixer to "fade" between the two songs, creating an almost seemless music track. The DJ then replaces the disc that WAS playing with another Cued disc and repeats the process.

A Hip-Hop DJ might work in a couple of ways. IF they are using 2 of the same disc, they would again play and cue one. They will usually cue a solo or space between which is what we call a "break". Normally, I like to cue up drum breaks during a song. Sometimes it lasts only a few seconds, so what you do is you cue up the exact same place on the other disc and quickly switch to the other track, rewind the FIRST disc back to the start, crossfade BACK to the first, rewind the SECOND disc back, crossfade again..... you get what I mean??

And of course, there's the scratching method. What I'll do, is I'll play a beat (can be a full song or just part of it) and I'll cue up a Sound FX track, maybe a line of dialog or a certain note and will manipulate the disc to keep repeating the track over and over again; ie. scratching. The crossfader is used to cut out the "backscratch" sound (The reveral sound the vinyl makes when you pull the record back), so it sounds like a quick cut of that sound FX.

Will post up a sample next day of some simple scratch techniques.

Those are the stylus (ie: The needle) that is alreayd pre-mounted onto the heads of your tone-arm. That way, you don't have to install it yourself and configurate it. It's already done out of the box.

I haven't read much reviews about the DJ Lab, but Stanton has a reputation of providing top-notch products at resonable price.
The T-60 Turntables are quite good though...
I'm not too keen on the "pop" styling of their new turntables, but whatever floats your boat man.

Find out the price first. It's quite hard to get Stanton products in KL. Trust me. I tried. Sinamex offered last time, but they didn't have the ones I wanted. I had to go down to Singapore to check out Stantons..... and even that have to pay the import duty tax.

Ok.... time to put my Elite tag to use.....

If you're not sure what turntables and mixer you are getting, it's best if you go to some of the DJ Products website (Numark, Technics, Stanton and Vestex are the big 4) and check out what they are offering..... take note of the one you like and find a distributor in Malaysia and get a price quote from them.

I can't help you if all you know is "made in china".... And for 3k a player you get get 2 Technics 1200 (the de-facto standard for any vinyl DJ) and a Rane mixer (Rane's are rediculously expensive but awsome built, quality and features. DJ Hahn of Linkin Park uses Ranes and Technics BTW) for about 10k also.

Check back some of the earlier posts about the budget packages that you can get. Again, Numark and Stanton makes some great starter packs costing about 2500 with the 2 turntables, mixer, headphones, cartradges, slip mats.... everything you really need (except for the speakers).

Yes. Call up Sinamex (I posted the number on a previous post) and ask them if they still sell the Numark battle pak or a Stanton scratch pak. If not, ask what kind of DJ packs they offer.

Well, that's the number they gave me. Will double check back for you guys again.

And the vinyls, if you go behind Lot 10, there are 2 shops selling records. One is for DJs (like club mix and hip-hop), the other selling second hand old records.

"Going to a DJ-ing school is probably the easiest and cheapest way to learn."

F THAT!!!!!

Cheapest way is to buy your own set, buy a few books and learn from experience!!!!

Hi there guys,

I have a set of American DJ turntables but they are partially spoilt. The whole metal thing bounces up and down so touching it even with minor force will bounce the needle to another place of the vinyl. Where can I get it fixed in KL? I need a new pair of needles too.

Lastly, I am looking to buy a set of CDJs. Any idea what the cheapest pair cost?

Probably the Pioneer line of CDJs. The CDJ-100S costs RM1,399 each. If you want, they offer a CDJ set (Called The Groove Box) which includes 2 CDJ-100s, the DJM-300-S mixer (which costs RM1,399 on it's own) and a Pioneer headphone which costs RM3,999.

And about your turntables, you can probably get it fixed at the high-end hi-fi shop in 1 Utama.

If you're a small club DJ or just mixing music at parties..... honestly, I'd prefer a laptop setup any day. Get your whole MP3 collection on there and you can mix and match without worrying about finding that one disc.

Last time I DJ'd at a friends place using a laptop, he was hooked up to a WiFi broadband..... so I was mixing tunes at the party and people came up with requests, so I just download them on the spot, and started queing it up on the next song.... awsome party that one....

But if you already HAVE a large collection on Vinyl and you play Pro at Clubs, then Turntables are the only way to go..... and if you're a hip-hop DJ.... don't even THINK of using a laptop.

BTW.... I pretty much depend on PCDJ FX software..... so far the most stable and reliable DJ mixing software on the market.

i have to agree with ya on hip hop dj using da vinyl tho there's some of them using cd tho but then again ya can't beat the true sratch and warm sounds on the vinyl. btw what software were you using on that party. i plan to head towards the digital technology like what dj superstar sasha did.

I've been longing to learn DJing. My question is:
I suppose the vinyls will cost bomb. How about just a final scratch and a computer with tonnes of song? It will do right huh? I'm thinking if I were to get those turntables, I gotta spend alot on those vinyls.

Oh ya, one question. What is time-coded vinyl or CD?

A Time-Coded Vinyl (or CD) is a special designed Disc where the only thing you'll hear is white noise. But when it's played back through a computer, it will reinterpreate that as your Mp3s. The "time" is where the position of the disc, and the position of your song will sync. You can find a demo of the system here: http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/medi...ideo/700408.wmv

And don't think that the Final Scratch System is cheap. Expect to pay upwards of 3000 ringgit. And besides, you will need at least SOME understanding of how vinyl works before you start DJing. Add that to the cost of a beginners DJ setup (which is about 1700) and you're already looking at close to 5 grand for a "Digital" setup.

Invest in a "Teach Yourself DJing" that comes with Vinyl for you to practise on before you invest in the Final Scratch system. Once you have done that, go to a vinyl shop and purchase some Vinys to help you get started. Ask the shop owner what vinyls you should get to get you started. Some breakbeats if you're a Hip-hop/Scratch/Battle DJ or some nice grooves if you're a Club DJ.

And if you ARE a club DJ..... why not experiment with PCDJ FX first? Get to know how to mix and match beats and music together before you start on the vinyl.....

and to B4ss.... I haven't used Ableton Live (I assume that's what you're refering to). I checked it up, and it looks like a Sequencer to me. I prefer to use Reason 3.0 and Adobe's Audition to make and record my tracks. I used to use Cubase, but I find Audition easier to master.

No... I didn't mean in any sarcastic way.... just that you are finding for yourself what makes a good DJ and stuff like that....
Heck, when I started out...... I wanted all of DJ Hahn (of Linkin Park) stuff! MUST have a Rane mixer..... Must have a Technics 1200 (actually........ the Technics 1200 is the De Facto standard of ANY giging DJ)....... But then finally discovered that I should develop the skills first and start from there.....

Although that's totaly the opposite when it comes to guitar..... :Þ

Sorry if I offended you or anything...... but I meant that you should just explore what is out there, rather then just sticking to your idols.....

I'm not a big fan of the CD-Js.... mainly I feel that the budget ones doesn't offer the speed and timing of the Vinyls...... but that's just my opinion.

the CHEAPEST option I can find so far is the Piooner Groove Box set.... It comes with 2 CDJ-100s players, the DJM-300S mixer and a set of headphones.....all for the grand total of RM3999. Yes. That's the cheapest I can find so far..... There are other brands, but Pioneer CD-Js are reputably one of the better and cheaper ones (especially the CDJ-100s). Anything below the Pioneer, and your playing will start to suffer..... Slow load times, not enough Cue points, slow search speeds... The CDJ-100s are probably the benchmark......

Now.... You compare that with buying an Acer Travelmate 3633 (Costs RM2199), Pump up an extra 512 of Ram (RM150, Kingston DDR2), Get an Audigy 2zs Laptop soundcard (should be RM355, last time I checked), And maybe Western Digital 60gig laptop HDD with enclosure (about RM330) for a grand total of RM3034 before discount..... For a thousand bucks LESS, you get a laptop that can perform the same task AND you don't have to carry around your entire CD collection PLUS your DJ setup....... and if you're gigging, it's sooooooo much easier to carry around a laptop instead.......

Think about that........

like I say man... depends on What kind of DJ you want to be. If you're the kind that wants to play at friend's parties or family events, carrying around alot of cd's and equiptment isn't smart.

But if you want to go pro and play at clubs, then you should get Started on CD-J's. Personally. if you wanted to go pro... should start on turntables already... but that's just me.

don't rush into anything. take your time, talk to pro dj's and weigh your options... bottomline... it's your decision. I'm just giving you friendly advice.

You alter the speed of the song.... Using turntables, you can manually rotate the vinyl to get the speed you want or adjust the speed from the controls. A CD-J will only have to adjust via the controls....

The problem with speed altering, is that you will get a different key, because it's slower or faster.... so Pro DJs are pros because they can get it matching perfectly.

Yes. You still need to buy Stanton's Final Scratch or PCDJ's PCDJ Scratch.

All the battle pack comes with is 2 turntables, a Mixer, Headphones, Pre-Assembled needle & heads and slipmats..... That's it. No vinyl, no records..... nothing. You'll have to hunt for the records or the hardware yourself.

for PCDJ scratch, it's slightly cheaper at 1500, but you'll need to use 2 sound cards....

You need two sound cards..... one for each turntable, or channel.

With the Final Scratch, it comes with a "scratchamp", which is basically the interface where the units connects.... hense eliminating the need for 2 soundcards... wherelse the PCDJ Scratch system doesn't have this external unit and therefor has to be plugged into the soundcard.....

You can find more info on the PCDJ Scratch here: http://www.pcdj.com/Products/Scratch.asp

Instead of buying 2 soundcards, you can also get something like the creative EMU 0404 soundcard which has 2 input/output.....

Get FinalScratch 2.0 At Sg , Roughly Costs about RM 2700 ..

But u can save more if u use Atomix Virtual DJ .

VDJ download Package FULL = RM 500 ++
USB MAYA44 2in/2out = i think about rm 700++

user posted image

Voila , Something Similar with Stantons FinalScratch .

If u dont like VDJ , U can try MIXvibes too smile.gif

MIXVIBES
VirtualDj

------------------------------------------------------

Somehow Im using VDJ + D-vinyl Controller biggrin.gif
The original D-Vinyl software is buggy & the vinyl simulation not good .
Too much delay , Around 20ms ....

------------------------------------------------------

pornstar . Best get a 2nd hand decks .
Technics or vestax . It will last longer compare to budget decks if u really gonna stress your TT's under max performance like turntablism .
Yet best carts is Shure's 44-7 , 100% anti-skip . Reccomended for Scratching
But price around RM 150 each just for the replacement stylus doh.gif

how do all these virtual turntables work? just run them on software then have a special controller to control it(similiar to midi keyboards/controllers)?
*
Virtual Turntables are just softwares .
But theres an option where u can use a controller that supports the software .
DMC1, DAC2 and DAC3 / Hercules DJ Console Mk2 to name a few ...

These hardware acts as an external controller which performs more profesionally compare using just a keyboard ..

Virtual Turntables also can become real by using a Soundcard which supports IN/OUT Asio And also the Special timecoded Vinyls where the data / source can be picked up from a normal turntable to the PC . Timecoded CD's also available if u want to use a CDJ .

-------------------------------------------------------------

If someone wanna start Mixing / dj'ing , Id suggest stick to software's first + a compatible soundcard .
After that get a Mixer . A basic one will do just for home usage .
Enough for someone to practice Dj'ing / mixing as software just performs like a CDJ
MP3's also an advantage where u can easily obtain your music whistling.gif

But if u into turntablism , then i cant help u ...
Without Turntables , I wonder ....
Using a mouse to scratch doh.gif

" VDJ Supports Webcam , Wave your hands rclxm9.gif " Its True ....

i know about the vdj`s...was considering then too actually and it`s a hell lot more cheaper than FS..but right now the most important thing for me is to get myself the moolah first.

yeah i tried vdj`s webcam scratching too but i dono the real performance because i don have a webcam so instead i used my phone as a webcam..connect it by bluetooth as a webcam then made vdj reconize it and just wave my fingers/hand in front of the camera and i get scratching sounds..interesting to say the least brows.gif

Webcam sounds "interesting"..... but seems more like a plaything rather then use for real...... Maybe if you are playing in a club and have like a big screen projector..... that should be cool..... And then you use the Alexis Air-FX..... Ladies will really be impressed!!! They will say "Looks like HE knows how to use his hands well!"

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........

I think I'll rush out and buy one now!!!!

Well, it doesn't use a vinyl if that's what you mean.... they work like those professional DJ CD players like you see in clubs..... not the ones with the turntable-like device ontop.... but the console version..... sometimes rackmounted!

Basic - ly a controller does is to simulate everything that u can do in our PC .
Just that its External & its a hardware . Compare by pushing keyboard buttons .

Mixer = Mixer
- Basic Function With 3-EQ + Gain ( Hi / Mid / Low )
- Channel Upfaders
- Crossfader

Controller = Controller
- Play / Pause / Cue
- Pitch Adjust
- Pitch Bend (-|+)
- Jog wheel

This Product is like a Basic CDJ & Basic mixer for beginner or professional use . Built in Both .
You can also use the Dedicated Controller With another Mixer if u want smile.gif

Vinyl Simulation only can be done with Proper hardware / Turntables / Tabletop CDJ's .
Using These controllers are only for simulating CDJ's , Good for mixing / Club use .
For scratching , you still need a Turntable smile.gif

The Stanton TT's looks sweet . But if u planning to go mainstream , Better stick to industry standard or something similar . Newer TT's may have more functions & can help u at home . But when you are out performing , You may need to use thiers .
You will be like icon_question.gif
But u can always have an option to bring your own gear , but competition is standard . Either Technics or vestax ..

The Mk5 costs about RM 2800 Retailing here .
But i got mine from a friend's - friend ( some rich brat ) at about Rm 3500 a Pair + behringer Dx626 Mixer + Voltage Transformer (Heavy duty) sweat.gif
I got my own carts for about Rm 500 ++ , because the one comes along with it putus . I wonder how the person scratch doh.gif
The TT's & Mixer are from Japan , Runs on 115V . Both Items are Mint in condition as the person bought it just because he watch too much MTV doh.gif
And he mentioned " Linkin park " sweat.gif

Nah , im noob in instruments .
I dont even know how to scratch .
Im basicly into club & technical mixing .

The hardest part is not mixing , but its your music tracklisting & cuepoints .
To make things more interesting , My mixes are tight as i only takes 1/2 of each music .
Most of my time spent Analyse my music & setting right cuepoints icon_rolleyes.gif
And btw , Im playing electroclash . More complicated than any other dance music smile.gif

Cool.... that's why it's good to have a club DJ over here....
More questions can be answered about stuff I really don't know.....
And for me..... it's the art of turntablism that intrigues me..... taking a piece of music, and completely re-shaping it to be called your own.....

But when it comes to DJing..... I'm more like a Band member rather then the whole band.... you know what I mean? Like, I would probably spin to a band (and using all the cool controllers) rather then gigging at a club alone.....

But that's just the inner guitarist talking! hahahahah!!

Again, glad to have you on board ivan!

Hmm , Got hooked into dance music since 1999
Between :-

1999 - 2001 - Mainly commercial house / club music / Cheezy stuff
2001 - 2004 - Hanged awhile into Progressive / melodic trance
2005 Till now - Got Influenced into electro / electroclash / electro house

Got my gear between 2003 , It was MK2 that time .
Then came along the D-vinyl2020 in 2004 to get Mp3's playing .
But since then not much time to play with my gear cos busy working .
End of 2005 only change to MK5 , and recently got hooked into VirtualDJ software .

Never performed live nor played in any clubs , Im still noobie biggrin.gif
Just need some time to prepare my set's & i guess i can get going icon_rolleyes.gif

hey i found a driver for the emu10k equipped soundcards..basically the soundblaster live cards..it lets you use it in asio mode..my latency before this was 40ms..now with this drivers its at an all time low at 8ms!!!good for recording purposes too as i can use cubase with this and record at low latency.. find out more at

http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/

its a lil daunting at first..all the settings and the dsp`s and the routings..

oops.gif doh.gif anyways i dont like asio4all as its choices are limited..you cant make your own dsp`s..im currently using kx drivers and so far no problems with it..having fun as i make my oun guitar effects using its dsp`s..the best thing is the guitar sound doesnt even go out of the soundcard..its just processed right inside the emu chip itself...fruity loops is good..almost no lags at all when using my midi controller..

I normally go to the record shop behind Lot10..... That's where alot of them goes to buy their Vinyls..... mostly dance stuff.....

But with the price of Vinyls reaching over 100 sometimes...... it's a wiser investment to get an Mp3 vinyl like FinalScratch...... if you're just a home user.

well in my personal experience Technics would be a better choice than any other brands. firstly coz of the built...the thing is like a tank. suppose to last you a lifetime. the torque i admit is lower than it's counterparts (Vestax, Numark or Stanton) but it gets the job done. so if you wanna invest in something that won't disappoint, Technics is the way to go. other brand i suggest you to check out are Stanton STR-8 150 and Numark TTX (not gonna recommend Vestax's PDX coz i really hate this turntable...the built quality is terrible and prone to damage coz the body is plastic)...as for your 5K budget, maybe look for second hand decks? you can get a pair of SL 1200 MK2 for approx RM 2500 if you're lucky and spend the rest of your cash on a good mixer and a nice pair of stylus. but brand new should cost you around RM 4000 for a pair (leaves you with RM 1000...barely enough for a good mixer and a pair of stylus).

Well, it's either the standard 1200, or something abit more Nu-Skool....
Maybe Numark TTX (GLEE!!!!) or The new Stanton STR8.150!!

Or might even ditch Vinyl and go for something like The Numark CDX (Which by the way, is AWSOME....) or even MORE nu-skool like the Numark HDX..... which has a built in Hard Disk drive on it's own!

Erm, make sure u get the right numarks. Cos the "old" stock TTXs overheat with prolonged usage.

I doubt there are any old stocks left, but just make sure.

I don't like numarks.. the platters dont have tiny dimples smile.gif

VirtualDJ needs a Soundcard to work with it ,
Among the best ones are Maya44 . which retails around 6XX ++

In garage sale there is one Juli@ and also Maya 44 smile.gif

Will it work if we have 2 sound cards installed? One using Soundblaster, and the other using the internal soundcard?

not too sure about that..i think soundblaster alone should be enough..use the KX drivers that i was talking about..it`ll turn SB into an asio compatible card which means it`ll have a 4x4 channel..not too sure about this..suggest you do a research on the KX drivers first

Then you will only have Outputs , Not enough inputs if u want to simulate vinyls Or cdj ,
Only able to use the programs + saperate audio channels where u can connect them to an external mixer .

Currently im using Prodigy 7.1LT , Need to use ASIO2KS to make it work .
But the asio2.0 does not work with VDJ , but traktor & others works well sleep.gif

A better soundcard = better quality in terms of audio , Best if performing outdoor .

Yesterday im browsing for some gear and i came upon this MAWZER
The MAWZER is the only MIDI controller on the market allowing an infinite customizable combination of controls.

May you work in the Audio field or as a VJ, the MAWZER will help you do the job faster and easier. Simply plug *MODULES* in the Backplane, assign midi controls in your favorite software, and you're ready to play.

The MAWZER is build with ruged materials, enclosed in a flight-case box for maximum reliability in your live experience.

i'm using traktor dj studio as a supplement to my usual DJ setup and i find that its really great and versatile. i could cross mix mp3s with vinyl and play cds on traktor. Gives me far greater choice of material to mix with considering the availability of vinyl here. and i don't have a CDJ...yet. so traktor is the only thing i use to mix mp3s/CDs with vinyl.

of course, this only works well if you're a mix dj, if you're a scratch dj, best guess if you could use traktor to loop the sounds and then at least use a turntable to scratch the samples on.

Check out my thread on Records For Sale. Great for those interested in scratching. Anybody scratch here?

Get a pair of 2nd hand Technics 1200 if you're not sure what to get. No regrets even if you found out this isn't the hobby for you.

Anybody here buy albums on vinyl? Not just strictly for DJing purposes.

What if I had a very old Technics Turntable (the one they use to play old vinyls) Can I use it to scratch vinyls and use it like a DJ turntable??

Sure...... if you want to destroy the turntable.......
The problem with the SLB, is that it's belt drive...... which means it turns via a belt (Like a washing machine), as opposed to a direct drive....
Not to say a belt-drive turntable can't scratch. Many budget turntables are belt drive too, but the belt has to be replaced every so often. And judging from your OLD turntable, I say the belt hasn't been replaced and the parts are already old.

You can probably play records on it....... but definately NOT scratch without seeing permenant damage.

for your belt drive turntable its ok to mix with it, but scratching is extremely hard.

numark starter kit is not good for scratching because the turntables are also belt-drive, but if you're really on budget then no choice lor... if you're serious about DJing, chances are you'll grow outta these decks really quick and upgrade them pretty soon....if possible try saving hard for a pair of technics SL-1200 or vestax

to link the turntable to computer do you mean you load samples in mp3/wav format in computer then scratch over them on your decks? to do that you'd need to buy final scratch. if you just mean by cross-mixing between vinyls and mp3s then you only need to get some software like traktor and use an external mixer.

Ummm..... Actually, the Numark Starter that "I" Have is a pair of TT1625, which ARE Direct Drive....

Numark starters are a good choice because it's easily available in KL, and it's quite reliable and cheap. Of course, if you have extra cash, you can get them seperately and get a higher end turntable and mixer.

the numarks battlepak is a great starter kit..you might wanna look at stantons starterkit offers as well..numarks have improved their quality so it isnt fair to always criticize if you dont have a bad experience with them..i have a few friends who are actually USING numarks AND the Technics and they have no complaints with them..one of them is using the TT200 and it has better torque than the technics..and one of the are using the TTX-1 and he says that it`s waaaaay better than the technics decks any day..personally i dont own any TT`s but based on my research and testimonials from ppl athat are close to me..numarks are on par or better then the technics..a good begginer TT`s are the numark TT200`s.im getting the TT500`s though.these are my opinions based on my own research.

Yeah.... the newer ones are numbered differently. I agree that Numark makes Excellent decks.... But Stanton is also producing fine pieces these days too..... but I HATE the new "modern-retro" design that they are forcing down our throats. I'll stick to Numarks now thankyouverymuch.

rclxm9.gif hey how's it going guys! I'm new to this, sorry for just popping in! Well just to share, I'm a Gemini and Behringer fan. Gemini has some pretty good range of decks (though not the best - Technics RuleZ)~ I'm happy with mine ( XL-300). Behringer make some pretty easy and hardcore mixers. I've used my equips for many parties and underg. mix scenes. oh, and Yes, I'm a vinyl guy. Have no clue off the high-tech computer mixing stuff, but trying to get into it. I saw this forum and thought that it's cool. Well, nice meeting u guys!

Nope. Don't like 'em... Unless they are the $4k+ variety. I find the lower-end models not worth at all.....

I'd rather get the Numark iDJ 2....

guys..ITS HERE!!!!muahahahah..my numark tt500`s and the mixer and...jeng jeng jeng...rane serato scratch live..everything seems to be in working condition..now testing if there`s any faut due to delivery.serato works great with no lag whatsoever unlike stanton..and the numarks torque from their new motors is superb.i`ll pick this over the technics sl`s anytime.1 thing to complain about is the mixer..its the numark DXM09..the crossfader seems to be a little stuck when i first opened it but after playing it for awhile it loosened up..so i dont know if its mmg likethat or what.other than that the mixer is great.Digital circuitry and build in effects.and another thing..serato is great but the interface is kinda lame..boring..no doubt is functional but its boring as im used to my friends traktor interface on his finalscratch.well thats all for now.majulah djing untuk negara.

i think the worth cdj to get is pioneer cdj1000mk model above due to it's variety of functions and that really cost a bomb. after seeing superstar dj with that and a good mixer really does amaze me. one of them was eddie halliwell that firing up the crowd during his performance.

how much is a CDJ800 now? altho as an alternative you can look around for CDJ500s. the thing is discountinued from production because it's an old model. but it gets the job done. some of my friend who uses it says it has the best lens lifetime span among all th pioneer models. oh and pornstar...where did you get the SSL? i coudn't find any store that carry Rane here in KL. Sinamex only carry stanton right? and 1.8K is a very good price.

my ssl is actually 2nd hand from a producer friend of mine..its used just for studio use and its only 2 months old and used less than 10 times.he ordered it himself at an online store.. www.decks.co.uk if im not wrong..a new set wont be this cheap i think..mebbe around 2k plus BUT definetly CHEAPER than FS2.So far now im using it has performed up to expectations and to what it claims to do so im satisfied with it.Whould recommend this to anyone who wants this kind of setup. Now i know 1 guy who uses FS1.5 a guy who uses FS2(his setup is on a powerbook) and another guy using MixVibes.Guess the next best thing is to see which setup and product produces the best results then?anyone for a product review/shootout? smile.gif

CDJ800 would be around RM3k++ per unit...as for CDJ500, it doesn't scratch, so its a major setback there...

i kinda have a bad history with behringer. don't get me wrong, it's a decent product with an awesome price. but the quality just doesn't justify a purchase. i once owned a DJX-400...and it was destroyed in probably a full year of use.

a Pioneer CDJ 100s would be a good choice if you're into mixing...i think because of discontinuation of production the prices has drop tremendously to like RM 1000 each. but if into scratching....get CDJ 800.

I actually tried a whole load of Turntables in US while I was at the guitar Center.... The so called "new" Stantons were on display and they were quite nice to handle. The play button was right where it was supposed to be.... the motor speed was VERY consistant (don't forget..... this is a show room model and lots of kids has been playing with it) and was generally impressed with.

But what I REALLY am impressed with was the numark iDJ.... Plug in 2 iPods.... and you're off! Scratching, mixing..... everything was possible...... and in such a small unit! Can't wait to try out the iDJ 2!!! I really want to buy another 40gig 4th Gen iPod for the iDJ man..... very very very cool unit.

Hi Ryo,
I've heard that the CDJ 100s is about RM1000 too, but everywhere I've asked so far has quoted about RM1399. Do you know where I would be able to get it for less?

guys, now i'm doing some homework here. i wanna learn to mix musics. might get myself a gear to start with. i think i don't want to get vinyl TT as it's kinda pain in the ass i should say as you'll be gettin hard times to find those vinyls and it doesn't comes cheap. i donno. it's just my point of view.
instead i'm eyeing on some CDJ and HDDJ. as it's much more easier and cheaper to source tracks.
how's Gemini iCDJ http://store.topdjgear.com/geicipcocdpa.html and Numark iDJ2 http://store.topdjgear.com/nuidipmicows.html ? what you guys say? i'm thinkin of spendin about 3k. gonna save hard for this. =)

if you're into scratch hip hop style go for vinyls, if you're in club music then go for cdj. i'm not sure about ipod dj stuff though but since you wanna learn to mix why not learn to mix with software first... i do suggest spending another 1k to get a pioneer cdj100 package its pretty good for a start.

Actually...... Since you want to learn to mix...... start with software. Seriously. That's how I learned to get the timing and beats right......
Honestly.... I STILL use software to mix songs at parties, and I use my Vinyls for scratching stuff on recordings I do.

Since the numark iDJ 2 STILL requires the use of an iPod, unless you already own one, then I don't think it's the most suitable option. If you're just mixinf for fun..... then get a cheap CD-J system and that should be fine..... but if you want to move to the pros.... invest in either a Computer Based system (like PCDJ red with their DMC-1 controller)... or a professional grade CD-J system...... both might run up as high as 4-5k easily.

And if you're a REAL gigger.... then screw CD systems and go for a laptop based solution instead........ the last thing you want to carry to a gig is a huge case of CDs/Vinyls which you might end up losing a few in the process as well.

yup even blacktrix suggest software 1st once you're really into it you can invest more into those expensive gears. better than buying a expensive gear 1st then not touching it after a change of interest. even some pub i know are using software, i remember seeing pcdj which blacktrix mention it been used in some pub playing mambo jambo oldies lol. just do a search there are ton of softwares and usb console out there for you to fool around really.

Check out Traktor - allot of credible DJ's in KL's underground using it. They usually supplement it with a couple of additional stuff though:

External soundcard (one with more than just 1in1out) I personally use a M-audio quattro with 4ins4outs

Then...

You find a DJ mixer (DJM500's are allot of fun) or even the Behringer models arent so bad.

Then...

You take 2 outs and plug them into 1 channel of thie mixer - the other two on another channel.

In Traktor's preferences, swap to External Mixer mode - that way you can cue with the mixer, and mix as if you have 2 virtual decks with Traktor.

Of course - if you REALLY want to get fancy.

You can sync a few Traktor computers together - plug in more drum machines - and mash up tracks like a nutcase. But your ears are gonna bleed and your fingers are gonna go numb after the 4th hour.

We tried it. This is about 5 in the morning at a jam session.

Its sort of Final Scratch mode without the scratchamp hardware - Traktor's nice cos you can loop - and the differenciating factor between Traktor and cd/vin mixing is that now that it allows you to go beyond what two decks can do - ie: mashing loops up or multiple syncs

Let us know how your progress goes! I'd be interested to see if KL's gonna have another Juan Atkins smile.gif

Well - check out Serato by Raine - they have some seriously good hardware AND it uses Traktor as a backend as well. Final Scratch is nice - but Stanton don't stand behind their design as firmly as Raine does.

Yeah man - the next rev of the Macbooks - thats gonna be SIiiiiiickkk...

Have you checked out Ableton Live?

What happened to them? Did they break? Or did the diaphram tear?

I've got a friend who's swearing by his Behringers - but then again - for about RM500 you can pick up a pair of Technics or Pioneer headphones.

Great for DJ/LivePA but they really hurt your ears if you wanna do studio monitoring for a mixdown.

Rane Serato and Stanton's Final Scratch are not the only solution for digital DJing. By the way, they cost too much!

DJDecks.be is the cheapest solution. A very stable software with good support! With that, you have the option of playing real vinyl unlike CD turntables.

2nd-hand/used Technics SL-1200 & Vestax PDX2000 turntables are cheap (<RM1500) and last longer than newer Numark or Stantons. Same concept when buying a used European car compared to a new local model.

Below is my setup for MP3/Digital DJing:
1 x Audiotrak Maya 44 PCI soundcard
1 x AMD 1.2 Duron computer
2 x Vestax PDX2000 turntables
1 x Vestax PMC07 mixer

PM me if you're looking for 2nd-hand turntables & mixers. Will try and work something out within your budget.

Read through this thread and you will eventually discover Stanton's and also Numark DJ stater kits. Retail below 2K.... smile.gif

i don't think starter kits are good man, what's the point of buying gears if somewhere in the middle you're gonna quit coz your hardware sucks. if the budget is super tight, getting used standard stuff is better than those starter kits.

Looks nice, its bringing technology into another level but the thing is anything can go wrong when you are using a pc to dj. Thats what I think hmm.gif

Agree, might as well save up for technics. Be patient and get a pair of good decks, trust me its worth getting technics. smile.gif

That's true. But for me, I started off with a starter kit, because......well...... I already spent so much on guitar and just want to get a good feel for it. I haven't touch my decks in a while...... but thinking of getting a Seranto Digital Vinyl system......

Sorry Ryo.... No more budget for your Final Scratch at the moment! Spent all my cash on a new guitar and buying a new amp by mid of the year! Also, have to save up for ANOTHER guitar when I go back to the States in 2008!

True, but even a 320kbps quality tracks cant beat vinyls quality and you cant feel the vinlys if you are using cds.

Unless youre using serato then its diff case but for scratchers, I dont think they want to use serato to scratch eh? I have nothing against the technology, just that if we can get vinyls like in UK, then it would be nice.. biggrin.gif

lay off the mp3 dude.. waves are better to compare but still it doesn't have the vinyl distortion and the warm sounds of the vinyls. yea i gotta agree wif u man vinyls are hard to get in malaysia and they cost a bomb to ya pocket, that's why most local dj are using cdj nowadays.

try groove syndicate in desa sri hartamas or sinamex in times square...that's where i get most of my gear from =) and there's this place in puchong called acoustic sound & lighting that carries vestax gear.

beginner sets would start from RM3-4k i think. but do try to buy 2nd hand items that's in good condition and you'll be surprised with the kind of bargains you can get.

Depends on the purpose really....
Again, as stated before, if you're a GIGGING DJ, where you go from one place to another to DJ, it's better if you have something portable..... and nothing is more portable then a Laptop with a mixer. You can hold your entire music collection, indexed and marked, ready to be played at the touch of a button. Yes, you sacrifice alot of versatility, but the portability makes up for it.

HOWEVER....

If you are a resident DJ at a club or something or you just want to practice at home, then yes...you'll need a decent CDJ or Turntable setup, to prepare you for a resident gig. Any club you go to, at least you're prepared to use CD-J or Turntables..... but of course, the cost of buying the albums should also be taken into consideration.

try this number for Groove Syndicate, 0166070297 (Manissa). She's the main gal there at Groove Syndicate and should hook you up with whatever you need thumbup.gif
as for KL you check out Excessive Records, it's near Coronade Hotel. Call Bryan on 0122209931 for more info.

an apple laptop already already cost more than 3k dude. laptop + mixer can be real expensive since u need to invest on an external soundcard with 2 outs. why not add 900 bucks to get a cdj starter pack.

yea you get the feels especially on mk series plus spinning on decks looks better than on a laptop.

software doesn't sacrifice versatility, in fact they can do more than what decks have to offer. in facts there are some famous local dj that spins with laptop. while international dj are spinning on the digital technology as well either with cdj or a laptop setup, just like gabriel & dresden, sasha, even paul van dyke that came down last year...

for mixing u can use anything....even those old modded cassette player with variable pitch control can be use for mixing hehe. but yea the choice depends on how much features u wanna get. and the higher up the more features it has. but IMHO nothing beats analog. just get yourself a pair of technics sl1200 turntables and a decent 2 channel mixer....you're set!!! thumbup.gif

I may want to let go of my Stanton STR8-150 (x2) and my Stanton SA-3.

Mounted on it are Shures M44.

I think, it's been a long time since I've skratched.

If I can get a reasonable deal out of this I may let it go smile.gif

Select all audio files used for the certain set (when selecting it geets a yellow colour) and after you select them all , even if in two seperate audio tracks go and press on "Render to Disk" . A window will probably show up and the press OK (you can turn Off the File Analysis).

hope that will help!

No direct link , hardware needed & good soundcard / ASIO enabled . alot $$$
I dont suggest to go that way unless you are using Vinyl's .
Cd's are easily obtained or maybe burn them from your collection .
Unlike vinyls are hard to come by ...

Maybe mixing tru traktor or other software is easy becos of the features .
But what makes a Dj is the music not the gear icon_rolleyes.gif

gee, thanks for the info. btw i am now living in kuching, sarawak....
these gears can be ordered from Lee Music & i understand a complete set might costs u about 7K++. the last time they sold it during 2005. since then, nobody wants to buy them....waaa.

i dont really make a survey about other product instead of pioneer, because of its famoucity & most of my friend use them.

Well, I always wanted to be a Dj since i was 14.. During tat time, I didnt have much $$ to get a turn table so I decided to have virtual Dj software.. At the same time, I like Trance & Techno songs too (Tiesto, Ganjaguru, Paul Van Dyk bla bla bla) sweat.gif .. So guys do you think I should start the "real" Djing since I can spend for the eqs? Almost all of the time, I was practicing my skills using the Virtual Dj.. What I able to do is only loop (desk A) and then crossfade it to the next desk. sad.gif .. However, the tools are limited. So guys, how should I start to become a real Dj? I m planning to get a turn table but I do not know which is good for a beginner and what eqs should I get? (mic?mixer?) Anyway, I m really new to "real" Djing..

My details:
Talent for a Dj: Only virtual Dj
Types of Dj prefer: Trance Dj ( A little confuse here.. mind helping me to decide?)
Preferable songs: Trance & Techno
Budget: Around 3k

P/S: Sorry for asking noob questions.

well if you want to stick to softwares instead of hardwares you can alwiz check out the thing called midi controllers
currently im still waiting for my behringer bcr2k which i will be using with ableton
m audio x session is also a good one if youre trying to play with softwares
it depends on the person itself tho
most ppl still prefer the analog which produce way better sound quality and some just simply like playing cds as for me myself i still prefer cds but working with softwares you can just do more things than just plain mixing

wow, congratulations for those gears...may i asked what is that you are using?

i am planning to buy myself a cdj1000mk3 & a decent mixer...maybe djm600 is good enough for the moment.

please, could you tell me the current market price for the package?

thank in advance...
p/s: i've been asking the same question every now & then but nobody entertain me...waaa!! icon_question.gif
*
i would suggest djm800 for it is a semi midi controller so you can also use it for softwares and also hardwares but im sure its pricey but i dunno the price

Added on June 29, 2007, 5:19 amand also do check out the ad by pioneer i dunno if its the latest one but its cool to me
james zabiela is in it

Try out M-Audio's new Torq system....
It comes with 2 specially encoded Vinyls and 2 encoded CDs, which when played back through the soundcard provided, able to play and control whatever that's running in the Torq Software on your laptop.
Costs about RM1500 at SMX.... might buy it if I have enough funds.

analog vs digital = very subjective nowadays lol. but my ears tells me that analog still sounds more warm than digital. but hey nowadays everyone is using cdj or laptop setup anyways. ableton really allow you to do more than just regular dj setup, it can really help you to push your mix above the limits.

Hola! New to this but am I mistaken if I assume that buying a Behringer BCD3000 is a simple start process for learning how to mix.

I'm looking to get a vinyl deck for the fine practice but I'll tune my taste in music on the behringers since Vinyls aren't exactly cheap and easy to obtain.

On a separate note vinyls from mailorder with insurance and shipping costs only around 70rm from UK. Isn't that better than 100rm?

haha tell me bout it nothing beats the sound quality of a vinyl but then i wouldnt want to carry heavy loads around besides more famous djs are using softwares to mess around instead of hardwares and heck to save ableton file in mp3 is so problematic zzz

btw anyone uses ableton with keyboard mapping ? im having hard time figuring ways to key map perfectly zzz and also regarding the effects there can anyone teach me icon_question.gif

Actually, the M-Audio Torq is quite cheap.

The most famous, The Stanton Finalscratch 2, is going for RM2500++

Hey juz like 2 ask if any1 sellin of their final scratch i wana get it. N wher do i get new slipmats n a couple of good scratch records.
*
For a budget setup similar to Rane's Serato I use:

DJDecks software - RM150
2 x Serato timecode vinyl - RM100
1 x Audiotrak Maya 44mk2 soundcard - RM500
2 x turntables
1 x mixer

The performance of the software depends on your machine. Best part is you get to play vinyl & mp3 without extra cost. The soundcard is also good enough for recording mixes.

Well, there's the costly, but awesome Torq Xponent:
http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=produc...RCESTATICPAGE=1

Or a cheaper USB mixer called the X-Session Pro:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/XSessionPro-main.html

Call up SMX at Berjaya Times Square for more info on them.

Easiest way is using the X-Session Pro.

Hook it up to a USB port, load up the program, connect the speakers to your PC and you're done.

Hah, I'm having trouble getting rid of my Stanton STR8-150. I've been bumping my For Sale/Trade thread for quite a while now.

If anyone could forward my offer to their friends, I'd be glad.

A Technics is much needed for Hi-Fi playback, hopefully sometime soon!

Cheers.

wah, so long not bumping into this thread tongue.gif been so busy with work nowadays...
I am not a dj, nor playing anywhere live...just like to do mixes for my listening pleasure.
you are sure laugh at my gear now...wahahaa. a cheap Sony VAIO notebook, and virtual dj...hehehe. just good enough for offshore dj-ing in the cabin. nod.gif
anyway, been hoping & saving a lot of money now to buy my decks...after settling in my new house or not too busy with work.

to answer your question, Luconia is a diving spot in Borneo waters...also our gas field, where i am working now.

leng2, can i ask you where did you buy your dj gears & how much? thanks.

erm... what i'm bought is a midi controller (vestax vci-100), and yes, it has everything in it... cdjs are no way within that range.

the cheapest package that i know is the numark battle pack v.4, rm1100.|
it has everything you need, 2 direct drive turns + slipmats, mixer, headphone and all the cables.

nice gear...but i'm more to invest in a cdj because of easy access to mp3. vinyl is quite expensive nowadays.
would like to try the real gear tho...other than using laptop sad.gif

btw, thanks for answering me blush.gif

thanks pornstar & echobrainproject for the info.

I have visited Lee music at Hock Lee centre about ordering the cdj's...they do have that service but they need me to provide them with the specs. the last cdj stock there was around 2005, which they sell for about RM8k the complete set, including the mixer. still quite cheap if it was a pioneer set
about price range....not too sure what they would charge tho...hopefully they can accept installments.
last time we have bought a Roland workstation at Lee music.

btw prnstar, what is that xp-10? i forgot...hehe

My setup, barely weeks old.

I bought the whole damn thing without even knowing how to use them. Now slowly getting the hand of it.

A bit of an overkill for a beginner according to most of my friends. I'm ordering a pair of Technics 1210 Mk5s soon.

Yo PIMPIN!!! Your 'GUNS' are effking DOPE! Damn, i'm always fascinated by dj-ing but just don't have the resources to get dj-ing eqiupments, and moreover i'm a guitar player. First love will always be band music but i'm into house and trance as well... i have music ideas contantly just that i don't really know much about getting the right tools to record my own ideas and material.

no, i just use it as a mixer?

channel 1 - left cdj
channel 4 - right cdj
send/return - efx1000

channel 2 & 3 - soon to be SL1210 Mk5s icon_question.gif laugh.gif

i've got the roland edirol to record from mixer to PC if thats what you mean but thats just using the normal audio cables cool.gif

BTW: Has anyone a dedicated PC or built one for music? Currently debating whether to get a new PC or Mac Pro which is quite expensive but if its worthwhile then i'll consider. Sigh, two expensive hobbies cars and music.

wah also like trance? that is even godlike for the gears you have! thumbup.gif rclxm9.gif

from your stories, your setup is on par with leading trance artists in the world. now that is what i called serious hobby...not many are willing to spend bermati2an on expensive hobby like djing, including me...still have some doubts with it, but i know it is a good investment. just make sure it will be put to good use....

Speed: No, that's just something I use to mess around with stuff. I use them separately, they only share the speakers but thats the old layout. Now there is no PC in that room - I use the net in my home office - once I do decide on that new Mac then I'll most probably put it there.

Porn - Serato is something I have been considering, but I don't know who would have stock in KL. Been rather busy these past few weeks, little time to think about gear.

sars, i'm using the vci-100 for dj'ing, but haven't got the time to look for an audio interface just yet... so i'm still doing it without the help of a headphone. i haven't actually tried deckadance cuz it seems not able to detect the vci, tried all sort of ways but it doesn't work.

and can it run serato too ? or serato needs rane hardware to work ?
*
if you are talking about pc djing using virtual dj or traktor or sewaktu dgn nya. yes i am
but only limited with 1 soundcard & headphones. to make it really working i need to save cue points 1st before start mixing. dissed the mouse, use only touchpad. works well for me.

deckadance suppose to support vci-100 by default... i've got no idea how to get it recognise the vci... do u have xponent's midi mapping? you need to have that one... once u got it, then head on to the setup, load the map and plug in the controller.

wahh speed you really good la
i use touchpad use till cannot tahan need to get the mouse to work on it
anyway tried the xponent with deckadance
seems to have problem on the pitch faders and jog dial
which is so wasted
but maybe its my mistake there is still a lot to learn
i dun really know bout all the mapping thing maybe it can be done
currently just using my knobs to adjust pitch and buttons to pitch up down instead of using jogdial

speed you playing anywhere ? or just a bedroom dj ?

I was about to get a the last Serato unit available at Mercoms but my other hobbies are way too expensive - got hit by huge huge bills for my cars recently so music would have to wait.

On a separate note, I did venture into old school LPs - bought a Pro-Ject turntable from Tong Lee and the sound is pretty wicked. Now listening to old school songs to unwind.

hie ppl,

I am a noob trying to get my hands to home djing (if theres such a word). I plan to get entry level all-in-one dj kits. I checked out

1. Mixman DM2 GBP 49.90
MP3 GBP 80.00
2. Hercules DJ Control MP3 GBP 76.00
DJ Console Mk2 GBP128.00 ( whats the diff, between the 2? is
it one can play mp 3s, another
have to hook peripheral playing
device like cd player or vinyl?)
3. Behringer BCD2000 B control GBP 100.00
4.Gemini CDMix5.0 DJ CD Mix Package GBP 200.00

I know the Mixman looks more like a PS2 music mixer than a console, but i'm starting out and like all, have a dream of having a home production house. ANy other recoommendations? About these price range would be great. And where can i get these in KLang Valley?

Is there such a thing as a six channel mixer? Just curious.

EDIT: Nevermind, found the DJM-1000

DJM-600? I wouldn't have a clue bro, currently using a DJM-800 with two CDJ1000Mk3s.

For those in the know, how reasonable are these prices - Pioneer CDJ1000Mk3 for RM4,300+ each, Pioneer EFX-1000 for RM2,900 and Technics SL1210Mk5 for RM7,400 for two including slipmats, stylus.

Hi all

Let say i would want to buy a mixer for just EDM music, can we just use any mixer in the market that can suit the purpose?

Recently i have bought a used Vestax dj mixer to started out my true gear collection & later i found out it is most suitable for hip-hop/battle usage only. I was like WTF??? and most of the search result on the net says the same.

Please, can I use that mixer for EDM purpose?

a normal Vestax PMC-07 Pro dj mixer.
it was stated clearly that it's most suitable for battle/hip-hop music. plus user reviews on it.

but i have joined the unofficial vestax forum & asked about this mater. the admin says it can be used in any kinds of music

IMHO, if you already have it then just use it cause no reason why you can't use different genres of music (especially at my very beginner level).

Granted its not feature packed like more higher end mixers but basically you're just essentially mixing the sound from one channel with another with your crossfaders and up/down channel faders and you have your 3 band EQs.

I admit the layout is more for battle/scratch DJs but nothing you won't get used to after awhile. If you have it, use it. That's just what I think - I'm still extremely new to this so I'm giving you a truly truly layman's point of view.

indeed it was stated in the manual as well.

never mind, i would like to scratch once in a while tongue.gif
(i got it from this forum anyway, the mixer. coz it's cheap so i grab it earlier...without the turntable tongue.gif)

now waiting for the release of cdj-400. somewhat the function is between cdj-200, and has little bit of 1000mk3 and more or less the same as 800. and very affordable to....(actually if i tidak sayang duit i will angkut those cdj 1000mk3!)

then practice 1st, get to know the basic, then upgrade to djm800...my plan laa

sweet looking setup you got there... good enough for 2 arenas. btw, why the 4 1000s?

anyway, i'm more interested with the monitors. how's the krk over the alesis? i'm talking about sound precision (esp. mid-high freqs), do they sound good in the krk?

a lil off track here... this is something i'm working on last weekend.
initially planning to use as the remix of the track in the upcoming compilation album coming up this coming april 08.

It felt a lot more convenient having 2 different tracks cued as well as other loops/effects on hand plus three seemed like an unlucky number lol

the KRKs rock and for their size would put any speaker to shame. the alesis i haven't had a chance to really max out their full potential plus they are still new

but you could still cue with the other 2 turns, imho the other 2 1000s are not really much of a necessity.
i bet you must really know your stuff, or else you wouldn't be getting 4 tongue.gif

actually i've laid my eyes on the krk for sometime. where did you get yours? i suppose yours is 5s right?

Nah, I don't really, still new at this.

I just liked the idea to be honest.

You should get the KRKs, they are relatively inexpensive.

Ah damn shame. Cause my friends all leave their gear here (not DJ but guitars, etc cause the room although small is soundproof) and once I move into my new place, half of the top floor will be soundproof for music. I guess I just enjoy music, as much as an amateur/layman is able to.

Ah ok, thought Internet access offshore was kinda bad at least on the oil rigs etc if thats what you meant by offshore. Good money tho yeah?

Leng - You can get KRKs from SMX in Berjaya Times Square but I had gotten mine from this shop in Low Yatt that had lots of audio/midi gear (can't remember the name) but that was an impulse buy kinda like how the alesis were too come to think of it.

KRKs were I think 1300-1400 or so but the Alesis I can't recall. The KRKs were on the 3rd-4th floor in some secluded areas while the Alesis were from SMX.

If you want to test puas puas, just go to SMX they have both brands and numerous models on display and seemed pretty helpful enough to let me try a few seperate brands with different genres of music

Pioneer bridges the gap between computer jocks and CD Jocks with the new CDJ-400 digital turntable
November 2007

Pioneer Corporation, the leader in Pro DJ products and the innovator of the CD turntable, unveiled the latest addition to its family of CD turntables, the CDJ-400.  The CDJ-400 combines a sampling of features found in the different levels of Pioneer's CDJ series with the simplicity of a standard CD turntable, including USB1 integration and MP3 playback, MIDI support, scratching capability, scratch jog effect and a variety of looping functions.

The CDJ-400 is packed with features that are ideal for different levels of DJs, from the 'newbies' to the professional DJs who want to better manipulate their DJ computer software."

USB Integration and MP3 Playback
The CDJ-400's cosmetic design is simple and compact yet elegant with all of its various controls and features located directly on top of the unit.  A USB port found on the face of the player allows DJs to play their MP3 music collection from a wide variety of portable music devices such as thumb drives, MP3 players or external hard drives. With the use of a multi-function selector knob/button and its large, bright, dot-matrix LCD display, locating and accessing of files from these types of music devices as well as MP3 music files on CD and CD-R/RW through the CD slot are done with a turn and press of the knob.

DJ Software Compatibility and MIDI Control
With more of today's DJs utilizing different DJ software for their performances, the CDJ-400 is also equipped with a PC mode.  In this mode, the CDJ-400 is a native controller for software such as Pioneer DJS2 computer software and SERATO(R) Scratch LIVE3.  For example, the movement of the pitch slider on the CDJ-400 can control the pitch slider on the computer software and no timecode CD is required for audio control.  The player can also act as a MIDI controller where the user can assign virtually every button on the player to trigger functions of various DJ software programs.

World's First Scratch Jog Effect
A highlight and an advancement of the CDJ-400 is its scratching capability.  In addition to traditional "vinyl" mode scratching, Pioneer implemented the World's First Scratch Jog Effect.  Three highlighted buttons, each assigned to a special effect, Bubble, Trans and Wah, creates unique scratching sound effects that can be enabled by the DJ on the fly.  A "hold" button was also added to retain the different effects throughout the session or until its release, which can also be triggered at any point of play.
Additional features in the CDJ-400 include:

    * Digital Loop functions:  A variety of loops can be created for additional audio effects
o Beat Loop:  Automatically creates four beat loop based on the beats per minute (BPM) of music currently being played
o Loop Divide:  Rhythmically divides the loop in halves to create different patterns
o Hot Loop:  Restarts the loop seamlessly from its entry without interruption of the music
    * Digital Jog Break:  In CD mode the CDJ-400 contains three effects, Jet, Roll and Wah, which further enhances the audio by simply rotating the jog dial.  The same buttons for the Scratch Jog Effect are assigned to the Digital Jog Break which are accessible at any point of play
    * Tempo Control:  Four tempo modes, ±6%, ±10%, ±16% and WIDE4, provide additional speed control with a resolution of 0.02% in the 6% range
    * Cue/Loop Points: Up to 10 cue/loop points per disc, for up to 920 discs can be stored in memory
    * Jog Indicator: A break in the red halo illumination around the jog wheel provides instantaneous feedback to the DJ
    * Customizable Jog Wheel:  The top of the jog wheel can be removed enabling the user to add their own customized image
    * Digital Output: A digital output is available for a direct connection for clearer sound to a connected mixer
    * Resume Function:  The function takes effect if a CD is ejected accidentally. Once the DJ re-inserts the disc, it automatically starts playing from exactly the point where it stopped

The CDJ-400 will be available in Beginning 2008.

Pioneer offers a complete line of professional DJ equipment through its Professional Sound and Visual Division.  Their DJM, CDJ and DVJ Professional DJ equipment are known for their high quality sound and reliability and considered the industry standard at clubs, studios, mobile rigs and homes around the world. Speed - I'd get the 400s if I were you. Seems to have lots of features, is newer and cheaper too than the 1000s. For some reason the 800s never looked good to me either, and they're probably only industry standard in Malaysia - elsewhere its either 1000Mk3 or DVJ1000s soon to take over as the industry standard. Any idea when those are available locally or are they already available in KL (usual 2 month wait I suppose).

Redbustop - under RM1k IIRC. Have you considered other brands? AKG, Beyer, etc? Whatever it is, won't be mpre than RM2k anyways. If you can, keep a spare in case.

Since that you also convince me to get the 400. the only thing that stand the most in this unit is the midi controller ability.

from the pioneer guy reply to my email hopefully it will hit malaysian dealer store by this week. but in the press release it will available widely next year.

and yeah, previously i meant about the cdj-1000mk3 and cdj-800mk2. the older ones was discontinued

I use AKG K240 Studio headphones or Xone XD-53s for now. I've never had a high end Sennheiser so I can't recommend but Pioneer I've listenened to and they're something I would give a try if I needed a new pair.

Tell you what - tomorrow I'm supposed to pick up my second EFX1000 so I'll find out the price for the Pioneers. No promises cause they can't confirm if it'll arrive tomorrow or not and I won't be suprised either since the first one I ordered took 2 months.

Red/Speed - I think resellers are cheaper, especially if you have contacts I suppose as Pioneer would sell at recommended retail price while resellers get at a wholesale price and then I guess they can discount but it would be eating into their margin - correct me if I'm wrong.

All my Pioneer gear came from resellers, deposit today and pick-up following work day. Some deliver some don't and prices differ like for the EFX1000 had a RM200 difference in price but both had to come from Japan.

that's cool since you can pick it yourself. not for me since these gears are not available in kch... sad.gif

i do hope that i can order mine & hoping that they will not take the untung too much.....
perhaps the pioneer standard range of prices is including the reseller profit margin.
