QUOTE(heavenhell @ Nov 18 2011, 10:11 AM) Just bought my note ytd , if want to root need to update firmware to KK1 first ? mine is KJ6 now . First time using android , any noobie guide for rooting and what apps to dl ? Thanks Not necessary to upgrade firmware. You can root it using zergrush exploit:http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2111529/+560entry46812706 His guide also has instruction how to root plus install CWM too - just make sure you download the right kernel matching yours You can than upgrade your firmware after root ; some users has reported the root will remains with firmware upgrade. If you want to have better assurance, you can upgrade firmware first than root Refer page 101, post #2001 - I have listed some of the apps I have installed on my note . Use it as a reference guide |

This is ROOTING guide for new users to Android ( taken and edited from my SGS II thread posting ): TS please post in page 1 if you deem useful
What is rooting and what are its benefits? Rooting an Android phone opens its core functions that aren’t available when you buy it. One of the major benefits is the ability to install apps to the SD card, which saves space on the device. Rooting also enables you to install apps that required access to system files, example - titanium backup , root explorer, adfree, voltage control apps, etc . Commonly use of rooting is to allow installation of alternative roms which is faster and better, more features, and reduced bloatware. Some roms will auto root when you flash your phone Rooting will not remove your 3rd party apps, data/wipe clean your phone. And the chance of bricking the phone during rooting is close to impossible. Just make sure your phone has at least 50% battery charge. Do refer to the specific methods on how to unroot back Refer below links to understand more about rooting : http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/04/15/ro...-android-phone/ http://www.androidcentral.com/rooting-it-me-some-qa QUICKIE Guide to rooting : Read this if you don't know where /how to get started ? 1. Rooting will not spoil your phone. Only an idiot /dumb guy will spoil it by rooting. The chance you spoil it is 1 in a million 2. Rooting means warranty void 3. Rooting will not delete/clean any data - all your 3rd party apps, original apps, data, settings etc remains intact 4. If you just want to root ONLY: - Easiest use ZergrushExploit : any firmware based http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 This tool with a script allows you to unroot phone 5. If you want root plus clockworkmod recovery: - easiest use Chainfire CF Root v5. Make sure you download the right version to match your firmware. Using this will also auto install a CWM app in your phone - quite convenient as you can use app to boot into recovery, download mode, do backup and restore, flash kernels etc http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784 This post has been edited by benny888: Nov 18 2011, 11:00 AM |

I'd rather suggest newbies going for the rooting stage to follow something easier, like from this link:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
This particular part is so easy, I don't think anyone can misinterpret it as anything other than what it is:- QUOTE edit 16Nov11 Simplified More at that link.-----------------------------------------Forget all Above and follow simple Step below------------------------------ 1. I want just Root- download This Now Execute RunMe – follow screen instruction 2. I Want ROOT + CWM I will do with PC Which kernel You have? (Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKJ4-CL641703 Here Red is kernel version) I have Kernel KJ1 - Download This – and Extract I have Kernel KJ4 - Download This - and Extract I Have Kernel KJ6 - Download this - and extract I have Kernel KK1 - Download This - and Extract NOW Ready to begin I am Already Rooted - Execute "already-rooted.bat" and follow the instructions I am Non-rooted - Execute "not-rooted-yet.bat" and follow the instructions. Personally, I was out of the Android scene for a while, so I consider myself a newbie. I've rooted my Note suing the Zergrush method detailed on that link, and then decided I want ClockWorkMod (CWM) for Nandroid backup, so I went the "Already Rooted" route. Fine and dandy so far. From a newbie's point of view, it's hard to read and understand these abbreviations (CWM?) and tech jargon like "kernels", and the reason why seasoned users look for Nandroid/ClockWorkMod Recovery options. Writeups are far and few in between, and new users are faced with the enormous task of understanding those in such short period of time, and are expected to be up to speed with it. That's where mistakes comes in. Personally, I went the documented way, and then try to understand what I did, being familiar a little bit about the scene. Imagine a real newbie from another mobile OS trying to digest all this. This post has been edited by stringfellow: Nov 18 2011, 11:10 AM |
