If your area has Astro IPTV, it's now cheaper... RM248 for Astro SuperPack (SP1/SP2) + 10Mbps Fiber Broadband

chuppachop,

I spent some time down south last weekend. I had the chance to finally do some in depth analysis of the HD channels that Spore has to offer.

I found the FTA HD5 pretty good. I believe this was thru the StartHub box at my friends place. The display was also calibrated prior to me making my analysis. For a FTA channel, its pretty good.

I also observed the same stuff in 3 other residential houses with various displays all post calibration.

I noted that the compression on the HD channels offered by starhub are pretty high. I saw a lot of instances of pixelation or signs of bitrate starvation which is much less seen in Astro channels. I'm not sure if this is normal or maybe its just something that is happening due to the Olympics - channels being added. The other observation is that the framerates seem to be messed up on some channels where judder was seen clearly (again the displays were setup correctly). I saw it on some of the documentary channels as well as HBOHD. Is this ur observation as well? I observed the same issues with the sports channels as well. I could not see any option to check it on the decoder boxes and the only thing was resolution option.

I only checked out MioTVs offerings briefly and observed the pixelation as well, however motion seemed ok. Do u know who makes the decoder boxes for StarHub?

Starhub HD Interactive Box - CISCO
Starhub HD Hubstation, i.e. PVR - Thomson [now known as Technicolor]

Yes, the settings/options are only limited to resolution Output.....very crappy....in fact, u will noticed the menu interface is ancient dinosaur.....could not be compared to astro or mio TV. doh.gif

Yup, some of the HD channels are compressed....believe the priority is given to premium movie channels like FOX Movies Premium HD, FOX Family Movies HD, HBO Channels, Star Chinese Movie HD etc

The compression is quite obvious in fast motion scenes on History channel.

Actually, even SD channels are compressed, again channels they feel are not important like [V], Diva etc. are quite compressed....

I'm not sure how to tell framerates on the channels......

For HD5, not all programs are in HD though....have to wait till HD8, HD Suria & HD Vasantham [by end of 2013] to really see how Mediacorp fares.....

Thanks for the info.

The one thing that caught me by surprise was the compression I saw on HBO HD (which is given priority in Astro as well, Fox Movie HD seems be better in Astro though).

There were framerate mismatch for sure. I am quite sure the output of the box was 1080i/50Hz but the motion on the channels seems to suggesting some conversions going on.

SD channels were about the same as I saw here but I did not spend too much time on those to offer an solid opinion.

I have to say that I was impressed with the HD I saw off the HD5 channel.

P.S. the HD Olympics channels are only available on mio TV. Starhub does not have the rights to carry them.....yr original posts seems toention Olympics on Starhub. :-)

I watched Olympics on HD5 I believe. I meant that I thought the compression I observed was possibly due to the addition of the temp Olympic channels. I did not watch any Olympics on StarHub and did not know that StarHub is not airing them, but if that is the case, then the compression is excessive in my opinion on HBO HD which normally gets higher priority at cable providers.

Hmmm....I feel the HD channels are alright here......no frame delays.....maybe you can do a thorough check at your fren's place in S'pore if time allows.....still hoping Starhub can replace [V] with [V]HD instead. tongue.gif

I think HD should look good on the upcoming Disney XD HD on astro. rclxms.gif

There's a switching fee cos the new package is cheaper than original package.

I think you connected your Byond box to 2 different HD TVs. Your question have been answered by me and others in this thread before.

user posted image

The Byond box Digital Audio Output settings...

1) Dolby Digital 5.1 (Digital Only)
Byond HDMI Output and Co-Axial Output : YES got audio for ALL HD and SD Channels

Byond RCA (Yellow, White) Output : NO audio output for ALL HD Channels. YES, got analog audio for ALL SD Channels.

2) Stereo (Analog and Digital)
Byond HDMI, Co-Axial and RCA (Yellow, White) Outputs : YES got audio for ALL HD and SD Channels

To use setting (1) to get audio for all HD and SD channels from 1 Byond box to 2 HDTVs, must use HDMI splitter with 1-to-2 HDMI output and repeater/booster with IR relay. This question (including what HDMI splitters/repeaters to use) have already been answered here a few times before, so search this thread on your own. I am a bit tired and lazy to repeat and repeat here the same answers.
