im not sure bro. what you have done.

so you re-did all the steps and completed the advance method 2?

if yes, then yeah you can read the CM9 thread and flash BUT please becareful. if you made such a mistake of flashing wrong files, your phone might possibly be a brick. please read extra extra carefully

haha its seems im using method one unintentionally..but i dont understand what it means by this "This is a kernel including ClockworkMod Recovery for use on Samsung roms.
Don't use this kernel on aosp based roms like CyanogenMod!!!"

ok im not a pro in explaining technical terms cause i myself am also learning.

but from what i think i understand.

code said that because, his CM9 already has its own kernel. so you dont need to flash this on cm9.

from there, you just download ICS 5.5.0.4. flash using odin. then follow all the steps.

we normallflash this kernel when we are on stock rom, to get root access and CWM. from there we will start flashing cm9

yeah..im try to use odin and my phone start to boot normally..argh my custom binary has 1 counts..i just realize i wrongly flash the GB kernel just now..its suppose ICS.. thats why my phone wont boot up..

then now i can flash custom rom like cm9 using cmw?
*
if u use method two and failed on method two advance, u have ady lost the CWM touch. So u won't be able to boot into CWM recovery.

flashing GB kernel into ICS will result in bootloop/brick.

OK, first of all, do not confuse between kernel, recovery, root and ROM.
in codeworkx thread, he mentioned:

QUOTE
This is a kernel including ClockworkMod Recovery for use on Samsung roms.
Don't use this kernel on aosp based roms like CyanogenMod!!!

Instructions
Power your device off
Boot into Download-Mode using Volume Down + Home + Power
Hit Volume Up to accept the warning
Start Odin
Choose "GT-I9100G_XX_ClockworkMod-Recovery_X.X.X.X.tar" as PDA (no repartition) << this is CWM ONLY
Connect your Phone
Start flashing
After reboot you can easily root your device using SuperOneClick << this is ROOT ONLY

then following that he has another instructions for kernel

QUOTE
Instructions
- git clone git://github.com:teamhacksung/GT-I9100G_ClockworkMod-Recovery.git
- modify build.sh to fit your needs
- execute it, the final zImage will be at out/ << the zImage is the file for KERNEL ONLY

similar case to method two and two advance.
in method two, u will get TEMPORARY CWM TOUCH.. once reboot then gone..
in method two advance, u will get PERMANENT CWM NON-TOUCH version

CWM is not a kernel, it's just a recovery mode.

codeworkx mentioned don't flash this on CM9, bcz CM9 is running a different kernel and will not work with this. U need to flash this BEFORE flashing CM9, so that CM9 will overwrite the existing kernels.

Fundamentals of flashing a new ROM requires ONLY CWM. Root or no root doesn't matter, cz the ROM itself will be pre-rooted if it requires root for it's custom apps. Kernels also separate one. Custom ROMs can work with stock kernels, unless they require special tweaking, then they will include their own kernels within the ROM .zip file.

hi,

i have been updating the CM9 nightly and i was on 720.
so just now i tried to do backup from CWM (version 6.0..., got it from nightly 719 i think).

somehow the backup failed and i think it kinda screwed up the internal/external SD.
now i try to reboot, it stuck at the Samsung galaxy wording thingy.. sad.gif

i had tried factory reset and cached wipe but no luck.

any idea what can i should do to revive my phone?
i wanted to reflash the latest nightly, but i think CWM can't recognize the drive or something like that as it says no file found when i chosed flash from zip... sad.gif

hurm..try to copy your cm9 zip manually into your external sd card and Flash CM9 zip from there..last time i put at internal sdcard but it cant detect the file because maybe i do the data wipe before..just like you..

Hi everyone. I haven't root my phone before and I'm trying to grasp the basics first. A few questions,

1) Any terms that I must know, such as kernel etc etc?
2) Which is the latest method to root my phone? I'm asking because I know there are many methods.

Thanks!

well you are either on gingerbread or ics rom. either way you will need to familiarize yourself with kernels and roms.

Galaxy S II I9100G

that section has everything you need to know. all the available kernels, stock roms, custom roms, themes etc.

okay. I read a few threads about the Q&A on rooting. But what exactly is ClockworkMod Recovery?
