With the number of times these con artists change company names going to be hard to keep track. Maybe its easier to just compile a checklist of warning signs that will keep honest people from getting conned by these sleazebags.

- Small privately owned company which has an Ah Beng name like Sure Gold, Eternal Enterprises or some other tacky name that sounds like something a 6-year old came up with. Anybody with a couple of RM can register a company with the Registrar - it proves nothing.

- Focus all their sales talk on the amount of money you can earn rather than the job you are supposed to do so you dont concentrate on the flaws in their logic. Like stage magicians, they distract you with one hand while the other palms the object. This is an almost certain giveaway. If it were a real company and a real job, the employer would be more concerned about whether you were the right person to hire, rather than trying to lure you to join (because then all you are to them is a sucker).

- They ask you to pay up front for "Special training" or "Training brochures" or "Processing Fees" and the con-artist is evasive when you enquire as to what exactly you are paying for. If you were buying something, you'd like to know what it is before you buy it, right?. If they are evasive it is because they dont want you to know exactly because its all a shedload of BS.

- "Work from home" = 99% con job. I'm sure there are jobs that can be done from home, maybe telephone sales, etc. But I havent heard of a real job that you can get rich from just sitting on your butts at home. If it were so easy to make money without all the stress of travelling to work, why the hell would anybody go to work? Why don't all of us just stay at home, surf the internet and assemble fake circuit boards and get rich?

- Above all, trust your instincts. If it smells fishy and the people associated with the company don't give straight answers, it is probably all BS.

Sometimes its easy to tell by just looking at the way they advertise. I've been looking through advertistments for the past two years and been to the interviews so most of the time I can pick out the scams.
Even if you do go for interview you won't know its a scam unitl you join them.

Hi everyone...i am juz graduated with a IS diploma. Juz wan to tell all something i feel important. I join the company called Cosmopoint in KL. Maybe u know it coz it is a college. I join as the server admin job. I wan tell everyone that Cosmopoint company is a bad company. It is cheating their own employees!! Pls if u wan to join, dont join dis u will regret very much!!

When I join, they say my basic pay is RM1500. and probation 3 month. They promise after 3 month will pay me RM1650. But..i wait 3 months, nothing... until 5 months then they prepare the Confirmation Letter. I sign it...and they never increase my pay... but nvm, i still stay becoz i prefer to get experience 1st not concentrate on $$$... but it become worse.

Even if u 1 minite late in Cosmopoint, your salary will deduct!!! they have check in sistem...total your amount of time late in the month, then deduct your salary... but, they can deduct more than you earn!!...dunno how calculate... include extra penalty. this is very not fair. I complain to HR and i really wan to write to business lawyer help me...but I no experience in this and also prefer juz leave the company...

environment there is very bad. boss dun care for workers feelings at all. u work hard for nothing...all they care is how to make your full use... thats all...

BUT.... when I wan to leave, minimum is 2 months... I didn't read carefully and didn't think carefully when I sign the contract. But all employee of Cosmopoint muz give minimum 2-3 months notice before quit. I apply so many jobs...no other company wan to wait me 2 months!!! So i juz leave... is wrong but really no choice.

3 months after i juz quit...the Cosmopoint HR call me back...demand I pay them 2 month salary for COMPENSATION!!.... how can do this?? I think this a way they earn extra profit....they make environment there bad, force ppl leave coz cannot give 2-3 month notice....then later ask money back from them!!!

Y ask money from me now after 3 month?? coz they know i got better offer....wait me collect my salary to pay them....this is call scam.

I hope all malaysians will understand my situation...i am not the first... when I join Cosmo, got 2 other ppl tell me not to sign the contract...but i didnt listen to them...

I wf another company now..is ok, no deduction and not kejam like cosmo did to me.

@Azamat,

Well, it's normal that after confirmation you have to tender a 2 months notice before you can leave the company that you're working for....

By the way, since you quit just like that without tendering a 2 months resignation letter, it is their right to ask you to pay them....

and yes, it is your mistake for not reading the contract terms & conditions carefully....

anyhow, just focus on your new career now.... wish u all the best and hope you won't make the same mistake twice smile.gif

I've been there for an interview about two years ago. Around Subang area. Don't know much about them. I applied for some admin job and they wanted me to do sales. I got a feeling it would be something like a door to door salesman. When they told me I got the job, they asked me to wear formal the next day and bring a note pad with me. Thats exactly the same thing those con companies which I used to work for told me when I got the job. So yeah...beware.

Really? I almost wanted to join them. They always have this advertisment saying they're looking for IT graduates and will be paying rm1800 a month. I applied a lot of times but they never called me. Guess I was lucky then.

dear azamat.

u left cosmopoint without the 2 months notice, so it IS their right to demand compensation. u see, when they did all the wrong stuff to u, u didnt take any action against them. that's wrong. and u assume that when u leave, they wont take any action against u? now that's naive.

they are in every right to sue u now, bcoz u gave them the opportunity. it is not a scam, it's part of the legal bind between u and the company. even u take a lawyer against this case, all u can hope for is a settlement, nothing more. u can sue them about the unfulfilled promise about ur pay later.

Same thing here. I find it rather fishy. Their staring salary is way to high. With SPM only for Jobs like clerk and event helper, can get 1300++. Today went for interview, very short only, most of the questions quite weird, salary reduced to 800-1000 and they ask me to go for training tommorow. Look at my form and just repeated what is in it. They also keep stressing on formal waer. 4-5 times already they told me must wear formal wear. Their interview process also weird. First time call for interview, go all the way to fill up a form. Second time today ask few questions only. Then say got final interview and training summore. Which I suppose is tommorow.

Azamat,

You do know it is so easy to leave a company and so hard to join? If you really want to leave and dont care about using the company as a reference for future jobs (I assume not since the working environment doesnt sound too great) then all you have to do is to become a lazy employee. No one wants a lazy employee around who knows he's going to quit in 2 months time.

First thing first, hand in an formal letter of resignation. Make sure everyone in your office knows it. Come to work on time of course, but leave exactly on time too (that way, they cant take disciplinary action because you satisfied the letter of the agreement). Dont even hit one extra key more than required. Unfinished work before end time, too bad boss - its not in the contract that you have to work overtime. Find out how many days leave you are allowed and take them all. Find out how many MCs you can take without disciplinary action and take them all too.

They'll ask you to leave pretty soon with pay.

I've just finished my studies and looking into some part time job and registering myself without really remembering to which company i'm signing to...

He's talking so fast and i can barely understand him but i make as though i understand everybit what he's saying...
The interview was set up for tomorrow at 6PM..Imagine 6PM...
That's when i got this funny feeling that i've heard aboutr this company before..So i decided to check LYN and YES MY HUNCH IS RIGHT..

Media should check job advertisers' backgrounds: HR Minister

KOTA BARU: The print and Internet media should check the backgrounds of advertisers of job vacancies to stop people from being cheated, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn.

He said the media must have a sense of corporate responsibility and not "think about earning revenue from certain advertisers who may have dubious backgrounds."

Dr Fong was referring to reports of job seekers being cheated by firms offering a five-day training in foreign exchange.

The job seeker was asked to deposit funds into a forex account which eventually were siphoned out.

Dr Fong said everyone should investigate the viability of forex schemes and whether they were recognised by Bank Negara.

"This is to avoid them from been easily duped.

"If something illegal happens, newspaper and Internet media operators must also be held accountable," he told newsmen after launching a blood donation drive here.

Hi. Not sure if I post this at the correct place.

Recently go for an interview for the position of  financial planner in a company that claimed that they provide financial services. They persuaded me that I am working as if like a business owner not an employee. I thought will be able to learn about financial stuff and wealth management as a financial planner so I join in. But I feel that what they want me to do is selling their products mostly is insurance. Also seminars will be held every week, I feel as if they are going to brain wash me.

Did I think too much? Am I too suspicious? Anyone been conned with the position named financial planner?
*
I had almost become a Financial Planner under Prudential.

There were (not sure still have or not) advertisements in job portals like Jobstreet and JobsDB but I got to know about the job from my ex-colleague in IT company.

His relative is an insurance agent.

The hype was - insurance companies now rename the position of Insurance Agent as Financial Planner. The reason given was nowadays insurance companies also have investments plans. Besides, it's more 'high class' since 'Insurance Agents' have been receiving bad publicity from being too pushy in sales.

I was told there would be basic pay and I found the ads also stated there would be basic pay so I knew not only Prudential was doing that. This was about 2 years ago.

Before the interview, Branch Manager asked me lots of questions and I had to go through a personality evalutation test. The test has no right or wrong answer, it's just a method to know more about yourself.

During the 1st interview only I was told it was not basic salary when the interviewer asked me, "What do you know about this job?"

Luckily, he was honest enough to explain thoroughly about the pay scheme - it was actually a loan! If sign up under this loan scheme, I would get lower commission rate compared to those who didn't sign up for the loan scheme. Those who didn't sign up for the loan scheme would get higher commission rate but no basic pay.

I was dumbfounded.

Lower loan scheme means lower target - so it would be easier to reach the target but lower "basic pay".

I felt as if I had been mislead by the Branch Manager. She probably didn't know about the scheme thoroughly.

In the 2nd interview, I was briefed the same thing in 1st interview. Somehow I passed the interviews and was selected for the loan scheme.

As I didn't have the career I wanted then, I decided to try it out - went through the exams and some training but finally didn't register with government to be a "Financial Planner" officially.

I'm not saying being an Insurance Agent/Financial Planner is bad. There are many good IA/FP around who are honest and responsible.

If you are applying such ads/vacancies, be sure to ask about the basic pay/commission rate and comparison with other schemes. And if you plan to be in insurance, be responsible in providing accurate info to your potential customers.

Added on February 5, 2007, 3:03 pmI always search online for the company name - it helps to verify if the company is doing what it claims to be and research more about the company for interview.

Search for the contact and email too. Sometimes it's ad for company A but the email listed is like someonename@companyB.com - then check company B too.

My friend works in Recruit Express, which is a job agency. The working hour there is terrible, telling you working hour from 8:30am-5:30pm, but when you work there, you're only allowed to leave around 8:00-9:00pm. In the contract, you have to compensate 1 month salary if you resign in probation period, or they terminate you during this period. They won't let you read the contract in details, just urges you sign it faster.

I can't understand why even they terminate you, you have to compensate them. My friend only realises this after read the contract in details, when she wants to resign. I don't know this is scam or not, just want to remind all of you, please read the contract in details line by line before you sign. Please request that you can bring home and read through or ask her to leave you alone for sometime for you to read it in details. Don't be influenced by her persuade.
*
Kelly Services term if you resign within 3 months: 50% of your salary. No monthly notice is accepted.

I heard another company needs 3 months notice for a contract based job.

My friend's ex-company's termination policy was to pay back RM10K. It's outrageous!

ALWAYS ask about termination policy once you are told you are hired and yes, I agree with you on checking the offer letter. If it's not stated there, request for a change in the offer letter to state the termination policy - just in case something happens later and you don't have black & white because the staff earlier (or worse - he/she has left the company) said the termination policy was this/that.

Personally, I wouldn't agree with such terms. These companies can easily fire you but you need to give back so much if you resign. Is it worth it?
