Nikon coming out with a 70-200 f4 soon i hope >.<
Nikon recently patent for  both 70-200mm f/4 VRII & 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6
The f/4 is about time.

Quick Q

Is it still worth buying 17-55 2.8 Dx even after 7 years after its launched?
I bought lenses that were already 10 years old. Now it's already close to 15 years old.

You should just abandon the idea of getting an FX body and get whatever Nokia replaces the N8.

Ideally, no filter is best. But due to that, the front elements are the 1st contact point upon impact. So I only use UV filters on my more expensive lenses. Hoya Multi-Coated (HMC) is good enough if you're not too fussy. I use a HMC on my 24-70 as well, and as for my 85 1.4, I slap on a Marumi filter. (don't really like it though, because when there's backlight, with the filter, it gives off a hazy purple layer. So when that happens, I take off the filter and continue shooting - provided it's not dusty/moist/wet). Still looking for a 77mm Zeiss filter.

For filters, I only trust Hoya HD and B+W XS-Pro.

Well, for me Hoya HD seems to be the best buy... XS-Pro is pricey.. especially their CPL =/

Yeah actually just using it for protection, but don't want it to affect the picture quality smile.gif

It's the coating I'm after. If you learn up on the history books, it is Zeiss who invented and pioneered the multi-coating technology. It's comparable to Hoya HD and B+W, but some have said that the Zeiss T* coating is better than the Hoya HD by a tiny bit (I have no idea how they tested that), and it's smudge-resistant as well, making cleaning much easier.

p/s: and by better, I mean to the extent that you really can't see any difference with or without the filter in any type of lighting condition, behaving as though there isn't a filter in front of it.

True, Zeiss pioneered many stuffs. But if they don't continue to come out with new inventions, then the rest will overtake soon or maybe already now. Back then I really worship Zeiss lens, but after trying out a few myself found them isn't that worth 'worshiping' already. Also doubting how much 'better' or how 'good' is the Zeiss filter now.

Added on September 29, 2011, 10:31 pmSome old review, but I find them pretty good since it is all done in a well controlled environment.

Well, you get the rough idea. Not all filters nor the newer ones are in though.

Well, to each his own, with the price of the Zeiss being roughly the same as the Hoya HD and cheaper than that from B+W, I'd go for a known working technology which has been tried and tested for decades. Not to say that Hoya doesn't produce good filters. Just it's a matter of preference.
