I have a question regarding the router's compatibility. The Athena site lists several routers that are compatible with Unifi. So it means I can't just use any available router in the market? (eg. the Linksys WRT54G2 I used for my Streamyx before I upgraded to Unifi)
If I use a router that is not compatible with Unifi, I would not be able to establish a connection? What makes Unifi special that only certain routers are supported?
Simple solution, disable DHCP in your WRT54G2 and disable the firewall in it, connect any of the LAN port on your linksys to Port1~3 on UniFi router. This is the simple one. Else, flash with DDWRT but you'll lose IPTV.
Ya, you won't if it's not set up correctly. Set up here I mean is VLAN Tagging. Most basic routers doesn't offer this, or should I say their STOCK Firmware won't let the end users to do this even if the chipsets are capable of doing this. Only modified firmware(wrote to be used for unifi) on certain routers are released by TP-Link and ASUS. Else, there are some more advanced router like those Microtiks, Virgo and many unknown brands are capable of doing this using just stock firmware/OS except TP-Link W8960N, a RM120 wifi capable router that can do VLAN Tagging on stock firmware.
Vlan tag is used here, the router tag and untag all the packets passing through them in order to divide them into IPTV and internet. Internet and IPTV have different vlan tag. It's like assigning a Group name to those packets so that they know where they belong to.
